The SBID UK Interior Design Icons were selected to recognise leading design practices throughout the UK who have consistently displayed exceptional standards within our esteemed industry network.
This week’s instalment of the SBID Icon Insights series features Diane Berry Kitchens. They create kitchen designs where style meets function and culinary aspirations come to life.
We are always researching online, we visit trade shows in Milan and Germany, we visit all our suppliers in Germany and research all the time, we watch the SBID awards entries and spend time looking and learning in cities and towns as we all travel. I've seen amazing ideas on cruise ships and hotels, Vegas was an eye opener and it carries on like that. I find myself watching TV and studying the sets too. If you love design, you never stop seeing ideas and thinking where and when can I use that. My team and I weekly share images we find and challenge each other to find a client that will love it.
I think wellbeing is key, rather than a style or colour trend. Covid made us all realise how important our homes are and being locked in them for months on end made us really focus on the bits we hated and loved. Decluttering and organisation is a key part of a calm home and then easy to clean and maintain too. Pay a little more and make it last is a motto I have lived by, this in return is sustainable. Avoid buy cheap buy twice mentality and this will be such a great thing for us to do for our world.
Technology had a huge impact on how we present out work but we are still a very touchy feely company as we love our stunning award winning studio as people do buy what they see. Long may this continue as meeting people in the studio helps us read them and their needs, keeping us presenting what is truly best for them.
Make sure you truly care about people, this job is 25% design and 75% business. So many people talk about the fun part of the materials and textures and rarely talk about the detail and work that goes into the detail. I know so much about plumbing, electrics, lighting, ventilation, damp courses, pad stones etc. I know this is design but the part people think about is putting that paper with that paint, a nice natural wood floor and a cute handle. Honestly this part is so small once the design bit is done it needs sourcing and costing accurately! So be ready for maths and lonely computer work, late nights and weekends too. If a builder needs electrical drawings on Monday it won’t wait! And this goes on all the time.
Opening our flagship studio. We bought the derelict building when it was full of asbestos and pigeons and now we have an iconic building presenting seven huge room sets with all appliances working. We are able to host cookery events for all our brands and have a happy environment for our team to work in.
We love working with architects, builders and designers, they love our studio. We also work closely with lots of interior specialist like fireplaces designers, blinds and curtain specialist etc. We know what we are good at and respect others are better at their area of expertise than us, so we have lots of people we work closely with especially lighting design as this is a constantly moving technology.
We work with two kitchen furniture brands: Eggersmann and Rempp, then appliance brands: Miele, Siemens, Neff, Bora and Fisher and Paykel, Quooker for their amazing taps and too many to mention worktop brands. We love Arte wall coverings and have a list of lighting and flooring brands. Our trade is very much about brand loyalty as we need to know what we sell inside and out and be able to guide our clients to what meets their needs on technology and function as well as budgeting.

This week’s instalment of the SBID Icon Insights series features Cox Jones Interiors. With offices in Birmingham, London, and Manchester, the practice serves a diverse range of clients both nationwide and internationally.
Our design directors, Sam and Ben, bring a deep passion for creativity and design excellence to every project. They work closely alongside our talented team of lead designers, architects, and assistants to ensure a collaborative and seamless approach to every design project. Each team member plays a vital role in the creative process, with contributions that extend from the very first client meeting through to the final handover of the completed projects. This hands-on involvement ensures that every detail is meticulously considered and that our designs are not only visually striking but also functionally aligned with our client's needs and aspirations. Through this close-knit teamwork, we bring our collective vision to life, ensuring a high level of quality and attention to detail at every stage of the design journey.
We are dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of quality, perfecting every step of our process. Most of our furniture is custom made by our skilled artisans and designed in-house by our creative team, where we constantly push the boundaries of innovation. We believe in continuous evolution, learning and adapting with every completed project. To stay inspired and ahead of trends, we invest in our growth by attending international trade events regularly, incorporating fresh collections and trends into our designs. These experiences allow us to discover new collections, trends, and innovations, ensuring we remain ahead of the curve in design and craftsmanship.
