The SBID UK Interior Design Icons were selected to recognise leading design practices throughout the UK who have consistently displayed exceptional standards within our esteemed industry network.

This week’s instalment of the SBID Icon Insights series features 1.61 London. The brand is dedicated to delivering truly exceptional, luxurious homes with the highest levels of design, craftmanship and service underpinned by a persistence and commitment to continually push the boundaries of what is possible.

1.61 London

Who leads design and creative direction at your company?

Michael is the creative director at 1.61 London and leads the design and construction implementation for our projects and developments, whilst Alex runs the client side of the business including sourcing properties and developments and heading up marketing and branding.

1.61 London

Can you share a project that best represents your design style?

We are particularly proud of our latest development, Three Kings Mayfair, which has just completed. 1.61 London found the unique site that sits behind Grosvenor Square and crafted eight beautiful homes representing the pinnacle of contemporary living at one of London’s finest addresses. Completely private and secluded from outside view, Three Kings Mayfair offers a haven of tranquillity with access via a secure gated entry point. Located in the heart of Mayfair, the development is perfectly connected with Oxford Street and Bond Street within a short walking distance. Whether it’s a stroll in the park, shopping trip or dining out, you’ve got all you need on your doorstep.

1.61 London and Urbanwise set up a new joint venture in 2021 after working together on a number of multi-unit new build residential developments with a combined portfolio value of over £1bn. The two developers partnered with Investment firm Valpre Capital for the delivery of the Three Kings Mayfair project.

1.61 London

How does your team collaborate on major projects?

We have spent years finding a best-in-class team that covers the entire remit of sourcing, funding, designing, rendering and then delivering a development or client led project. These in house skills allow us to create a fully considered vision for a project. Each team member is heavily involved in supporting the delivery of any of the projects we are undertaking through continuous teamwork and collaboration under the leadership of Michael who always ensures that the team are laser focused on delivering the absolute best possible result.

1.61 London

What steps do you take to stay at the forefront of the design industry?

Our clients demand that we continue to innovate and source the best products from around the world and so this is a continual process that happens naturally. There are always areas you can improve on and so we always push to find better designs and solutions to problems. Michael is relentless in his pursuit of achieving perfection.

1.61 London

What trends do you see shaping the future of interior design?

For us we always look to incorporate seamless technology into our designs. From an industry standpoint we see a return to detail rather than minimalism and that is something we love because we take pride in really delivering a highly detailed and luxurious design scheme for our projects.

1.61 London

How do you incorporate sustainability into your designs?

This is becoming a necessity in any new build project where you are looking at the new SAP requirements pushing new heating solutions for example. Our latest development incorporates a green roof and as we move forward, we are having to retrofit rather than start from fresh because planning is forcing such changes.

1.61 London

Do you have key partnerships with suppliers, manufacturers, or brands?

This is something that is very different about 1.61 London. We have a huge procurement arm and do not work through intermediaries. Michael and I are passionate about finding the best products in the market and getting the best possible pricing. We were like this from day one and this has now become a real strength for our business with so many unique relationships that are invaluable to us achieving the types of designs/developments we undertake!

About 1.61 London

Matteo De Lise, General Manager at Unox Casa, has given his insights into the industry.

Unox Casa is the high-end residential division of UNOX, the world’s best-selling brand of professional ovens. It was created to bring the performance of the greatest Michelin-starred kitchens into the world’s most exclusive private homes. SuperOven is the first oven to integrate cutting-edge professional technology with iconic Italian design, transforming kitchens into spaces of inspiration, beauty, and performance.

Unox Casa
Unox Casa

What are the origins of the brand?

Unox Casa was born from a bold ambition: to bring the power and precision of the world’s finest professional kitchens into private luxury homes. Backed by more than 30 years of UNOX leadership in the restaurant industry, it reimagines culinary excellence for the residential setting.

The idea took shape during the pandemic, when the desire for professional-grade appliances at home intensified. Inspired by UNOX founders’ personal experiences - and by dinner guests who frequently asked how to recreate restaurant-level cooking at home - SuperOven was born. It represents the world’s first professional oven designed specifically for luxury living, fusing elite performance with iconic Italian craftsmanship.

Unox Casa

How do your products and services enhance interior design projects?

More than an appliance, SuperOven is a design statement. Available in two models - Model 1, a tech-totem with dual chambers, and Model 1S, a compact single-chamber version- it merges professional-grade performance with sculptural elegance, turning the oven into a centrepiece rather than a background element. Unlike traditional appliances that recede quietly into the kitchen, SuperOven stands out with intention thanks to its recognisable aesthetic, striking lines, and finishes that transform it into a jewel of contemporary living, a diamond set into architecture.

Its refined and iconic Italian design allows it to effortlessly integrate into a variety of interior styles - from minimalist and contemporary to industrial or high-tech environments. More than fitting in, it enhances each project by bringing depth, sophistication, and the powerful allure of technology made art. Furthermore, the variety of finishes and installation options (flush, cantilevered, or freestanding) enable a high degree of customisation, empowering designers and homeowners alike to create kitchens that reflect their unique style, vision and personality.

Unox Casa

What value does your specialist sector add to the industry?

In every home, the kitchen is more than just a functional space: it is the beating heart, a place of connection, creativity, and expression. Within it, the oven is a cornerstone: the silent ally around which rituals and memories are built.

At Unox Casa, we bring a new dimension to this central element through the advanced technology embedded in SuperOven. This innovation transforms the cooking experience, allowing users to express their culinary vision without being bound by technical complexity. The oven’s user-friendly digital control panel allows activation of over 400 automatic cooking programmes, for which all it takes is to select the type of food and the desired result and the oven automatically determines the settings, adapting them to the amount of food being cooked. The oven itself becomes a guide for homeowners - adapting, suggesting, and supporting each step of the cooking process.

