LiGHT 25 is about far more than just product displays. Alongside hundreds of architectural, decorative, and technical lighting brands, attendees can enjoy an array of engaging content, including the return of the dedicated two-day [d]arc thoughts talks programme, which, for another year running, is in collaboration with Lutron. This two-day content stream features influential voices and thought-provoking discussions tackling the most pressing issues in lighting, technology, and design.
The exhibition offers unrivalled opportunities for networking, branding, and social engagement. Visitors can connect with exhibitors directly on their stands, enjoy late-night welcome drinks on the opening evening, and take part in the much-loved LiGHT Lunch on day two. More informal catchups can happen over coffee at Jacks, the on-site gallery-level café, or in the LiGHT WORK lounge — a calm, dedicated space designed for deeper conversations and collaborative meetings.
Helen Ankers, Managing Editor at [d]arc media, said: “We are delighted to bring the lighting and design communities together for the most anticipated UK event in the lighting industry for the fourth year running. LiGHT 25 is not just for lighting designers - we value bringing together inspiring leaders and passionate people to share ideas and solutions to grow the future of the entire industry. A common misconception is that trade shows dedicated to lighting specification are just for lighting specialists, yet by bringing together architects, interior designers and other professionals in the community, with innovative brands and suppliers, LiGHT 25 is the perfect opportunity to network and seek inspiration, whatever role you play in a project.”
Completely free to attend, LiGHT 25 continues to set the standard for lighting exhibitions in the UK.

As the clocks go back and evenings draw in, the kitchen reclaims its place as the true heart of the home. Autumn brings with it a slower pace – candlelit suppers, warming meals and interiors that invite comfort. Yet, within the clean architectural lines of a contemporary kitchen, achieving that sense of warmth requires a careful balance between precision and personality.
At Roundhouse, each kitchen is designed to achieve harmony between form and feeling. While minimalist design celebrates clarity, bespoke craftsmanship ensures it never becomes cold. By layering materials, finishes and light, Roundhouse designers create spaces that remain refined yet unmistakably welcoming – kitchens that embrace both elegance and emotion.
Texture plays a pivotal role in transforming a cool, contemporary kitchen into a tactile and grounded space. Smooth cabinetry gains depth when paired with fluted timber, ribbed glass or leathered stone, inviting both touch and visual interest. The Roundhouse Kinsey project demonstrates this perfectly – its fluted oak cabinets and stone splashbacks bring richness and rhythm without compromising clean lines.
Underfoot, natural flooring in reclaimed timber, tumbled terracotta or rugged limestone enhances the sense of warmth. Metallic details, from brushed brass handles to softly glowing bronze taps, complete the look with a gentle radiance that catches the evening light.
Lighting defines atmosphere, particularly during darker months. To create a space that shifts effortlessly from functional to intimate, plan lighting in layers – ambient for relaxation, task for practicality, and accent to highlight form and materiality. The illuminated glass display in the Roundhouse Nash kitchen is a perfect example, where concealed LEDs transition the mood from daytime energy to evening calm. Discussing lighting design early ensures circuits, controls and fittings all work in harmony with how you live in the space.
Colour underpins emotional connection, and autumn’s earthy tones offer natural inspiration. Deep forest greens, clays and umbers can be balanced with paler mushroom or stone shades to maintain a contemporary freshness. Pairing paint with timber or stone grounds the palette in nature – a hallmark of Roundhouse design. Even cooler schemes can feel inviting when layered with tactile finishes or subtle metallics that lend softness and depth.
Natural materials offer authenticity, warmth and longevity. Marble with expressive veining, oak shelving or handcrafted ceramics all introduce character and tactility. The Roundhouse Hardings kitchen embraces this philosophy, with natural oak and glazed cabinetry displaying artisan pottery and glassware. Sustainability is integral, too – choosing responsibly sourced timber and low-VOC finishes ensures that luxury remains both beautiful and conscientious.
A truly inviting kitchen encourages people to linger. Consider curved islands, upholstered seating or a built-in banquette that becomes a natural gathering spot. Soft furnishings – linen blinds, wool cushions, woven shades – add acoustic comfort and a relaxed aesthetic. Thoughtful storage solutions, meanwhile, maintain the calm by keeping surfaces clear. The art lies in marrying practicality with beauty, where every detail supports a sense of ease and belonging.