Interior design is often an evolving process, and we remain flexible and adaptable throughout. Our lead designers are dedicated to keeping clients informed, especially when they request changes to the design. Any modifications are promptly communicated to the entire team, ensuring that adjustments are made smoothly and efficiently, keeping the project on track and true to the client’s vision.
We are committed to growing as an eco-conscious design studio, increasingly incorporating natural elements like real stone and natural wood into our projects. This approach not only enhances the beauty of spaces but also promotes sustainability by integrating nature into interiors. We prioritise natural light wherever possible in our projects and use organic materials that support overall well-being. We also focus on energy efficiency to help reduce energy consumption across our designs. As technology continues to advance, smart home automation such as lighting, security systems, and motorised window treatments has become more seamless and intuitive. As designers, we now integrate these technologies into our projects as a standard feature. We place greater emphasis on health and well-being in our designs, ensuring that the furniture we create is not only aesthetically pleasing but also ergonomic. This focus extends beyond individual pieces, influencing the layout of furniture and the overall design of spaces to strengthen comfort and support healthier living environments.
Our company is dedicated to making choices that focus on the environment, and we actively seek out ways to incorporate sustainable practices into our work. This includes using natural fabrics and recycled materials, as well as opting for non-toxic paints that are not only better for the environment but also improve indoor air quality. We integrate smart home lighting systems with motion sensors to minimise energy consumption when rooms are unoccupied, and carefully select energy-efficient appliances to reduce overall power usage. In our outdoor projects such as swimming pool designs, we encourage our clients to opt for heat pumps which save up to 80% energy consumption.
Our approach also extends to furniture selection, choosing pieces that are built to last, so that quality furniture can be repaired and restored rather than to replace. These are just a few examples of the thoughtful, eco-conscious choices we integrate into our designs, helping to create spaces that are not only beautiful but also sustainable and mindful of their impact on our planet.
We create designs that are uniquely tailored to our client's lifestyles and personalities, ensuring each space reflects their individual needs and tastes. We take pleasure in blending classical elements with modern sensibilities, resulting in interiors that are both timeless and enduring. Our designs often feature classic furniture with a contemporary twist, striking a perfect balance between tradition and innovation, allowing the spaces we create to stand the test of time.
Becoming an interior designer is a fulfilling journey that combines creativity with practical expertise. We highly recommend pursuing a degree in interior design to learn the foundational design principles, along with knowledge of software like SketchUp and AutoCAD. Developing strong client communication skills, and understanding contracts and budgets, will also greatly benefit you in the long run. Gaining hands-on experience through work placements is invaluable, as it allows you to learn from real life projects. Above all, your unique design voice is what will set you apart. Don’t be afraid to experiment and push creative boundaries, but always stay true to your personal vision and style.
We’ve been fortunate to have received recognition from leading industry awards/bodies, and our client list reflects a diverse range of celebrities, including Grammy award-winning artists, well-known business professionals, and professional footballers. One of our proudest achievements was designing England and Manchester City footballer Phil Foden’s first property in 2021. This year, in 2025, we were honoured to be commissioned once again to design his second property. While these milestones are incredibly rewarding, nothing compares to the satisfaction of receiving our client's feedback after they’ve settled into their new homes. Their joy and appreciation are truly the greatest rewards for us.

This week’s instalment of the SBID Icon Insights series features Shalini Misra. The design studio, with offices in London, Milan, New York, Delhi and Dubai, is dedicated to creating elegant, timeless and finely crafted interiors.
The practice has a culture of research and inspiration sharing and an ‘always learning’ approach to new technology and the ever evolving industry as a whole. The studio has CPDs and attends trade shows, art and industry fairs. Suppliers visit regularly to present their latest collections. The team visits suppliers’ showrooms and workshops and enjoys learning about the techniques and methods used by diverse makers and businesses. SMD’s brand pillars involve innovating and not repeating. Shalini often speaks at panels and events, and enjoys information and education sharing both in terms of sharing with others and hearing from industry peers.
In every project a client’s collection of furniture is reviewed first to see what can still be used, relocated, repurposed or reimagine. Clients are encouraged to consider the lifecycle of their objects and supported in understanding how existing pieces can work in the context of a new space.