This means clients are free to focus on what truly matters: enjoying time, experimenting with flavours and colours, and living the kitchen not as a task, but as a pleasure. Our sector redefines luxury not just through design and materials, but by giving time and creativity to those who live the home.

Unox Casa

How do you work with interior designers?

We believe that every home tells a story, and our mission is to ensure the kitchen becomes one of its most compelling chapters. That’s why we created the Design Concierge: a dedicated service tailored to the unique needs of interior designers and architects.

Our team of experts works closely with design professionals from the earliest stages of a project, offering 360-degree bespoke support - from technical guidance to aesthetic consultation. Whether it’s selecting finishes, defining installation details, or seamlessly integrating SuperOven into a custom kitchen concept, we ensure the product enhances the space both visually and functionally.

Through this collaborative approach, Unox Casa doesn’t merely adapt to a design - it elevates it. SuperOven becomes a sculptural and technological centrepiece that embodies the designer’s vision and enriches the client’s daily experience. Ultimately, it’s about reimagining the kitchen around those who live it, delivering true excellence in every detail.

Unox Casa

What has been your most significant company highlight or success from the past year?

One of the most significant milestones of the past year has been the global expansion of Unox Casa into new, strategically relevant markets. From our official launch in Turkey, to new openings in many Latin American countries, and a growing presence in the United Arab Emirates, the brand continues to affirm its international vision.

In particular, the debut in the US market during Art Basel marked a major achievement, underscored by SuperOven Model 1S - Black Edition receiving the prestigious Good Design Award. This recognition celebrates not only the product’s technological innovation but also its sculptural elegance - a perfect expression of Italian design excellence.

These new openings reflect our commitment to bringing our iconic lifestyle, Starred Living, to the world’s most discerning homes. Each new market represents an opportunity to build meaningful connections with local design communities and to inspire new ways of living the kitchen as a space of beauty, performance, and creativity.

Unox Casa

What are the latest trends you’ve noticed in your client’s requests?

One of the most prominent trends among our clients today is the desire for kitchen spaces that embody both clarity and purpose: environments that are at once minimalist, multifunctional, and emotionally meaningful. Clients are increasingly seeking orderly, elegant spaces that serve as true gathering points, hubs for family life and social connection.

The kitchen is no longer a backstage area; it is a central stage, where functionality must be paired with refined aesthetics. This means clean lines, hidden technologies, and intuitive layouts that promote efficient movement between appliances and support a seamless daily experience.

In this evolving landscape, SuperOven becomes a silent ally in everyday life, simplifying the preparation of extraordinary meals and inviting everyone, from expert cooks to curious children, to participate in the pleasure of creating together. It’s technology that brings people closer, making the kitchen not just efficient, but truly alive.

Unox Casa
Unox Casa

How do you see the interior design industry evolving in the year ahead?

In the year ahead, the interior design industry is poised to deepen its focus on digitally empowered living, where technology becomes an invisible yet essential presence in the home. As robotic and intelligent systems take on more daily tasks, domestic spaces will evolve to become cleaner, more intuitive, and inherently minimalist - not just in form, but in function. We foresee a continued rise in designs that embrace ‘quiet’ luxury, expressed through a refined blend of natural and synthetic materials, tactile surfaces, and sculptural elements that awaken the senses.

Within this evolution, the kitchen remains the soul of the home - a space for gathering, creativity, and daily rituals. Here, SuperOven emerges as a natural protagonist, perfectly embodying the balance between technological intelligence and timeless beauty. It frees time, streamlines routines, and above all, brings people together through the shared joy of culinary exploration. Objects of design become real enablers of togetherness, where innovation serves the rituals that truly matter.

Is there anything new you are excited to be working on?

We’re particularly excited about the recent launch of the Unox Casa App: a bold step forward in kitchen digitalisation and a perfect embodiment of our vision for the home of the future. As daily life becomes increasingly shaped by smart technologies, people are seeking tools that offer not just automation, but meaningful, intuitive experiences. The Unox Casa App responds to this shift by transforming the SuperOven into a fully connected companion, capable of empowering users wherever they are.

More than just remote control, the App offers a personalised culinary ecosystem. From real-time monitoring of cooking and cleaning cycles to the ability to create and send custom cooking programmes remotely, every detail is designed to simplify routines while unleashing creative freedom. The “Cook Like a Chef” section, a curated library of recipes developed by our own chefs and Michelin-starred partners, turns the App into an endless source of inspiration, like a digital culinary atelier.

For over 60 years, Amtico has been at the forefront of luxury vinyl tile (LVT) innovation, designing and manufacturing premium flooring solutions for commercial spaces. With a strong heritage in British manufacturing, we specialise in creating high-quality, design-led flooring that enhances interiors across hospitality, workplace, education, healthcare, and commercial residential sectors. Our expertise in bespoke design, precision cutting and laying patterns allows designers to craft genuinely unique spaces backed by technical support, sustainability commitments, and a dedicated design team.

Amtico
Amtico

What are the origins of the brand?

Amtico began its journey in Coventry more than 60 years ago as a pioneering British manufacturer dedicated to creating high-quality flooring. Over the decades, our brand has evolved, blending advanced manufacturing techniques with an uncompromising commitment to design. We push boundaries and develop our collections with new designs, laying patterns and added benefits that shape and inspire commercial interiors. Today, we remain proud to be a British manufacturer with a longstanding history that reflects our expertise and dependability.

Amtico

How do your products and services enhance interior design projects?