As an interior designer, the story your materials tell should flow effortlessly from lifelike 3D renderings to clear, construction-ready 2D documentation. That’s where Vectorworks Architect and its hybrid drawing environment shine. Its features for texture alignment are designed to streamline both your creative and technical processes, saving time and adding confidence that what you envision is what gets built.
Vectorworks Architect equips you with three powerful features for matching visualization and documentation needs: - Per-Face Texture Mapping - Surface Hatching Synced with Textures - Attribute Mapping Tool
Want to show multiple finishes on a single piece of furniture? Need a statement wall that pops with several materials? Per-Face Texture Mapping gives you complete flexibility.
You can use the texturing tool in Apply to Face mode or simply drag and drop a texture with a shortcut key to apply it to any face of a 3D solid. This approach is perfect for custom joinery, feature walls, and furniture that calls for more than one finish.
A quick tip: when you select a texture in the Object Info palette (OIP), Vectorworks Architect rotates the view to the face you’re mapping. This speeds up precise placement, especially with complex objects. While mapping works at the face level of solid objects, another approach for hybrid objects (like walls) is to assign textures by component. This way, each component has its own texture or hatch and can be overwritten in a similar way as per-face texturing, making it easier to iterate across the entire project.
You can carry the impact created by your 3D work through to your 2D drawings using linked Surface Hatches. These maintain visual fidelity and reduce costly on-site misunderstandings. In the Resource Manager, just edit your texture and assign its corresponding hatch pattern, then make sure Surface Hatches are enabled in Viewport settings.
This connects the dots; your hatch-filled plans and interior elevations now actually match the materials in your renderings. For a smoother construction process, try creating or selecting distinctive hatches for each finish. This helps contractors and clients alike quickly understand your design intention.
It’s not enough for finishes to be present in your construction documentation. They need to look exactly right. The Attribute Mapping tool gives you direct, dynamic control so you can scale, drag, or rotate any applied texture until it aligns perfectly with your vision. Just select the tool from the Basic palette, click on your textured surface, and adjust using the intuitive handles.
This workflow isn’t just for refining stretched or misaligned textures on custom objects. If you change your design later, say, resizing a built-in storage unit, it’s easy to adjust texture alignment so the material’s grain or pattern direction stays consistent. The tool even works on 2D objects that use an image fill, which keeps your renderings and technical drawings polished and professional.
Leveraging all three of these features means you can reduce manual workarounds and stop bouncing between different software for 3D and 2D representations. The result? You spend more time exploring materials and focusing on your clients’ needs, with a lot less time troubleshooting technicalities.
Ultimately, seamless texture alignment means stunning visuals, clearer drawings, and smoother project delivery from concept all the way through construction.
That’s less time worrying about “how,” and more time delighting clients with “wow.”
That’s right. Vectorworks 2026 is here, meaning you can drive your interior designs even further with insightful workflows, advanced Depth Cueing, intuitive Worksheet Slicing, and more.
About Vectorworks
Exceptional design demands exceptional tools - a platform built to deliver absolute creative expression and maximum efficiency. Vectorworks believe your design software should offer the freedom to follow your imagination wherever it may lead you, to seamlessly share your vision at any phase, and to easily interpret the information needed to make the smartest decisions every time.
Continuing their mission to find innovative bathroom products, West One Bathrooms have added Finnish brand, Woodio, to their collection. A modern day bathroom and interior design company, Woodio brings together the best of Nordic design traditions and the use of sustainable bio-material innovation in a contemporary way.
Duncan Waters, Managing Director at West One Bathrooms, explains: “We tirelessly search for designs that blend style with innovation – and this includes offering clients the choice of more sustainable ranges. The materials you choose to put into your bathroom can go a long way to making your home more sustainable and that’s why we’re excited to stock Woodio – exclusive to West One Bathrooms.”