Sustainability through longevity of design is a focus for the practice. This means buying well with a focus on quality, purchasing things that will last a lifetime and beyond.
Focusing on the footprint of an object is a core studio value, so local production is important. Alternative materials are always considered, and the studio is currently building its knowledge base in this area with research into materials such as banana leaf, aloe vera and agave as well as the impact of overall supply chains.
Every project is unique, however layering of textures and use of many finishes throughout characterises a lot of the studio’s work - playing with surface finishes on walls, floors, joinery and addressing the ceiling in unusual ways.
Art and design curation is something that runs through many of SMD’s projects and client briefs.
Learning is never finished, and inspiration is everywhere. However far you progress and however many years you have behind you, always look at the world through fresh eyes.
Remaining open to new ideas, technologies, techniques and processes is one of the most important things a designer can do as they progress.
Design for feeling as well as style, trust your instinct and listen to your client.
A strong emphasis on art and a razor-sharp understanding of how it transforms a space. An understanding of the wide spectrum of health and wellness and its relationship to interior spaces, and an unwavering dedication to exceptional craftsmanship.
The Farmhouse in Delhi epitomises what the studio stands for. The design in its entirety - interior, architecture and landscape architecture all being designed around core principles that sum up the working philosophies the practice is built on.
The farmhouse was intentionally built in the vernacular of the region, so had many suppliers and craftspeople working on building furniture and specialist finishes.
Its focus on reviving heritage crafts meant extra support in bringing artisanal skills back to the surface, which meant intricate management yet ultimately is what makes this project so special.
To offer this support an on-site ‘crafts village’ was created, meaning many artisans in one place. Lots of extra project management and coordination of all the different trades.
The practice works with certain brands, galleries, craftspeople and makers regularly.
Several collaborations and collections are in progress in 2025 and the studio released a collection with CC Tapis last year.
Sister company, Curio, is an excellent resource of distinct suppliers. The team at Curio conducts global research to uncover and support makers and brands whose work is standout.
About Shalini Misra
Shalini Misra, an internationally celebrated interior architect, designer and property developer, has shaped exceptional spaces for over two decades. Often collaborating with artists and galleries to curate bespoke collections, in 2022 Shalini launched Curio, the global platform for extraordinary art, craft and design. In 2024, she announced the inaugural Shakti Design Residency, a first-of-its-kind initiative that builds bridges between Indian artisanship and the global design world. Shalini earned her architecture degree from the Delhi School of Architecture and Planning in India and further honed her expertise in Urban Planning at the University of Columbia in New York. Her enthusiasm for new technology led her to explore Virtual Reality in Architecture at the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, London. The recipient of numerous awards and accolades, Shalini is an active contributor to her field. She serves on the advisory board at KLC School of Design and plays an integral role on Tate’s South Asian Acquisition Committee. Committed to philanthropy, Shalini is a trustee and mentor for the Vahani Scholarship Trust.
This week’s instalment of the SBID Icon Insights series features Catalyst Interiors. Catalyst Interiors is the UK’s leading design and fit-out company in the healthcare sector, with 25 years’ experience of transforming healthcare environments.
At Catalyst Interiors, we stay at the forefront of the Healthcare Design industry by continually embracing innovation and staying closely attuned to the evolving needs of the care sector. We invest in research and development to explore the latest trends in experiential design, sensory technologies, and well-being-focused interior design.
Our team regularly attends industry seminars, conferences, and workshops to keep up with new methods, materials, and practices. Additionally, we collaborate with experts in neuroscience, psychology, and dementia care to ensure that our designs are informed by evidence-based research and always prioritise the emotional and sensory experiences of residents.
By consistently expanding our knowledge and expertise, we remain dedicated to pushing the boundaries of holistic design in care homes. Staying ahead in the dynamic world of healthcare interior design is a commitment we take very seriously. Engaging in industry events, conferences, and workshops to absorb emerging trends and insights, ensures that our work remains at the cutting edge of both innovation and design.
We also collaborate with academic institutions and thought leaders, which enables us to integrate the latest technological advancements and design methodologies into our projects.