At Amtico, we believe that flooring is the canvas for any inspiring design – after all, every floor has a story. We empower designers with various tools – from our CAD design service to the online room visualiser and technical support – that help bring creative visions to life. Our LVT products give designers the freedom to shape projects with creativity and enthusiasm, whether through striking laying patterns, intricate bespoke designs or our wide choice of Wood, Stone and Abstract decors. We work closely with interior designers to curate environments that balance aesthetics, function and durability, offering a unique blend of design freedom, technical support, and a wide range of high-quality products.

Amtico

What value does your specialist sector add to the industry?

Flooring sets the tone for both the look and functionality of a space. Our expertise in LVT allows us to offer solutions that not only elevate interior schemes but also address key challenges in commercial environments – from hygiene and maintenance with our antimicrobial protection to acoustics and safety with special backing layers and enhanced slip resistance. We work hand in hand with designers, offering comprehensive, tailored support to ensure that every project balances style with robust performance in any environment.

Amtico

How do you work with interior designers?

We see every project as a collaboration. Our design and support teams work closely with interior designers to unlock creative possibilities – whether it’s exploring our extensive LVT collections, like Signature and Spacia, or developing bespoke flooring solutions tailored to unique briefs, including custom laying patterns, logos and brand colours. Designers can access our room visualiser tool anytime to experiment with different styles and product combinations in their own space. At the same time, our dedicated specification and technical support teams ensure projects run smoothly from concept to installation. We also offer CPDs and ‘lunch and learns’ and host events that provide insights into not just flooring trends and innovations but also the wider industry, supporting designers at every stage of their journey and making them feel valued and supported.

Amtico

What has been your most significant company highlight or success from the past year?

2024 was a landmark year for Amtico as we celebrated our 60th anniversary – six decades of pushing the boundaries of flooring design and craftsmanship. We also refreshed the Amtico Form collection, which brings authentic wood aesthetics to commercial spaces while offering more manageable maintenance and installation than natural materials. Looking ahead, we remain committed to sustainability, ensuring our products keep inspiring and supporting the evolving needs of the industry.

Amtico

What are the latest trends you’ve noticed in your client’s requests?

Design is more human-centric, with a growing focus on creating inclusive, engaging environments. Interior designers are considering the sensory experience of a space – from textures that encourage interaction to colour choices that influence mood. Neurodiversity also shapes design thinking, with more emphasis on flexible, adaptable spaces that cater to a range of needs. The way we design floors plays a role in all of this, whether through thoughtful zoning, tactile finishes or the calming effect of natural-inspired materials.

Amtico

How do you see the interior design industry evolving in the year ahead?

How we experience spaces is changing, and designers are responding by prioritising wellbeing, sustainability and adaptability. We expect to see an even greater focus on biophilic elements, materiality and multi-sensory design, ensuring spaces feel welcoming and safe. Sustainability is also becoming more transparent, and designers are looking for materials with strong environmental credentials to tell a positive, authentic story. Flooring will continue to be a crucial part of this conversation, helping to define spaces that support both people and the planet.

Is there anything new you are excited to be working on?

There’s always something exciting happening at Amtico! We’re continually developing new products, researching trends and refining our design approach. While we can’t reveal too much just yet, we have some exciting product launches in the works – and you might just spot us at a key industry event later this year. Watch this space!

Richard Davonport, Owner and Managing Director of Davonport Kitchen & Home, has given his insights into the industry.

At Davonport, we have been designing and crafting bespoke handmade kitchens and furniture for over 30 years, creating beautifully tailored interiors that seamlessly blend form and function. Every piece is thoughtfully made in our UK workshop, using the finest materials and time-honoured techniques to ensure lasting quality and character.

Our bespoke approach allows us to collaborate closely with designers and clients, shaping interiors that feel both timeless and entirely personal. Whether it’s a statement kitchen or furniture for the whole home, we take pride in balancing elegance with practicality, ensuring each space enhances the way people live. From initial concept to the final details, our meticulous craftsmanship and dedication to excellence, create interiors that feel effortlessly refined, unique, and made to stand the test of time.

Davonport Kitchen & Home
Davonport Kitchen & Home

What are the origins of the brand?

Davonport was founded on a deep appreciation for craftsmanship, something that has been part of my family for generations. My father, Aubrey, was a member of the British Woodcarvers Association, and from an early age, I was surrounded by the art of woodworking. This instilled in me a love for fine craftsmanship and attention to detail.

After studying Furniture Design and Cabinet Making, I set up my own workshop in the early 1990s, initially creating fine furniture before shifting my focus to handcrafted kitchens in 1996. As demand grew, so did Davonport, leading to our move in 2013 to a purpose-built workshop and showroom in Colchester. While the business has evolved, our values remain the same—working with the finest materials, using time-honoured techniques, and creating furniture that not only enhances interiors but also stands the test of time. As I often say, “It’s not just a job, as the furniture we make carries my name.”

Davonport Kitchen & Home

How do your products and services enhance interior design projects?

At Davonport, we believe that every interior should be a reflection of the people who live in it. Our bespoke kitchens and furniture are thoughtfully designed to complement each project’s unique aesthetic, ensuring a seamless integration with the wider interior scheme. No two kitchens are ever the same—we take the time to understand the vision, crafting spaces that are not only beautiful but also practical and tailored to individual lifestyles.

Our expertise extends beyond cabinetry, allowing us to support interior designers with everything from spatial planning to material selection, ensuring a cohesive and well-balanced design. Whether providing guidance on colour palettes, lighting, or statement finishes, we collaborate closely to create interiors that feel harmonious and considered. From initial concept to installation, our meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail ensure that every space we create is timeless, functional, and designed to be lived in.

Davonport Kitchen & Home

What value does your specialist sector add to the industry?

We feel that truly exceptional interiors are built on craftsmanship, quality materials, and thoughtful design. Our bespoke approach allows us to create kitchens and furniture that not only enhance the aesthetic of a space but also add genuine long-term value to a home. Unlike mass-produced alternatives, our handcrafted pieces are made to last for generations, promoting sustainability and reducing the need for replacements over time.