So what makes Woodio so cutting edge in the eco-friendly bathroom world? Duncan continues: “Every product is made from a signature material called Woodio®. It’s the world’s first 100% waterproof wood composite, designed to replace ceramic and stone materials sustainably. The raw material used comes from aspen wood chips, sourced from PEFC and FSC certified forests in Finland, and the range also includes products made from wood chips derived from the by-products of the Finnish forest industry. These wood chips are mixed with polyester resin, which means that half of the material is bio-based, and half is fossil.”
Within the collection is a range of bathroom products including toilets, freestanding baths, basins, accessories and even sheet material that can be used on walls instead of other surface materials. Each can be purchased in one of 14 different shades.
Woodio’s manufacturing process doesn’t require high temperatures so has low energy requirements, and the company also uses 100% renewable energy, too. It also generates minimal material waste, and water is only needed for colouring the wood chips. Thanks to these factors, the carbon footprint of Woodio products is 30-50% lower than that of traditional ceramics or stone-based products. The finished product feels amazing, too – soft, warm and smooth – making it a welcome alternative to traditional bathroom surfaces.
Duncan continues: “The wood chips are hand-dyed using water-soluble stains, achieving beautiful colours inspired by the wild nature of the north – from the colourful forest floor to the snow that covers it in wintertime. It’s a stunning, contemporary range that includes basins, baths, toilets and panels, with an array of shades to choose from. There’s also the possibility to create a bespoke colour for larger orders – this is a great opportunity for interior designers tackling big projects which balance contemporary style with eco-friendly credentials.”
Sustainability also comes from the quality and longevity that Woodio products offer – completely waterproof, scratch-resistant, dirt-repellent and UV-resistant, they’re easy to maintain. The wood used in the designs stores carbon throughout its lifecycle, and at the end of its life, can be disposed of as 100 percent energy waste or returned to Woodio for crushing, reusing and reusing in the manufacture of cement – it’s a brand that really does offer a perfect circular economy.
Woodio is exclusively available at West One Bathrooms.

As 2026 approaches, many homeowners are beginning to plan their kitchen renovation for the year ahead. While cabinetry, colours and worktops remain central to any design, appliances continue to play a vital role in shaping how kitchens look and perform. Premium appliance brand, Miele GB’s Category Lead for Kitchens, Tom Hopper shares his insight into the appliance trends set to influence kitchens in 2026, following the brand’s latest innovations revealed at IFA and the impact of key social proof metrics shaping these trends.
AI powered assistance, voice control functionality and connected smart systems are now integral to modern living, with kitchen appliances being no exception. As well as offering everyday convenience, these smart features can also make a kitchen more accessible, ideal for multi-generational households.
Miele offers smart home integration across its appliances range - from allowing keen cooks to preheat the oven on the way home to making it possible to check the fridge’s contents remotely (new MasterCool models) while on a food shop or open the door using voice control technology. Next year appliances will continue to benefit from AI integration. Miele’s SmartView ID available on selected ovens uses a built in camera and AI technology to identify ingredients, adjust cooking settings and ensure consistent results automatically. When it comes to laundry, Miele’s new Nova washing machine features a patent-pending technique which uses AI to adapt the movement of the drum to the items being washed each time, minimising guesswork.
As induction cooking continues to grow in popularity, so does the demand for intelligent cookware that communicates directly with the hob. “Cookware for induction” has recently emerged as a breakout search term on Google Trends¹, reflecting a surge in interest in smart, precision-led cooking. Miele’s KM8000 induction hob and M Sense Cookware, coming to the UK in May 2026, allow recipes to be sent directly from the Miele app to the hob, with cookware that prompts each next step and adjusts temperature automatically.
As kitchens continue to be multifunctional spaces for more than just cooking and dining, the increasingly popular ‘invisible kitchen’ trend celebrates clean lines and clutter-free design. Hidden or integrated appliances lend themselves perfectly to this trend, helping to create a sense of calm and organisation. Miele’s built-in ovens with AirFry function, combination steam ovens and integrated coffee machines are designed to support this aesthetic – all minimising countertop clutter while offering the functionality of multiple small appliances.
Over the past three months, Pinterest has reported a surge in ‘modern kitchen’ searches, with many homeowners moving away from traditional styles in favour of a more futuristic space. Seamless integration, matt finishes and statement lighting are defining features, with Miele’s handleless built-in appliances and matt black finish ideal for this trend.