We also invest in the ongoing professional development of our team, fostering an environment that encourages creativity, critical thinking, and a willingness to challenge the status quo. This proactive approach allows us to deliver spaces that are not only aesthetically exceptional but also meet the highest standards of functionality, sustainability, and technical precision.
At Catalyst Interiors, we are always looking ahead at the trends shaping the future of interior design, particularly within the healthcare sector. While eco-design in interiors has been widely embraced in other industries, it is still catching up in healthcare, though we are seeing a growing shift towards more sustainable solutions. Similarly, the evolution of safety technology is becoming more prevalent, and integrating these advancements into our designs in a seamless, non-invasive way is a challenge we are actively working to overcome. Another key focus for us is experiential interior design, a technique we fully embrace and continuously push further. Scientific research has shown that our surroundings can trigger emotional responses, and by understanding these psychological effects, we can design spaces that create a more meaningful experience for the end-user. This is particularly vital in care environments, where residents may be at the most vulnerable times in their lives. Our goal is always to design with empathy, ensuring that every space we create not only meets practical needs but also provides comfort, reassurance, and a true sense of home.
Catalyst Interiors Limited is a Carbon Neutral Company. Sustainability is a cornerstone of our design ethos. We integrate environmentally friendly practices into every phase of our projects, ensuring that each space is not only beautiful but also responsibly crafted.
Within dementia communities, we place meaningful but decorative items such as retro food signs, as well as 'rummage items' for example old car signs, hats/scarves/bags or music records that are used to provoke memories and meaningful conversation with residents who have cognitive impairments. These items are all sourced by our team from local charity shops to ensure they are relevant to the demographic and authentic to the era. For specific items that cannot be found in local shops, we also use re-sell websites such as Ebay and Vinted.
We also prioritise natural light and ventilation to enhance energy efficiency and create healthier environments for residents.
We also work alongside other professionals on projects to maximise sustainable building practices and continually learn and refine our approach. For example, together with architects and engineers we will design in facilities to create bottled sparkling and still water for residents, visitors and team members. Then within each communal space we ensured glass fronted fridges were designed into coffee bars or serveries to promote the use of these reusable bottles.
Our commitment to sustainability extends beyond reducing environmental impact—it’s about creating spaces that support long-term well-being and resilience for the communities we serve.
At Catalyst Interiors, technology and innovation are integral to every stage of our design process. With our in-house CGI & 3D Visualisation team, using cutting edge technology to bring our projects to life with precision and clarity. This digital approach not only enhances our technical accuracy but also streamlines collaboration with clients and stakeholders, ensuring everyone shares a clear vision of the final outcome.
During the Furniture & Electrical Layout stage of the design, our interior designers meticulously plan and incorporate any necessary electrical outlets for safety technology within care homes. By carefully addressing and integrating these essential elements into the design right from the outset in a way that remains both non-invasive and visually appealing, ensuring seamless functionality without compromising the homely aesthetic.
Over the past 25 years, we have been recognised as innovators in the industry, setting standards that others follow. By incorporating spaces such as ‘Technology Hubs’ and ‘Media Suites’ into care homes, we are ensuring residents have the opportunity to integrate technology into their daily lives if they chose to do so. Ultimately, by continuing to push boundaries, we are delivering environments that truly enhance the quality of life for residents.
At Catalyst Interiors, we stand apart in the healthcare design industry by embracing a broader approach to interior design—one that goes beyond simply creating visually pleasing spaces. We are not confined by the traditional design conventions that are often associated with care homes, based on assumptions about age. Instead, we are passionate about pushing the boundaries to design braver and bolder environments that retain familiar, comforting elements while challenging the notion that care home interiors should be dictated by someone's age.
Our goal is to create spaces that stimulate the senses, encourage interaction, and promote socialisation across a range of ages. We design interiors that everyone wants to visit, and more importantly, that residents will be excited to move in to.
Over the past 25 years, our forward-thinking approach has set industry benchmarks, establishing us as recognised innovators whose designs inspire and lead the way. By continually redefining the care home experience, Catalyst Interiors is leading the way in creating functional and engaging spaces that evoke feelings of comfort, safety, and belonging, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for all who experience them.