For interior designers and architects, this means having complete creative freedom—every detail is tailored to complement the wider scheme, ensuring a cohesive and beautifully considered result. Our expertise and collaborative approach allow us to support designers at every stage, from concept through to installation, making the process seamless. In an industry that often leans toward fast furniture and fleeting trends, we take pride in championing authenticity, craftsmanship, and enduring quality, helping to create interiors that are as timeless as they are functional.

Davonport Kitchen & Home

How do you work with interior designers?

Collaboration is the key to creating beautifully cohesive interiors. We work closely with interior designers, offering a flexible approach that adapts to the needs of each project. Whether providing full kitchen and interior planning—including flooring, lighting, and colour schemes—or simply focusing on the layout and design of our bespoke furniture, we tailor our involvement to complement the designer’s vision.

Our handcrafted kitchens and interiors are designed to seamlessly integrate into wider schemes, ensuring a balance of aesthetics and functionality. We understand the importance of detail, precision, and high-quality materials, which is why we take the time to refine every aspect of our work. With our expertise in bespoke craftsmanship and an open, collaborative approach, we help designers bring their concepts to life, creating interiors that feel considered, cohesive, and effortlessly elegant.

Davonport Kitchen & Home

What has been your most significant company highlight or success from the past year?

Sustainability is an integral part of our approach, and in 2023, we took a significant step forward by installing solar panels across our 20,000 sq. ft. workshop roof. This investment now allows us to generate enough electricity to fully power our showroom and head office, as well as a substantial portion of our workshop, reducing our reliance on external energy sources.

This builds on our previous sustainability efforts, including upgrading our workshop roof insulation in 2022 to improve energy efficiency. These initiatives reflect our ongoing commitment to responsible manufacturing—ensuring that our handcrafted kitchens and interiors are not only made to last but are also created with a mindful approach to the environment. By continuously refining our processes, we aim to support designers in creating interiors that are as considered and sustainable as they are beautiful.

Davonport Kitchen & Home

What are the latest trends you’ve noticed in your client’s requests?

We’re seeing a renewed appreciation for natural timbers in kitchen and interior design, whether as a primary material or a subtle accent. This shift towards organic textures brings warmth and authenticity to spaces, and as craftsmen, we love working with wood to highlight its unique character and timeless appeal.

Alongside this, there’s a growing preference for bold statement stones, with advancements in porcelain technology allowing for full bodied veined surfaces and dramatic finishes. These materials add a sense of luxury and individuality to worktops and splashbacks, helping to create kitchens with real personality.

We’re also noticing a resurgence in deeper mouldings and intricate detailing, adding depth and elegance to interiors. This blend of classic craftsmanship with contemporary materials reflects a movement towards enduring, thoughtfully designed spaces—something we always strive to achieve in our bespoke kitchens and furniture.

Davonport Kitchen & Home

How do you see the interior design industry evolving in the year ahead?

The interior design industry continues to evolve, with a growing focus on sustainability, natural materials, and designs that stand the test of time. More than ever, clients are moving away from fast trends and instead investing in high-quality, thoughtfully crafted interiors that feel personal and enduring.

Bespoke craftsmanship is becoming increasingly sought after, as homeowners look for spaces that reflect their lifestyle and individuality. From carefully curated materials to tailored design details, there is a shift towards interiors that balance beauty with longevity—creating homes that feel both considered and effortlessly timeless.

Davonport Kitchen & Home

Is there anything new you are excited to be working on?

We’re fortunate to be involved in a variety of beautifully designed projects, from bespoke kitchens to full-home interiors, each crafted to reflect the unique style and needs of our clients.

Beyond our design work, we’re particularly excited about our ongoing commitment to nurturing the next generation of craftsmen and women. Our Davonport Gauge of Excellence competition, held at a local college, challenges aspiring artisans to test their skills in a timed furniture-making challenge, helping them refine their craft under real-world conditions. We also work closely with the college, hosting showroom and workshop days where students can experience the practical application of their skills—whether in design, cabinet making, or fine craftsmanship. Supporting emerging talent in the industry is something we’re incredibly passionate about, and we’re always looking for ways to inspire and encourage the future of bespoke furniture making.

What does being an SBID Accredited Industry Partner mean to you?

Becoming an SBID Accredited Industry Partner is a wonderful achievement and a reflection of our dedication to bespoke kitchen and interior design. Craftsmanship has always been at the heart of what we do, and this accreditation is a valued recognition of the professionalism and high standards we bring to every project.

For our clients and design partners, it serves as a mark of trust and quality, reinforcing our commitment to thoughtful, well-crafted interiors that balance beauty and function. Being part of SBID allows us to align with the highest industry standards, ensuring our designs not only meet but exceed expectations, creating spaces that feel both timeless and considered.

Feeling overwhelmed by the endless tasks of running an interior design business? You’re not alone. Many designers start with a passion for creativity but quickly find themselves bogged down by admin work, client management, and project logistics. The key to moving past this chaos? Streamlined processes.

Katie Malik Design Studio

Why Processes Matter

Processes are the backbone of any successful business. They transform scattered tasks into a seamless workflow, allowing you to focus on what you do best—designing beautiful spaces. Without clear systems, inefficiencies creep in, leading to missed deadlines, miscommunications, and potentially lost profit. A well-defined process ensures that every project runs smoothly, reducing stress and improving client satisfaction.

The Efficiency-Profit Connection

Efficiency and profitability go hand in hand. A structured workflow means less wasted time, fewer costly mistakes, and a more professional experience for clients. When every step of your design process is mapped out, from client onboarding to final installation, you gain control over your time and resources.

