The SBID is pleased to announce that it has appointed Chris Godfrey, global principal of HBA Residential, as the new acting President of SBID to represent the British interior design body, and promote the professional practice of interior design throughout the UK and around the world.

Chris Godfrey will take the mantle of SBID Presidency from Tom Marquardt, president and founder of Marquardt+ and former vice president of HOK global interiors, who held the position for 2019 and will continue to support the growth of SBID as immediate past president. After receiving the Master of Design award at the SBID International Design Awards 2019 for significant contributions to the global interior design industry, Chris has the recognition, innovation and expertise to undertake the position as SBID President from 2nd November 2020, for the upcoming 12-month term.

Sharing his aspirations for the new position, Chris Godfrey, global principal, HBA Residential, said: ‘It is my great honour to be appointed as the President of SBID and to represent the interior design body and its membership on the global stage. I am inspired to take up the role during this particular period of time; where change is a constant, connectivity a challenge; and where proaction and vision are paramount. Throughout my career, and particularly in my role with HBA Residential, I have benefitted from working internationally and, as a result, have developed an open and global outlook.”

He added: “In this new SBID role, I want to use my experiences and lessons learnt working in both the Far East and the West and leverage off a developed network to help improve connectivity; expand awareness; and promote inclusive, cross-border engagement. With new global dynamics comes lots of new opportunities and growth potential. Through my endeavors, I would also hope to help inspire the next generation of interior designers who, despite the short-term challenges and uncertainty faced, will continue to take the industry further and wider.”

Diversity in the Built Environment

Whether you directly work in, are involved in, or simply interested in the built environment, whether it be through interior design, architecture, engineering or the wider construction industry, we all have a responsibility to make sure the profession is more diverse, inclusive, and representative of the societies and communities this line of work functions within.

The BDP Birmingham studio’s Kieren Majhail hosted a cross institute event to discuss diversity in the built environment with other hosts including Pinsent Masons, Birmingham Architectural Association, and Women in Property.  The subject is particularly topical as recently published gender pay gap figures suggest the construction industry needs to significantly improve in recruiting and retaining women, particularly at senior level, and that racial equality is potentially an even more prominent issue. A panel of guest speakers were brought together to discuss these issues and look at ways of improving diversity across the industry as a whole.

This month will see the ninth edition of Clerkenwell Design Week (CDW), one of the UK’s leading design events, take place from May 22-24th 2018 in EC1; the heart and home of design. As the annual focus for London’s leading design district, the festival programme has been created to reflect the unique nature of this vibrant London hub which is home to a plethora of creative businesses, design consultancies, showrooms and architectural practices. 2018 will again play host to hundreds of design events including design-led fringe events, a programme of showroom presentations, product launches, workshops, talks and public-facing installations. Activities will run over three days and follow a distinct trail from North to South, beginning at Spa Fields and stretching down to Farringdon.

Conversations at Clerkenwell

In partnership with Mapei UK, Conversations at Clerkenwell has become an integral arena to introduce and discuss new products, raise industry issues and network with fellow A&D professionals. Our SBID Colour Council Co-chair, Carolina Calzada Oliveira, will be among the high-calibre of speakers exploring current industry topics on 24th May 2018. She will be leading the conversation in a colour trends session about the influence of colour in different spaces and the practicalities of the colour blue through applied colour psychology, with a focus on interior designers and commercial projects.

Maison Images D’epinal and six other creative french workshops open a new showroom. On May 24, a new exhibition space dedicated to interior decorators and architects will open in the Marais in the former space of the renowned Zürcher contemporary art gallery. Seven French creative houses are joining forces to showcase their complementary savoir-faire and French craft excellence at the service of interior decorators and architects. Called the MANUFACTURE GALLERY PARIS and distributed throughout various different rooms, the showrooms offer visitors the opportunity to discover beautiful creations, tailor-made furniture, upholstery, table art, layout and decoration for hotels, palaces and private residences.

Interior design event CPD for designers continual professional development

John Lewis CPD – Talk and Tour

Interested in textiles and prints? If so, you can join this CPD talk and guided tour on the origin and history of the Textile Design Archive held by the John Lewis Partnership in their Heritage Centre based in Maidenhead. Starting at 11am, this talk focuses on historic textile printing techniques, the work of reputable designers and how they have inspired more contemporary designs and products. This is followed by a Q&A session with a John Lewis Partnership Archivist, then a guided tour of the Heritage Centre including the textile gallery, where the original artworks for many designs from c1800 onwards are displayed. Educate yourselves on the designs from the past, to give you inspirations for the future.

World Leaders on policy change and decision making for climate control have gathered at Copenhagen for the beginning of climate change discussion and negotiation. Is this a serious intention to change omissions or is it a political step for a networking opportunity, is it a case of be there or be shamed? … and once there, what will really happen, will there be a lot of back slapping or is it simply lip service?

£6Billion is currently spent per annum in UK on household ‘green goods’ which compares to an overall British wealth of £9 trillion. Last week I had lunch with the Chairman of the government energy body for Britain, he explained in depth the percentage of rate savings within buildings ratios and the focus by government on saving 50% of current outputs by 2016 alongside techniques to achieve it. I have to say I was surprised. Further info will be on the website when released. UK also has a carbon omission law coming into force in April 2010 which will affect all commercial buildings, the law will require all buildings to reduce their carbon output and in doing so a substantial sum of money will be spent by tenants and landlords alike to achieve the targets. Yes, business is generated and created so maybe this is a way to jumpstart the economy or maybe it’s just putting a marker in the sand, either way its making things happen so in principal that’s good isn’t it? Cynics may think it is not a time to further burden business owners.