At Catalyst Interiors, when expanding our team, we intentionally hire recent graduate junior designers who can grow within our company by shadowing experienced designers and assisting on projects. Through this mentorship-driven approach, we ensure that each junior designer gains industry hands-on experience, and develops the skills and confidence needed to take on their own projects. This process allows us to instil our passion and commitment to enhancing the lives of our older generation from the very beginning of their careers. By nurturing talent in-house, we create a team that not only understands the technical and creative aspects of healthcare design but also shares our deep-rooted belief in designing spaces that improve well-being, comfort, and quality of life for residents.
We take great pride in sharing our expertise and mentoring the next generation of interior design professionals. We actively mentor emerging talent through educational workshops, and guest lectures, maintaining close relationships with academic institutions. In addition to these initiatives, we regularly deliver a one-day CPD accredited workshop on Interior Design for the Elderly, covering specialist design requirements for general ageing as well as for those living with dementia. This commitment to education ensures that our industry not only evolves but continues to uphold the high standards we have set over the past 25 years.
At Catalyst Interiors we firmly believe that collaboration is key to creating exceptional spaces. We work closely with architects, engineers, and other design professionals to ensure that every aspect of a project comes together seamlessly. No project would be possible without a unified team, all working towards a shared goal of creating functional, beautiful, and user-focused spaces. We take the initial architectural plans and engage in open discussions with the architects on how we may refine them to better suit the needs of the end user, ensuring that the interior design enhances the space rather than simply fitting within it. This process also involves input from engineers and the build team, allowing us to develop solutions that are not only aesthetically and functionally appropriate, but also practical in terms of construction, budget, and environmental impact.
We believe that there is something to learn on every project, and that learning extends beyond interior design—gaining insight from architects, builders, and engineers helps us continuously refine our approach and push the boundaries of what is possible in care home design. This collaborative ethos not only enriches our design process but also enables us to exceed industry standards and consistently create spaces that enhance the well-being of residents.

We work internationally, bringing together diverse cultures and professional expertise. Our philosophy is built on the accumulation of knowledge, allowing us to take a staged approach to each project. For us, design is about embracing the next challenge—every project is unique, and we continuously seek new opportunities to push boundaries.
Rather than focusing on individuals, we believe in the power of teamwork, this contributes to shaping our creative vision. Our projects reflect this collective effort, ensuring that every design outcome is a true representation of the team’s combined expertise. As Creative Director, Neil Hogan plays a key role in guiding and supporting, helping to nurture ideas and elevate creative solutions.

Whether it's shaping the identity of a building, enhancing how people live, or transforming the way they experience a space, our collaborative approach ensures that every project tells a compelling and meaningful story.
We are committed to leading rather than following in an ever-evolving design landscape. As technology continues to advance and shape the creative process, we embrace innovation by integrating tools and methodologies into our work. Our team continuously explores new techniques, materials, and digital advancements to push the boundaries of design.
We work across a variety of sectors, each with its own norms. Rather than following ephemeral trends, we focus on creating lasting, impactful designs. While innovation is central to our approach, its application is often guided by budget considerations.
We are respected across all stages of our work because of our professionalism, trust and friendliness. We prioritise delivering on our promises rather than overpromising and under delivering. About SHH Architecture & Interiors
SHH is an award-winning interior design & architecture studio renowned for creating remarkable spaces for remarkable people. The studio’s portfolio stands at the forefront of luxury design featuring super-prime residential & hospitality projects that serve our discerning clientele.
This week’s instalment of the SBID Icon Insights series features Bernard Interiors. Founded in 2008 by Jen Bernard, Bernard Interiors is a highly successful, award-winning practice with a long-standing track record of designing prime residential and commercial projects ranging from £2M – £120M throughout the UK and abroad.
Travel allows me to stay at the forefront of design by exposing me to diverse cultures, trends, and innovative ideas from around the world. Each new destination offers fresh inspiration, whether it's through architecture, art, or local craftsmanship, keeping my design perspective dynamic and forward-thinking. The global experiences I gather help me incorporate unique elements into our work, ensuring it remains relevant and cutting-edge.