Consider this: A well-organised client intake system ensures you gather all necessary information upfront, preventing back-and-forth emails that consume valuable time. Similarly, a detailed procurement checklist minimises ordering errors and costly returns. By implementing these systems, you enhance your workflow, increase productivity, and ultimately boost your bottom line.

Key Processes Every Interior Designer Needs

1. Client Onboarding – A structured approach to welcoming new clients ensures clarity on expectations, budgets, and timelines from the start- you should consider including documents such a Welcome Pack, Project Proposal, Pricing document- everything that you can easily send to the client- that way your client will feel you are running a business and treat you as a professional you want to be.
2. Project Management – Using tools like Trello or Asana can help track project progress, assign tasks, and set deadlines. There are many more out there, but you can start with a free one, such as Trello.
3. Sourcing and Procurement – Standardised ordering and vendor communication methods prevent costly errors and delays. Start with excel and if you want to use software, invest in Estimac.
4. Design Presentation Workflow – Establishing templates for presentation boards, saves time and maintains brand consistency.
5. Financial Management – Clear invoicing and payment tracking systems help maintain cash flow and avoid payment delays. Invest in Quickbooks or equivalent software that you can connect to your bank and credit cards.

Mastering All Pillars of Business

Success in interior design requires more than just great design skills. To build a thriving business, you need to master all the core pillars: marketing, branding, and sales.

Marketing: Attracting the Right Clients

Marketing is about visibility and connection. To attract your ideal clients, you need a clear strategy that combines social media, content marketing, and networking. Consistency is key—regular blog posts, Instagram updates, and email newsletters keep you on your audience’s radar. A strong online presence builds credibility and trust, making it easier to convert inquiries into projects.

Branding: Setting Yourself Apart

Branding is more than just a logo and colour palette—it’s the essence of your business. A strong brand communicates your unique style, values, and the experience you provide. Whether it’s through a signature design approach, personalised client interactions, or a cohesive online presence, your brand should clearly differentiate you from competitors and create a lasting impression.

Sales: Turning Leads into Clients

Many designers struggle with sales because they see it as pushy or uncomfortable. However, selling is simply about communicating your value effectively. A solid sales process ensures potential clients understand how your services can transform their space and why investing in professional design is worth it. Clear pricing, compelling proposals, and a well-structured consultation process make closing deals smoother and more confident.

Katie Malik Design Studio

Systems for Success

Creating efficient processes doesn’t mean adding complexity; in fact, it simplifies your business. By developing checklists, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and automation tools, you ensure consistency and reliability in every project.

For example, automating client follow-ups through a CRM system saves time while improving client engagement. Using pre-made templates for contracts and proposals eliminates repetitive work and enhances professionalism. These small but impactful changes lead to greater efficiency and a more scalable business model.

With over a decade of firsthand experience navigating the challenges of running a business, Katie Malik, from Katie Malik Design Studio, has developed a structured, systemised approach designed specifically to help interior designers build sustainable and successful businesses. This inspired Katie to create an online course that covers every essential aspect of running a design business—from marketing and branding to financial management and client processes. If you're ready to establish a thriving business with confidence and clarity, visit www.interiordesigndeconstructed.co.uk to explore the course details and take the next step in your journey.

Lucy Black, Head of Business Development at Kenoteq, has given her insights into the industry.

Kenoteq has been established to bring positive environmental impact to interior and architectural projects, disrupting the status quo of traditional brick production and bringing a more modern and sustainable material to the fore – with a contemporary edge and wide colour choice. Kenoteq’s award-winning K-Briqs and K-Slips are made from near 100% recycled construction and demolition waste and are unfired and made to a low energy production process ensuring an end product that is ultra-low carbon, durable and 100% recyclable at its end of life.

K-BRIQ Medero Dark Grey
K-BRIQ Gillespie Magenta

What are the origins of the brand?

Kenoteq started life in Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh, developing into a research spin-out project with Scottish waste management company, Hamilton Waste & Recycling. Heriot Watt University was carrying out research into circular economy applications for construction and demolition waste and Hamilton Waste & Recycling were looking for new applications for their recycled gypsum from waste plasterboard and so a company was born in 2019. It has taken another 5 years to raise investment, set up a commercial scale production facility and push through product, quality and environmental certifications, but 2005 will see Kenoteq roll out the manufacture of 3 million low carbon K-Briqs and K-Slips, thereby breathing new life into 6,600 tonnes of recycled construction and demolition materials and saving them from landfill. These 3 million products will provide 50,000 m2 of coverage for interiors and facades – as well as saving 1,365 tonnes of carbon emission equivalent (CO2e) compared to if traditional bricks or brickslips had been manufactured!

Photography: Katerina Antos-Lewis

How do your products and services enhance interior design projects?

The products not only look striking, but they also have a really interesting circular economy story to lend to a project - and can help educate those living, working or using the space that regenerative and sustainable materials are the future, leaving our earth’s finite raw materials intact, saving materials from landfill, reducing our carbon footprint significantly – and they can be recycled at their end of life!

The K-Briq and K-Slip are coloured using recycled pigments and so choosing from a wide colour palette of 12 certified colours means they can lend either a traditional, contemporary or vibrant edge to a project depending on the colours chosen. Our Pure Black, Medero Dark Grey and Medero Light Grey can look very bold and contemporary, whist our Chapman Burnt Oranges and Watt Browns can help bring a warmer, more traditional feel to a project. And then there are our more striking colours – Heriot Mustard & Mustard Light, Gullane Cyan and Cyan Light and Gillespie Magenta and Magenta Light that ooze personality whether used individually or together for walling, features, furniture or surfaces.