The UN Environment Programme created in partnership with major rating tools devised a method to measure carbon emissions from buildings in a consistent way. On Friday 18th I have a meeting with Simon Cavelle, Vice President of The Society and a colleague from the United Nations. The Society will announce a humanitarian initiative at our first Conference 2010 (see www.sbid.org for further news)

In 2008, SMEs (small to medium enterprises) had an annual turnover of £1,500 billion. £6.1 billion of this is an increase on figures for 2007. 

So what does that mean in terms of financing Britain’s economy?

More importantly, what does that mean to you and your business if you are trying to promote opportunities in the year ahead and obtain credit to develop such opportunities as they arise? 

The construction and design industry in general is finding different ways to do business; we have created alternative methods to achieve this, but it take time to do something well. We have of course like all new enterprises researched our business opportunity well. The value is ultimately in the R&D – a capital cost – which is what eventually separates you from your competitors. 

Recently I attended the property industry event of the year at the Dorchester Hotel with 500 leaders of commercial industry, the biggest investors, developers and construction companies in Britain. 

Delegates were informed 33% of all enterprises are in London and South East. These two geographical areas are prime target areas for concentrated business investment opportunities. 

The financial year ahead will be a challenge to all businesses. In researching the 10 sectors in which The Society of British Interior Design represents, we have developed a road map defining the most effective categories for development and growth – the areas The Society will concentrate in the year ahead. We have therefore forged partnering agreements within those sectors and stepped back from those that do not fit our strategic goal. 

On 22nd October I was honoured to form part of 14 industry leaders on an initiative panel at the Bank of England to present views and conditions for industry sectors, to review the past six months and present consulted industry views of members and stakeholders for the six months ahead. 

The aims and objectives of the initiative panel were to identify and present the financial risks of downturn on the design and construction industry sector. The consulted and collated views of the members of The Society of British Interior Design therefore have a powerful influence on how the industry sector is regarded. 

With Christmas parties now in full flow, January will be a moment of truth for businesses that have hidden behind their spin to finally deliver on their claims, only the best will now survive. Next year will be a very interesting year for our profession: we come of age, if not at first, then at last!

With UAE in burn-out mode a saving horizon for the UK economy has taken a shocked step aback.

But its not new news, its not even a shock to those connected with work in the Middle East, many saw this coming for well over a year. It is not a secret that ‘the family’ have long since supported each other and taking in to account the pride of the nation, the family name, the culture of the middle east and the wealth of the family I would be surprised to see Dubai fall totally to its knees.

In my opinion, Dubai was always going to be the Emperors’ new clothes. Built without an infrastructure, how could it survive for more than a decade? It has architecture like no other, was the response to those in business who doubted its longevity. Yes, but it’s built on ego and sand, that’s the first ingredient of the recipe for a fall.

To build a business or a concrete structure requires the same basic rules. Firstly identify the need, and then identify the market: research, and research again. Then factor in the worse possible scenarios such as government changes, financial downturn, competition and consumer needs, and finally address those factors one by one. If it still looks good, then plan, plan and plan again. Be flexible and nimble enough to adapt with your planning as market forces change.

Dubai was developed to demonstrate power, as a built environment. However major infrastructure was delivered only as an afterthought. For example, Dubai did not think to build a transport system until it discovered that it took hours to reach some of the islands. Secondly, Dubai planners did not create a core reason to travel there, such as Singapore’s efforts and success in creating a global shopping destination. Dubai was initially planned to be an alternative gateway to Singapore and cut down on long haul travel for those in the west, thus making the retail facilities, services and choice available in Dubai a major attraction, or not, for customers. As a business consultant I therefore identify two key risks for Dubai: shopping and airlines.

Airlines                                                                                                                                                                                                                        The next step should have been to identify the airlines needs and the shopping demographic. There are two major airlines for Dubai, Emirate Airlines and Etihad, the latter being the newest airline which launched, identified its market, identified the lifestyle and needs of its customer and then designed an airline to fit that need. It also identified its competitor’s services and found its core market was long-haul so Eithad provided short-haul flights. Emirate airlines do not want the short-haul flights blocking their routes; their strategy was to price-out the short trips as they did not want vacant seats for the second leg on their long-haul flights. In doing so, they provided an opportunity for Etihad. Emirates drove their customer-base to a new supplier, with new planes, who provided luxury as a differential. It worked. Etihad is the world’s best airline according to the latest airline awards and having flown on Etihad myself it is absolutely the most luxurious airline (in fact the hotels around the world might learn something from the services and customer-care provided by Etihad!) 

Shopping                                                                                                                                                                                                          Shopping in Dubai is not different to any other international city, in fact I understand it is less interesting, collections are limited as religious beliefs prevent some items from import, so the mix is limited, the price is the same, so why would you carry it across the world when you could buy the same product locally for the same price? It was founded on luxury and therefore the shopping needed to reflect that but ultimately it must have a full mix to fit. Which leaves the destination itself, what does it have to offer? It’s on the sea, has fantastic weather, it’s a safe destination for families and the hotels are super-luxury and super-designed. Dubai pushed the boundaries for design and architecture to its limit, and then more. However, this is good only for a standard 2.4 day stay. As a business destination, it suits the business traveller – however not for anything other than host or attend conferences. This is a doomed formula. Vegas, also known for its conferences and events, has gambling, shows, playgrounds and conferences to sustain it. Dubai for cultural reasons can not replicate this.

So, the lesson learned, is that in a strong market, everyone works, everything makes money and everyone is happy, but when the finance dries up, when jobs are scarce and when push comes to shove, all the gloating and squawking means nothing. To survive you must build a business or destination on a strong foundation to fit the needs of the end user.