I see several key trends shaping the future of interior design. First, there's a strong focus on creating "happy interiors," spaces that promote positivity and well-being. This ties into the growing emphasis on at-home wellness, where design is used to enhance mental and physical health. Additionally, wellness is making its way into the business world, with companies prioritising environments that support employee well-being. Lastly, I believe there’s a return to classic, timeless design—moving away from fleeting trends and investing in enduring aesthetics that never go out of style.
My signature style is rooted in timeless and classic design, creating spaces that feel both enduring and elegant. I love layering rich textiles - such as luxurious fabrics and textured materials - to add depth and warmth. Standout art pieces are key in my approach, serving as focal points that tell a story and evoke emotion. I also incorporate antiques with superior craftsmanship, blending history with modern sensibilities to create unique, well-curated environments. The result is a harmonious balance of sophistication, comfort, and personality that transcends trends.
Technology in the Care sector is increasingly influencing the way we approach design within our Commercial projects. To support an ageing population, we must stay at the forefront of innovation, incorporating smart technologies and accessible design solutions. This means creating spaces that aid independence, such as incorporating adaptive layouts, assistive devices, and user-friendly technologies. By considering the needs of both residents and operators, we can design environments that not only enhance quality of life but also make it easier for care providers to deliver the best support possible.
What sets us apart is our unwavering attention to detail and our ability to inject warmth into every project. We take a holistic approach, considering every aspect of a space to ensure it feels cohesive and purposeful. Our passion for design is evident in everything we do - we genuinely care about the outcome, and it matters to us that our work not only meets but exceeds expectations. It’s this dedication and personal investment that make our projects truly stand out.
Project management is what sets us apart, a skill I proudly honed from my late father. While we are a highly creative team, our complementary business and operational skills ensure robust procedures that, according to third parties, make us a dream to work with. The process is seamless, with egos parked at the door and a focus on open communication, collaboration, and accountability - key attributes that drive our success.
We pride ourselves on translating our clients’ visions into reality with precision and expertise. Our project management team oversees every stage of the design and build process adhering to the RIBA stages, from assessing development potential to concept refinement, and from architectural planning to securing approvals.
Whether collaborating with an existing team or managing the entire process in-house, we ensure a seamless journey from concept to completion. With a keen eye for detail and a commitment to excellence, our approach guarantees that every project is executed on time, within budget, and to the highest standards.
I believe in investing in long-term relationships with both suppliers and clients, and I’m proud to still work with many I first engaged with over 16 years ago. People and relationships are at the core of what I do, built on trust, loyalty, and a commitment to best practices. These enduring partnerships create a strong foundation for mutual success and continuous growth.
For example, recent collaborations include Julian Chichester X Bernard London – The Monterey Collection – a capsule collection launching in March at London Design Week and in April at High Point Market.
“This collection provides a unique opportunity to deliver a collection that combines heritage with innovation – exquisite pieces that are not only visually stunning but also functional and worthy of a Global stage.”

This week’s instalment of the SBID Icon Insights series features THDP. Created by architect Manuela Mannino and interior designer Nicholas J. Hickson, the studio is renowned for its adaptability and innovation, responding dynamically to the ever-evolving hospitality sector.
Curiosity and adaptability. We are constantly researching, experimenting, and collaborating with artisans, suppliers, and brands to inform and improve our designs and interiors. Attending global design fairs, embracing new materials, technologies, and listening to both clients and guests allow us to stay ahead in an ever-evolving industry.
While we stay informed about trends, I wouldn't say we blindly follow them. What we do instead is analysing their longevity and adaptability, incorporating elements that align with our design ethos. Over the past two decades, we’ve seen shifts from minimalism to maximalism, then the rise of biophilic design, for example. The key for us is balancing contemporary influences with timeless elegance.
We have published a manifesto and a new updated manifesto is about to come! It will reflect our commitment to creating responsible designs that respect the environment while maintaining luxury and comfort. Sustainability is embedded in our design process, from material selection to energy efficiency. We prioritise locally sourced materials, recycled and upcycled elements, and work with manufacturers who adhere to sustainable practices... it's not easy but it's our duty and responsibility in the industry.