Our brickslips are naturally a popular choice over bricks for interior designers to preserve floorspace and have a lighter solution to work with. We’ve developed our range of brickslips this year so not only do we offer a brick-faced slip in each colour, but we also have a cut-faced slip in each colour. The cut-faced slips have a terrazzo feel, beautifully exposing fragments of the bound recycled materials – and exposing more of this history of the product.

Photography: Josh Linnemann

What value does your specialist sector add to the industry?

Locally made, low carbon materials and those grounded in the circular economy are key to the industry reducing its environmental impact and carbon footprint. The certified inert waste materials used in Kenoteq’s K-Briqs and K-Slips are all currently sourced in the UK but are readily available worldwide, meaning that as we scale and grow, we can set-up production facilities on a regional basis internationally, providing a solution to the local construction and demolition waste piles and providing locally manufactured products for local projects. This will not only reduce the transportation and importation of heavy materials, but it will also support local supply chains and create local jobs all whilst providing beautifully aesthetic low carbon materials for interiors and the wider built environment.

How do you work with interior designers?

We are currently delivering CPD sessions on a personal or virtual basis to interior design and architectural practices to share our story and product range. And we are also working with clients who believe in our ethos and want to introduce us to their designers to look for demonstrator projects for these new products. We’ve also been very fortunate to win a number of awards over the last few years that have raised awareness of our brand and made us some fantastic connections. It’s great when the interior designers seek us out! We won the Dezeen Awards in 2022 for Sustainable Design winning both the global public vote and the judges’ votes. We’ve recently completed an interior project for Europe’s largest retailer, the Schwarz Group, for some interior walls in their flagship sustainability hypermarket store and were delighted that Skidmore Owings Merrill (SOM) included us as a key material in a flagship COP28 Pavilion in Dubai for Dubai Holding who own the Jumeirah Group and large scale hotel, leisure and real estate. The Pavilion has since been deconstructed and rebuilt again as a legacy feature in Dubai Holdings’ HQ.

On a collaborative level, the team have good experience and can advise on Whole Life Carbon accounting and also, for every project we supply, we also provide key storytelling data in terms of how much recycled material is within each project and how much carbon has been saved compared to using traditional fired brick products. We try to bring that alive for each particular project. For example, a recent counter project for Gail’s Bakery saved the carbon equivalent of boiling the water for 100,000 cups of coffee just through the selection of the recycled low carbon K-Briq over a traditional brick!

K-BRIQ Gullane Cyan

What has been your most significant company highlight or success from the past year?

Finally completing our product certification testing for the material allows us to confidently provide all the technical specification data that interior designers and architects are looking for from compressive strength and durability (both high!) to fire ratings. Our Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) will also be published very soon to provide verified environmental and carbon data.

Moving into our launch phase and supplying into early adopter projects has been a key highlight, from domestic interiors, to museums and galleries to flagship stores like Kaufland – it is great after our long journey to see the products finally being used in a multitude of applications and making an environmental statement.

Photography: Josh Linnemann

What are the latest trends you’ve noticed in your client’s requests?

Within interiors, it is our Medero Dark Grey and Gullane Cyan and Cyan Light that are seeing the most project interest – and we can see that too in our page visits on our website. The Medero Dark Grey is striking and contemporary and brings smokey tones to projects. The Gullane Cyan and Cyan Light bring teal and turquoise tones to a project and can look very sharp and fresh teamed with light mortars.

Some designers want to bring their own mark to projects with the development of bespoke colours and that is a service we can offer whether it is to colour match in a refurbishment project or match a brand colour, or just evoke the right tone and mood for the wider project palette.

K-BRIQ Gullane Cyan

How do you see the interior design industry evolving in the year ahead?

There is definitely increasing awareness amongst the interior design community of the environmental importance of material selection, and the impact that material choice can have on both the project’s carbon footprint both at delivery and its end of life and deconstruction. Initiatives such as Interior Designer Declares adds additional weight to the movement within the sector, inspiring, educating, collaborating and campaigning for a more sustainable future. This movement across the sector will continue to grow and gain pace in the year ahead.

K-SLIP - Medero Light Grey and Cut-Face Light Grey

Is there anything new you are excited to be working on?

2025 and 2026 are the years where you will see the K-Briq and K-Slip in their myriad of colours appearing in more and more projects from our pipeline. We have two great theatre projects in the pipeline which we can’t wait to share.

What does being an SBID Accredited Industry Partner mean to you?

As a young business, it is important to gain verification and be acknowledged as a player in an established industry. The SBID provide good information, platforms, access to networks and event opportunities that help Kenoteq make the right connections and create strong brand, product and project awareness and we will look forward to using the services more extensively this year.

Lucy Black, Head of Business Development at Kenoteq

Becca Cranfield, Director of Athena Stonecare, has given her insights into the industry.

Athena Stonecare
Athena Stonecare

What are the origins of the brand?

Athena Stonecare is a family run business headed up by myself and my husband Dave Cranfield. The Company was Founded by Dave in 2012 and is now firmly established as one of the leading stone restoration providers in the UK partnering with Mandrin Stone, Fired Earth and Artisans of Devizes to provide ongoing stone maintenance services. I joined the business in 2018 and originally took on a hybrid role as a second pair of hands on site while growing the business. I’m now more likely to be found networking, giving talks and managing client relationships. Dave leads a team of 4 on site and still carries out every site visit and sample.

Athena Stonecare

How do your products and services enhance interior design projects?

The focus of our services is all about returning it to its original condition. It could be that a client is having a kitchen refit and wants to keep their existing stone floor. Or a new section of stone is being added to the property in an extension and the older stone needs to be refinished to match. It might even be as simple as the stone needing a refresh after a renovation project is complete. Occasionally we are even called in to rectify damage caused during a build, or an installation issue. Our goal is simply to help you to make sure that natural stone is a feature of your projects.