2026 sees a return to warmth and tactility, with WGSN highlighting ‘primal sandy tones’ as a key interior trend in its Spring/Summer 2026 colour report. ‘Cream’ has also become a breakout search term on Google Trends, reflecting a broader shift towards soothing, natural palettes. Miele’s Pearl Beige finish features a subtle shimmer, bringing understated luxury to the kitchen.
Discreet, high-performance extraction continues to be a must-have for open-plan spaces, offering quiet efficiency without compromising functionality. Lighting integration and minimal visual impact will be among the top priorities for extraction in 2026. Miele’s new downdraft extractor hood with integrated lighting (available in the UK from May 2026) delivers powerful ventilation while enhancing atmosphere, while Miele’s award winning KMDA range of integrated extraction also provides a discreet option.
This year, the kitchen has started to evolve into a space that promotes balance, calm and health - from appliances that support nutrient-rich cooking methods to noise conscious appliances. Miele’s steam ovens and steam combination ovens are a great way to gently cook delicate fish and vegetables as colours, aromas, tastes, textures and nutritional content will be largely retained. Miele’s upcoming steam drawer, debuted at IFA 2026 and launching in the UK in 2027, will continue to bring healthy steam cooking to more households, even those with compact kitchens. Meanwhile, Miele’s Quiet Mark approved dishwashers help to create a serene, restorative kitchen environment, with Quiet Mark laundry appliances doing the same in utility spaces.
Warming drawers will increase in popularity for 2026, as they make the most of previously un-utilised space. With multiple uses, including defrosting foods, proving dough and warming dishes or cups, they are ideal for compact kitchens and bring restaurant level precision to the home.
Longevity and low energy and water consumption will always be a top priority in the kitchen. Miele’s washing machines automatically release the right amount of detergent for the load type while its heat pump tumble dryers conserve energy and save money; costing just £100 a year to run compared to around £400 a year when using a vented model. Meanwhile, Miele dishwashers feature automatic detergent dispensing technology, which when combined with PowerDisk, reduces detergent consumption by up to 30%. Miele continues to lead the way with its recently upgraded 60cm dishwasher range – now all rated A for energy efficiency. What’s more, most of Miele’s appliances have been engineered to last for 20 years, so they can be enjoyed for many years.
Reducing food waste will continue to be a global focus, with smart refrigeration technology helping households extend freshness and plan meals more efficiently. Miele’s new XXL MasterCool Refrigeration with FoodView, available in the UK from April 2026, allows users to check fridge contents remotely via the Miele app, reducing waste and making weekly meal planning easier than ever.
With the trend for wellness, more homeowners are slowing down and romanticising the little moments in life – with dedicated coffee, wine and breakfast stations helping homeowners do just that. Recently, Pinterest has seen a clear increase in ‘coffee station’ searches, reflecting this trend. Miele’s countertop and built-in machines offer barista-quality coffee at the touch of a button, turning daily rituals into moments of indulgence. Meanwhile, dedicated wine fridges with dual temperature control will continue to be a popular solution for wine storage, especially in homes where entertaining is frequent.

Francine and Trevor Luker, Directors of Element7, have given their insights into the industry.
Born on the Chelsea Embankment in the early 1990s, Element7 began as River Flooring - a name that soon evolved, like our vision, into something greater. Inspired by the seven elements of nature, we became Element7, with wood - our most treasured material - as the seventh. From the start, we set a new benchmark in luxury flooring, pioneering wide-plank designs engineered for radiant underfloor heating - a first in the UK. Innovation and craftsmanship have defined us ever since, from the introduction of grey hardwood floors to exquisite parquet patterns, bespoke creations, and finishes that stand the test of time. In 2016, we opened our flagship 5,000 sq. ft. showroom beside the Chelsea Design Centre - one of the largest flooring spaces in Europe. Here, expansive installations showcase the beauty and versatility of our collections, while our expert team guides each client through an exceptional design journey. Today, Element7 is synonymous with timeless design, innovation, and the finest wood flooring in the world - chosen by visionary architects, leading interior designers, and discerning clients across the UK and beyond.