Rather than adhering to a fixed style, we embrace a distinctive approach—one that seamlessly blends functionality with immersive, holistic experiences. Our designs are characterised by a warm, layered aesthetic, rich tactile materials, and a deep connection to the cultural and historical essence of each location. Every space is unique, yet a refined and thoughtful sensibility runs through all our work, creating an authentic and meaningful design narrative.
Technology is integral to both the design process and the final guest experience. Design is about crafting with the most effective tools available, and we embrace innovations that enhance efficiency and unlock creativity. By leveraging technology, we can focus on what truly matters—creating exceptional interiors that elevate the guest experience.
Stay curious, remain adaptable, and never stop learning. Travel, observe, and immerse yourself in diverse cultures—hospitality design is about crafting experiences. Foster strong relationships with suppliers and craftsmen, as collaboration is essential. Most importantly, discover your unique voice and design with passion and authenticity.
It’s hard to choose just one, but being entrusted with projects for globally recognised brands and seeing our designs come to life in iconic locations is incredibly fulfilling. While winning industry awards and being featured in prestigious publications are significant milestones, the true reward comes from the positive feedback of guests who experience and connect with our spaces.
About THDP
THDP has been shaping the hospitality design landscape for 20 years, since its founding in 2005. Created by architect Manuela Mannino and interior designer Nicholas J. Hickson, the studio is renowned for its adaptability and innovation, responding dynamically to the ever-evolving hospitality sector. For THDP, creativity knows no boundaries. “We are not just designers, architects, or concept creators,” they explain. “We are storytellers, crafting immersive experiences that bring unique environments to life. Our approach is driven by curiosity and a deep understanding of spatial storytelling, ensuring that each project is distinctive and memorable.”
This week’s instalment of the SBID Icon Insights series features Alex Kravetz Design. AKD is an award-winning boutique interior design & architecture studio, specialising in luxury interiors for hospitality projects, high-end residences, and private jets around the world.
We try not to have a house style which effectively means every project resembles the other. Having trained as a stage designer initially I have learned that variety of styles makes you more creative and you also never get bored with repetition. It also allows us to work on very diverse projects. What perhaps unites them is the dedication to styling factors in our design philosophy. And every project is another milestone.
We have the same principle of collaboration that is a very united team working together. What changes is the way we interact and brainstorm – as we move towards virtual design platforms where everything is immediate and three-dimensional collaboration becomes even more important, especially at the beginning of the project. Our collaboration often involves testing of the new standards for documentation as well and we try to immediately implement it in the workflow – this makes it very hands on as well as creative. Creativity without pragmatism and buildability will always remain just on paper.
I believe the future is in the combination of technology and experience. Also, multicultural fluency will be paramount as the means of interaction with our clients is rapidly changing. It is not unusual for us to collaborate with our clients on different continents in totally digital format which makes our work so much more than just design behind the desk. This also extends to site supervision and collaboration with the artisans and manufacturers around the world.
Our sustainability approach is fairly simple – design for long term and stay away from “fast fashion interiors”, use natural materials and stay local if possible. Support smaller companies and work with them to produce unique elements in your designs – this takes sustainability to a more humanistic level which I value greatly.
I would describe our signature style as “Wellness in living environments”. Perfect harmony, precise symmetry and ergonomic and logical space planning coupled with abundance of daylight. Artificial lighting highlighting the key forms and emphasising the most important aspects of the interiors is also extremely important.
Stay focused, stay informed and travel non-stop. Every trip you take should be an exploration of all the amazing architecture and interiors created around the world. Trendy places are important, but the foundations of design are timeless and will teach you more than you can imagine.
It is very important that we do. Ultimately without the artisans, manufacturers and suppliers no interiors can come to life. We tend to take this very seriously and rely hugely on each other’s expertise and support. These partnerships are also very long standing and have been tested by many challenges we have faced on the projects be they budget or time related. What counts is perfection and quality of the final product as well as consistency from project to project.

This week’s instalment of the SBID Icon Insights series features These White Walls. From concept through to completion, the studio seamlessly blends bold elegance with uncompromising functionality, and a meticulous eye for detail. Their interiors become more than spaces to be lived in, they are a testament to the art of living beautifully.