Athena Stonecare

What value does your specialist sector add to the industry?

Outside of the services that we provide, we are passionate about providing guidance on how to care for stone. Our Athena Aftercare guide was developed in 2022 in response to requests for advice on how to keep the stone surfaces we restored looking as good as when we left. This is now distributed by stone suppliers and fabricators and is available for anyone who specifies or installs stone. Knowing how to care for stone is essential as soon as it is installed – and it’s not difficult if you know how. Stone is durable and so the only way to ensure its timelessness is by looking after it from day one.

Athena Stonecare

How do you work with interior designers?

As well as providing restoration services for projects with existing stone surfaces, we are also always on hand to offer advice. Being the people that see the stone in situ – and so often with avoidable issues – we are well placed to give an independent review. Our expertise are often called upon when selecting stone to comment on the suitability and note any specific care that the stone might need. We are always happy to review photos of stains, cracks and marks too and advise on the restorability. We want to make sure that anyone who chooses to use natural stone can enjoy it forever, whether they embrace the patina that develops over time or invest in professional maintenance to see it elegantly endure.

Athena Stonecare

What has been your most significant company highlight or success from the past year?

Achieving our SBID accreditation! This is a significant step in our journey as it shows that the industry is keen to learn more about natural stone. We are hopeful that the guidance we provide can help Interior Designers to make more informed choices when using natural stone. It is the most bespoke material that you could work with and so misunderstood. We are hoping that we can change that narrative and help more Designers to specify stone in their projects.

Athena Stonecare

What are the latest trends you’ve noticed in your client’s requests?

We have seen an increase in clients wanting to change the finish of their stone – from polished to honed or vice versa. This could be due to the tile only being available in a certain finish, or simply because the customer has changed their mind. This is one of the cool things about stone that lots of people don’t realise. You can change the finish at any point. This is common with worktops as a honed finish can be seen as a little more practical. Although it’s not actually more hard wearing, a matte/velvet finish will show scratches and marks a lot less obviously and make it a popular choice.

Athena Stonecare
Athena Stonecare

How do you see the interior design industry evolving in the year ahead?

There is a huge focus on sustainability and quite rightly so. This is moving away from just looking at the carbon footprint or embodied carbon but also considering how to make a design timeless. Stone fits in well to this ethos. Not only does is outperform its counterparts in many measures of sustainability but it is also durable and restorable. Most importantly, it never goes out of fashion. A limestone floor will look as good with today’s pantone of the year as it does with next years.

Athena Stonecare

Is there anything new you are excited to be working on?

We’ve always got lots of projects on the go as our average job size is 2-3 days. This high turnaround always keeps us on our toes. Intermingled with this, is a few large projects and some historic and prestigious properties that we’ve submitted quotes for more recently. You’ll have to keep an eye on our socials to see how we get on!

What does being an SBID Accredited Industry Partner mean to you?

It’s a real honour and an opportunity for us to share out passion. We are looking forward to getting involved and meeting lots of members over the coming months.

Becca Cranfield, Director of Athena Stonecare

About Athena Stonecare

Natural stone is an investment and we are committed to ensuring that its beauty endures. We specialise in working with marble, limestone, travertine, granite, and all types of natural stone, ensuring that stone will continue to be a beautifully sustainable feature within any property. As natural stone restoration experts we work with floors, worktops, shower walls, sinks and vanity units. The ongoing care of stone is important to us too and so we have developed a suite of advice and guidance on how to maintain the finish of any stone surface. This is distributed through stone suppliers across the UK and is also available to anyone who works with natural stone.

Raman Kaur, Associate Design Manager at 4SPACE, has given her insights into the industry.

After graduation, I went straight into working as a graduate in the UK and never looked back. The design world is vast and multifaceted, and I wanted to experience all it had to offer. I tried my hand at every sector within the field—conceptual design, detailing, site supervision, FFE, design management—both locally and internationally. By doing this, I cultivated a well-rounded skill set, preparing myself for leadership in an industry that demands versatility and adaptability.

But let’s be real: leadership isn’t just about ticking boxes or gaining experience in every corner of the industry. It’s about developing a deep understanding of the intricacies of each phase of a project, as well as recognising your own strengths and weaknesses. However, the path to leadership—especially as a woman—is anything but straightforward.

4SPACE

The Unspoken Challenge: Being a Woman on Site

One of the most significant challenges I’ve faced has been working on-site with male contractors. The design and construction industries, as progressive as they may claim to be, still harbor traditional mindsets. The idea of taking direction from a woman—especially one giving orders on build and construction—has often met with skepticism or outright resistance. The old boys’ club mentality still lingers, albeit more subtly than before.

How did I overcome this? By knowing my stuff. Confidence, in my opinion, stems from competence. The moment you demonstrate that you know what you’re talking about, attitudes shift. But this doesn’t mean cracking jokes to break the ice or trying to "blend in" with the male-dominated environment. It means staying work-focused, maintaining professionalism, and showing that you’re there to get the job done—period.

4SPACE

Mentorship: Male Dominated, Yet Invaluable

Mentorship has been a pillar of my career. While only one of my mentors has been female, I’ve found value in the guidance I’ve received from my male mentors. That being said, I won’t sugarcoat the reality: seeing more women in leadership roles, particularly in places like Dubai, has been nothing short of inspiring. It’s a reminder that the tide is turning, even if slowly. The support from mentors—male or female—has pushed me forward, but it’s also a testament to how far we still need to go to normalise female leadership in our field.

