Using Textures in Minimalistic Spaces 13th September 2022 | IN DESIGN ADVICE | BY SBID

Working on a minimal interior design scheme? The trick to creating interest with these kinds of designs is to utilise texture. This keeps the interior interesting by adding depth and contrast without making it too cluttered. You can experiment with a lot of different textures, simply by mixing up the materials used, from the floors and the walls, to the furniture and soft furnishings!

Wall Textures

Adding texture is often simplest when it comes to walls. Plaster can be easily shaped with special trowels or applying with sponges. You can also use wallpaper with fibres added to give it more texture, while continuing the minimalist theme of the space. Large, bold textures can make quite the statement, while more subtle textures, such as small dots or lines, can make a space feel more refined and elegant.

Focus on Flooring

Texture can also be incorporated into flooring coverings. A fluffy carpet creates a very different effect to a hardwood floor, and polished marble contrasts with short carpets. With so many options, it’s easy to keep a space minimal while adding plenty of textural interest by contrasting soft rugs and carpets with other surfaces and metals.

Tone-on-Tone Wall Art

While the rest of the room is simple and stripped back, you can draw the eye to a central fixture or piece of furniture as a key point of intrigue. There are many items that will work well for this. This could be a marble fireplace, large light fixture with ornate decorations or a statement coffee table. Consider using a glass centre piece where the rest of the room is opaque. Anything that is unique and stands out will pull the attention to that focal point.

Statement Fixtures

Adding more texture to a minimalist theme is the best way to keep a space from feeling too empty or vacant. It’s an easy method of upgrading your interior design to create an impactful, yet minimal space – and you’ll find that clients appreciate the eye for detail!