HIDE restaurant in Mayfair, London was the studio’s first project and it best captures and defines our essence. The project has a bold femininity and organic fluidity running through the design. There is a distinct spatial narrative defined by the building’s relationship to its locality. Everything is made bespoke and the level of craft is exceptional—from the finishes on the wall to the trolleys that move across the floors, we were meticulous on every detail. We created site-specific art installations throughout, and there are a multitude of hidden details that keep delighting guests and bringing them back—she really is our signature space.
Collaboration is fundamental to our approach; we understand that an aesthetic vision needs to be anchored in technical knowhow, and we value the expertise of a diverse range of shareholders on every single project who are essential to its success.
We believe in creating a collaborative environment where partners feel empowered to contribute their unique expertise and work closely with the project managers to ensure workshops are facilitated both on site and remotely, to ensure that communication remains fluid and all parties fully informed. As an interior designer, you are often the connective tissue that binds multiple parts together on a big project.
Creative collaborations are also key to our studio’s approach. We work closely with craftspeople, specialist finishers, makers, and with individual artists on all of our schemes to bring distinction to the interiors. Art is fundamental to our practice: we connect artists with the architecture of our spaces to create site specific commissions that are unique to the space. From bespoke botanical plaster murals to hand painted silk roomscapes, to funghi walls, and more recently working on a data-driven articulated sculpture, artistic collaborations are a key component in our work.
For us this begins by constantly challenging conventional thinking. Internally, I always encourage a culture of exploration and experimentation and am continually asking the team to question why they are making specific choices. For our conceptual ideation, we always reference realms outside of design because that brings a fresh energy to the work we create and we bring in-studio education to the team through our Talk Thursdays programme that introduces alternative approaches.
We do of course actively engage with the design industry through the industry events and biennales, some of which we will be collaborating on next year. Also, given my social sciences background, I am equally interested to attend events that speak to more diverse interests. For example, new technologies or developments in the world of well-being that will eventually impact our industry, and this cross-pollination of ideas helps to encourage innovating thinking in the studio.
This is a really tough one for us as we work globally, so the very process of producing and being present across global sites is by definition unsustainable, but we actively take steps to make the process more sustainable from each location. We are very conscious of sourcing materials locally where possible, and to find local craftspeople for the construction of key elements in the scheme to lower the carbon footprint of their production.
We also prioritise the creation of unique, high-quality, durable products that are designed for longevity and timeless appeal, to be treated as future heirlooms, rather than those with a built-in obsolescence. We have learned that creating designs that endure can be a more sustainable strategy than focusing on a lot of recycled or energy-consuming methods; there is a balance to be had.
We are continuing to look at our sustainability practices, and this year hope to do a carbon-footprint audit on our projects to see if we can become more conscious of that imprint and where it is most significant so we can then work together with our clients to provide solutions that will reduce it every time.
Always follow the map unfolding within you. Don’t be swayed by the ‘shoulds’ and conventions that get in the way of what continually ignites your passion and makes you feel alive when you create. I took an unconventional path to get here, studying Anthropology rather than design at UCL before forging an unplanned multidisciplinary career working across editorials, television and immersive live events, before I eventually decided to deepen into interior design. I thought at the time that my idiosyncratic story would hold me back when in fact I now recognise it as the reason our studio is so distinctive. I would encourage all emerging designers to follow their curiosity and see where it takes them.
We are committed to designing spaces that transcend trends, so our work is sometimes difficult to define. There is a bold feminine beauty that runs through all of our designs, grounded by a rational masculinity that creates a beautiful tension and lends our work a timeless quality that has an enduring integrity. There is something profoundly personal about our work and that seems to make it very memorable.
Very much so — the studio has supported United in Design since its inception, providing 1:1 mentoring and several extended placements to young women coming through the Career Pathway programme. We are also proud to say that we are the first studio to have offered a full-time job to one of the graduates of the scheme, and Jo is still part of the team today.
We are also proud to be supporting the international charity, Empowering Young Women, to help improve the sanitation spaces at schools located in underdeveloped areas of rural Kenya. Currently, we are redesigning a sanitation project for a boys school outside of Nairobi and are leading workshops to help educate the students on how design can positively impact their everyday lives.