At Element7, every product and service is designed to elevate exceptional interiors.
Uncompromising Quality - We specialise exclusively in luxury projects, delivering unrivalled quality, longevity, and prestige. Each floor is crafted from the finest materials, meticulously sourced in Italy and finished to perfection. Every installation is backed by our 25-year guarantee, a testament to enduring excellence.
Tailored to Your Vision - Designers can choose from our curated collections or create entirely bespoke finishes - from custom stains and treatments to unique plank widths and lengths - ensuring every floor is as individual as the space it enhances.
Sustainably Sourced - Our wood is responsibly and sustainably sourced, appealing to eco-conscious clients and supporting green building standards without compromising on beauty or performance.
Precision Installation - Our expert installation teams deliver flawless results - from perfect alignment and grading to seamless joints - ensuring superior performance and durability while preventing issues such as gapping or buckling.
The engineered wood sector is more than a source of materials - it’s a driver of innovation, sustainability, and creative freedom. Today’s designers have an unprecedented ability to experiment with texture, colour, and pattern, tailoring each Element7 floor to the unique character of their project. Engineered wood offers seamless integration with glass, steel, porcelain, and concrete - allowing for bold, contemporary interiors that balance warmth and modernity. Sustainability lies at the heart of this progress. At Element7, we are proudly PEFC and FSC certified, upholding the highest environmental standards that define modern architecture and design.
At Element7, we partner closely with interior designers to bring their creative visions to life - offering expertise, inspiration, and a fully bespoke service from concept to completion. Our 5,000 sq. ft. Chelsea showroom showcases large-scale floor installations (9-12 sqm) in a range of species and tones, allowing designers and their clients to truly experience the scale, colour, and grain of each wood. We provide both small samples for mood boards and larger pieces for presentations, helping designers seamlessly integrate our products into their concepts. We work hand in hand with each designer to select or colour-match wood flooring that perfectly complements their project. Our team also conducts pre-installation site visits to ensure optimal conditions and long-term performance. Beyond installation, we support our clients with tailored maintenance guidance, care kits, and a professional repair service - ensuring every Element7 floor remains as timeless and beautiful as the day it was installed.
Our standout achievement in 2025 is establishing a presence at The Design Centre in New York. We are thrilled to be collaborating with premium New York designers and architects on a series of exciting U.S. projects, bringing Element7’s luxury flooring and bespoke expertise to a new international stage.
We’re noticing a clear shift from cool greys toward warm browns and earthy tones, creating interiors that feel natural, inviting, and timeless. Clients are increasingly drawn to artisan-style wood with character - surfaces featuring knots, hand-scraped textures, and distressed finishes that celebrate the natural beauty of the material. Longer and wider planks remain highly sought-after, offering a seamless appearance that highlights the wood’s grain and elegance. Classic patterns such as chevron and herringbone continue to be popular, alongside intricate inlays and borders, adding bespoke detail and sophistication to luxury spaces.
This year, the focus on wellbeing and comfort continues, with homes designed not just for aesthetics but for liveability and warmth. Warm tones paired with natural textures remain popular, while interiors become more personalised, blending styles and materials to create spaces that feel truly lived-in rather than staged. We also see more adventurous design features, with floors and ceilings treated as canvases for artistic expression. Sustainability is now non-negotiable - clients are seeking materials that age beautifully and endure, allowing them to invest once in quality products that stand the test of time.
At Element7, we are passionate about collaboration. We’re currently working with select designers to create curated Element7 Collections tailored to each designer’s vision. We’re also excited to partner with other companies in the premium interiors sector, enabling us to deliver comprehensive luxury interior solutions to designers and architects, combining expertise, quality, and innovation.

Cosentino, a global leader in the production and distribution of innovative surfaces for architecture and design, announces the worldwide launch of its new mineral surfaces brand, Éclos®, aimed at the kitchen and bathroom countertop market. This launch marks a milestone in the global industry by introducing an entirely new category: “Inlayered Mineral Surface” based on its Inlayr® design technology.