4SPACE

Empowering the Next Generation of Female Designers

Now that I’m in a leadership role, I’m committed to empowering other women entering the field. And here’s my take: don’t limit yourself. Too often, we see female designers pigeonholed into certain roles—interior styling, FFE, the so-called "softer" aspects of design. This is nonsense. If you want to work in construction detailing, site supervision, or structural planning, go for it. Understanding the full scope of design—from conceptualisation to site execution—is crucial to becoming a truly great designer. I encourage young women to try every sector of design so they can make informed choices about their careers.

But let’s address the elephant in the room: confidence. Women in this industry often struggle to be taken seriously. This is particularly true when working with men who may unconsciously (or consciously) question your authority. I say: push through. Your knowledge, skill set, and determination will speak louder than their preconceived notions.

4SPACE

Leadership and Work-Life Balance: An Unapologetic Perspective

At the start of my career, I had no work-life balance. I was laser-focused on my goals, and everything else took a backseat. And to be honest, I don’t regret that. In industries as demanding as ours, sacrifices are often necessary. But now, I’ve found a balance. I work hard during my working hours and protect my weekends. Maintaining this balance isn’t just important for your mental health—it’s crucial for your effectiveness in the long run. Burnout helps no one.

For aspiring female leaders, my advice is simple: know your limits. The pressure to perform, both in leadership and personal life, is relentless. But you’re no good to anyone—your team, your clients, or yourself—if you’re constantly running on empty. Take time for yourself, and understand that leadership is a marathon, not a sprint.

4SPACE

The Bigger Picture: What Organisations Must Do

Organisations need to step up. If we want more female leaders in design and architecture, companies must foster environments where women are given the same opportunities as men—without exception. This means supporting women through mentorship, providing equal opportunities for leadership development, and, importantly, giving us a chance to lead without questioning our capabilities.

For me, leadership is about inclusivity and diversity. And it’s not just about hiring women for the sake of diversity statistics. It’s about recognizing that a diverse team is a stronger team. I focus on giving everyone an equal opportunity, regardless of gender, background, or culture. This doesn’t mean glossing over weaknesses or coddling employees; it means identifying strengths and challenging them to improve, just as my mentors did for me.

4SPACE

Breaking the Stereotypes: We’re Not Just Here for Pretty Fabrics

There’s an insidious stereotype in our industry: women are only good at picking fabrics, designing interiors, and making things "pretty." This couldn’t be further from the truth. Women can and should work across all sectors of design—construction, detailing, structural planning, you name it. Men can excel in FFE design just as women can excel in structural engineering. The idea that gender should influence your role in design is outdated and frankly, insulting. As leaders, it’s our job to break these stereotypes and push for a more equal playing field.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Female Leadership in Design

So, where does that leave us? The landscape is changing, slowly but surely. Social media, industry events, and female-driven initiatives are pushing us forward. But we still have a long way to go. I want to see more ethnic women in leadership, especially on construction sites where women are still underrepresented. And here’s the kicker: the real progress will come when gender is no longer the focal point of the conversation. When we can talk about leadership without attaching a gender label to it, that’s when we’ll know we’ve truly succeeded. Until then, the fight continues. But one thing is for sure: we’re not going anywhere.

What has been your most significant company highlight or success from the past year?

This past year has been monumental for Dogan London, with several high-profile projects showcasing our craftsmanship and expanding our reach. A standout highlight was our collaboration with The Ned in Qatar, where we supplied bespoke furniture for a luxurious hospitality setting. This project not only exemplified our ability to deliver complex designs on a large scale but also solidified our presence in the competitive Middle Eastern market. Additionally, our continued working with Soho House on various projects, including the Soho House in Strand and great to be part of Martin Brudnzki Design Bachalania, underscored our capacity to meet tight deadlines while maintaining exceptional quality. Another significant milestone was the growing demand from private clients, reflecting our adaptability and reputation in the luxury furniture market. These achievements reaffirm our commitment to excellence and our ability to deliver unique, tailored solutions that leave a lasting impression.

Dogan London

What are the latest trends you’ve noticed in your client’s requests?

In recent months, we’ve observed a growing demand for multifunctional furniture that balances practicality with sophisticated design. Clients are increasingly prioritizing sustainable materials like Iroko timber, aligning with global trends toward eco-friendly living. Neutral tones paired with bold, statement accents are also gaining popularity, reflecting a desire for timeless yet modern aesthetics. Personalization is a key trend, with clients requesting unique details such as intricate patterns, custom finishes, and tailored dimensions to suit their individual tastes and needs. Another notable trend is the integration of technology within furniture, such as hidden charging stations and modular designs that adapt to hybrid work environments. These evolving preferences highlight the importance of flexibility, sustainability, and functionality in today’s interior design projects, and we’re proud to adapt and innovate to meet these demands.

Dogan London

How do you see the interior design industry evolving in the year ahead?

The interior design industry is poised to embrace a future defined by sustainability, innovation, and adaptability. As clients become more environmentally conscious, the demand for sustainable materials and processes will continue to grow, encouraging designers and manufacturers to prioritize eco-friendly practices. Advances in digital technology, such as virtual reality and AI-driven design tools, are likely to play an increasingly significant role in the design process, enabling more efficient collaboration and customization. Additionally, the rise of hybrid living and working spaces will drive the need for adaptable, multifunctional furniture that blends aesthetics with practicality. Wellness-focused designs, incorporating natural elements and biophilic principles, will also take centre stage as people seek environments that promote health and tranquillity. At Dogan London, we’re excited to contribute to this evolution by offering innovative, sustainable solutions that meet the changing needs of the industry.

Additionally, we’re expanding our presence in the Middle Eastern market, driven by growing interest in our bespoke offerings following successful projects like The Ned in Qatar. We’re also exploring new collaborations with leading interior designers, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in bespoke furniture manufacturing. These initiatives mark an exciting chapter for Dogan London as we continue to evolve and adapt to the needs of our clients while maintaining our dedication to quality and service excellence.