Éclos® combines superior physical and mechanical performance, a 3D integrated design and a crystalline silica-free composition, while incorporating more than 50% recycled materials. This innovation reinforces Cosentino's commitment to sustainability and fabricator safety.
“Since our founding, we have been committed to leading innovation rather than following trends; just as we did with Dekton® and most recently with Hybriq+® technology for Silestone®. Éclos® involves a new turning point for our industry, an evolution that responds to real market needs and anticipates the future”, says Pilar Cosentino, Cosentino Group CEO.
Like Silestone® in 1990 and Dekton® in 2013, Éclos® represents a breakthrough in the evolution of surfaces for architecture and design. Its development, which involved 50 specialised researchers in different areas, required more than 28,000 hours of research and more than 1,500 hours of testing from the company’s Research & Development and Product departments.
Inlayr® technology enables Éclos® to be manufactured using a layered design system. Thanks to an advanced robotics engineering process and innovative decoration techniques, it gives the entire surface a 3D design with unique veins and patterns, and unprecedented depth and consistency. The result is a surface with a three-dimensional design integrated into the edges, with realistic aesthetics and a natural touch and feel that redefine industry standards.
Éclos® also introduces a groundbreaking development in the composition of mineral surfaces. The first collection, which will be available globally in the coming months, has zero crystalline silica in its formulation. Furthermore, all colours use a minimum of 50% recycled materials, while several colours incorporate almost 90% recycled materials, demonstrating Cosentino's dedication to the circular economy.
It’s composition, and the formulation developed specifically for this new product, gives Éclos® better flexibility, ductility and impact resistance, making it easier for fabricator and industry professionals to handle and install.
Additionally, through Inlayr® technology, Éclos® offers superior heat resistance that can withstand temperatures up to 220°C including direct contact with cookware immediately after use, making it an ideal solution for kitchen countertops both commercially and at home.
In a context determined by protectionist policies, tariff disputes and growing concerns about the safety of materials like quartz, Cosentino is once again leading the path with Éclos®. This new surface category seeks to transform the sector and offers a safe, sustainable, beautiful design, and high added value alternative.
According to recent reports, the global countertop market will grow at a rate of 3% annually until 2028, reaching $50 billion and 650 million square meters, of which 100 million square meters will be mineral and porcelanic surfaces. The US will remain the largest market, while the largest growth is expected in Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, and developing countries.

It works together with its clients and partners to provide with solutions that offer design and value, and inspire the life of many people. I have only been with the business for seven months, after a career in the KBB sector, during which I had long admired C.P. Hart. What has surprised me most is the level of innovation and care within the company. Despite its well-deserved reputation as a leader in the luxury bathroom sector, I was amazed to see how focused the team is on the customer experience and the smallest details that ensure perfection in every completed bathroom, whether in a client’s home or on one of our trade partners’ large-scale projects.
In recent years, we’ve seen a shift away from the minimalist, white, clinical-style bathrooms that dominated much of the early 2000s. Instead, our clients are increasingly drawn to more colourful, characterful spaces that reflect the opulence of earlier design eras such as the Art Deco period and the glamour of the 1970s.
There’s a growing appetite for bathrooms with colour, texture, pattern, and depth, now shifting to spaces that feel rich and layered through the clever use of materials. Alongside this, spa-inspired bathrooms are becoming hugely popular. What was once the preserve of luxury hotels is now far more attainable at home, with innovations in home saunas, steam, and wellness-led design.
Another key trend is the introduction of nature into the bathroom. Clients are looking to bring the outdoors in through organic textures, natural finishes, and earthy tones. Tiles play an essential role in this transformation, and with hundreds of ranges to choose from, they allow us to create highly personalised schemes tailored to each client’s vision.
We anticipate the year ahead will continue the move toward more expressive, personalised interiors. Clients are becoming bolder, stepping away from uniform, neutral schemes and instead embracing colour, pattern, and layered textures that tell a story and create a sense of individuality. Our clients want their bathrooms to be an extension of their home.
Wellness-focused design will also continue grow, with interiors, particularly bathrooms, being seen as restorative spaces for relaxation and self-care. The integration of spa-like features, natural elements will only increase.
Technology will also play an important role, from smart lighting and water-saving solutions to innovations that make luxury features more accessible.
While we always remain discreet about our clientele, it’s continually a pleasure to encounter some of the major celebrities who trust us with their homes. Similarly, there are significant developers bringing exceptional, large-scale projects to life across the Capital. Even after several decades in the industry, I’m still excited by the opportunity to source exclusive products for our customers and to make a real difference in someone’s home.
Being an SBID Accredited Industry Partner is a real mark of trust and credibility for us. It reflects our commitment to excellence, professionalism, and innovation within the design community. For our clients, it provides reassurance that they are working with a company that upholds the highest standards and is aligned with a globally recognised authority in interior design.
It also allows us to stay closely connected to the wider design industry – sharing knowledge, supporting best practice, and contributing to the future of interior design. Most importantly, it strengthens our ability to collaborate with designers, architects, and specifiers, ensuring we can provide the best possible expertise, products, and support for their projects. We are a relationship based business, and interior design is fundamental cornerstone for us – it’s the creativity that we thrive on.

In contemporary home design, kitchens are more than places to cook, they are social hubs, open living spaces, and architectural focal points. Yet with this new visibility comes a challenge: how to balance elegant entertaining with the inevitable mess of food preparation. Enter the Dirty Kitchen; a modern revival of the scullery that is transforming the way we live, cook and host.
Historically, the scullery was a service space hidden from view, used for dishwashing, pot-scrubbing and food prep. Today’s Dirty Kitchen retains its practical purpose but elevates it into a design-led feature. No longer a neglected backroom, it is conceived as an intelligent extension of the main kitchen, seamlessly integrated with the home’s architecture.
Behind sliding pocket doors or discreet partitions, these second kitchens house the heavy-duty appliances, deep sinks and generous storage needed for modern entertaining. From extra ovens and dishwashers to bulky mixers and chest freezers, the functional elements of culinary life are tucked neatly away, allowing the front-of-house kitchen to remain pristine and composed.
The renewed popularity of the Dirty Kitchen is driven by lifestyle. Today’s kitchens are rarely used for cooking alone, they are living, working and entertaining spaces. A support kitchen makes it possible to maintain calm, clutter-free interiors while still preparing food for family dinners or large gatherings.
Architecturally, this approach solves one of the great challenges of open-plan design: how to reconcile generous social space with the storage and functionality a working kitchen demands. By relocating bulk preparation and cleaning tasks, the Dirty Kitchen ensures that open spaces remain visually serene while still performing at a professional level.
The success of a Dirty Kitchen lies in thoughtful planning. Appliance capacity is often the first consideration; a second oven, dishwasher, prep sink or oversized fridge can take the pressure off the main kitchen, freeing it up for more social and aesthetic functions. Storage, too, is key. Floor-to-ceiling cabinetry makes the most of every inch, with open sections for trays, pans and bulk provisions. Far from being purely utilitarian, these elements can be designed with elegance in mind to introduce both practicality and architectural presence.
Lighting should be treated with the same care as in the main kitchen. Good task lighting ensures efficiency, while under-shelf LEDs or even a statement pendant bring atmosphere and design intent to the space. Integrated motion sensors can add both convenience and a sense of theatre, making the room feel active and alive as soon as you step inside. Finally, flexibility is what sets the Dirty Kitchen apart. It can be conceived as a pantry, a dedicated wine store, a laundry zone or even a coffee bar – a multi-functional room shaped precisely to the rhythm of each household.
Every household uses its kitchen differently, and a Dirty Kitchen should be tailored to these individual needs. At Roundhouse, we have designed everything from compact concealed larders to expansive walk-in preparation rooms with chef-grade equipment. The goal is always the same: to let the main kitchen breathe, maintaining its architectural presence while ensuring no functionality is sacrificed.
The Dirty Kitchen may be rooted in tradition, but its design language is entirely modern. Crafted with the same level of detail and material quality as the main kitchen, it feels like a natural extension of the home.
A second kitchen is no longer a luxury reserved for grand houses, it is increasingly the hallmark of considered, contemporary living. The Dirty Kitchen represents a quiet revolution: a space that liberates the main kitchen, enhances entertaining, and brings style and efficiency into perfect alignment.
