What has been your most significant company highlight or success from the past year?

This year, we celebrated a major milestone - our 45th anniversary! It's an incredible achievement that we're absolutely thrilled about. One of the highlights of the past year was the complete refurbishment of our Chelsea showroom. We transformed all four floors, introducing exciting new features like the Studio concept, which focuses on colour, texture, and finishes. We had the pleasure of collaborating with renowned interior designers, Barlow and Barlow, who designed four unique displays. These displays showcased eclectic schemes with a classic contemporary twist, incorporating vibrant colours and playful patterns. But that's not all. We have even more excitement as we are currently in the process of refurbishing our extensive Battersea showroom, set to be completed by the end of 2023. Keep your eyes peeled for the incredible transformation!

What are the latest trends you’ve noticed in your client’s requests?

We don’t believe nor follow trends per se, they come and go. However, we have noticed an increase in clients embracing colour, patterns, and various textures in their designs. This shift could have been influenced by advancements in technology and the growing popularity of our Wall&Deco WET SYSTEM wallpaper, which can be directly applied in shower areas. We have also observed a rising demand for wellness-focused features. Clients are now seeking steam generators for walk-in showers, along with shower benches to enhance relaxation. Our Sunshower has also gained popularity, as it combines the benefits of sunlight during showering by utilising warming Infrared and carefully controlled UV light. It's a fantastic option for those who crave the feeling of the sun. We remain committed to offering innovative solutions that cater to our clients' evolving desires and needs whether they are trendy or timeless.

How do you see the interior design industry evolving in the year ahead?

Looking ahead, we suspect sustainability and wellness will be the focus of the coming year. As people become increasingly conscious of our planet and environmental impact, they will seek out environmentally friendly options for their bathroom. The concept of at-home spa bathrooms is continuously evolving, especially after the pandemic, with a growing array of products designed to create the ultimate sanctuary at home, so it is definitely something to look out for in the upcoming future.

Is there anything new you are excited to be working on?

We are constantly working on lots of exciting projects, but one that our contracts department are very excited to be working on is the iconic Whiteley London Development where we are proud to be doing both the hotel and residences.

A built-in Miele oven and steamer were chosen in an elegant Obsidian black finish for the display to further enhance the worktops' beauty and the cabinetry's finish. The display cabinetry features integrated CopatLife LED lighting technology which is complemented by an intelligent Novy Wall light system under the wall cabinetry that allows the user to easily control the lighting tone and on/off switch through Novy’s Gesture Control technology. In addition, a slim rectangular LED light source over the peninsula creates interest and provides a focal point for a dedicated food preparation task area.

Exclusive to CopatLife is their distinctive ‘Island Block’ unit which features base cabinets that can be contrasted with a range of finishes on the plinth with a raised side and back panel. The unit’s worktop features integrated cooking burners and a sink – ideal for open-plan kitchen-living as a stand-alone kitchen or with wall and tall units. An alternative to hiding kitchen appliances in a walk-larder space is to include CopatLife’s open lateral side system that can be hidden away and accessed behind a side cabinet panel door.

London’s Carnaby Street is famous worldwide as home to Britain’s most iconic names in fashion and popular culture, so when progressive fashion brand RIXO paired up with Karndean Designflooring to design its latest store the result was always going to be effortlessly stylish and elegant.

One of the coolest destinations associated with 1960s London, Carnaby was, and still remains, the epicentre of culture and lifestyle, from ground-breaking fashion brands such as Mary Quant, Vivienne Westwood and Cranks vegetarian restaurant to underground music bars which hosted future stars including The Who and The Rolling Stones.

Rixo Carnaby Street
Rixo Carnaby Street

RIXO’s desirable vintage inspired one-off pieces pay homage to these trailblazing pioneers with a look that’s in vogue yet also a future classic. Designed to be easy-to-wear and inclusive, each item features a fusion of original hand-painted prints and flattering silhouettes to inspire confidence.

Following several pop-up stores in the area, RIXO’s new Carnaby Street store offers a welcoming environment and the tailored experience today’s discerning customers are looking for. Committed to sustainability and an ethical supply chain, RIXO opted to work with local design studio Cúpla and Karndean, a family run British brand now celebrating its 50th anniversary in the flooring industry.

Gemma Munday, retail growth manager at RIXO, said: “We like every store to be highly individual. As our clothing designs are inspired by vintage fashions, so all our stores have unique artwork and fixtures that tell its own story. The aim for our Carnaby Street store was to create a grown-up feel with an empowering interior that would reflect our vintage inspiration yet also allow the personality of our clothes to shine. We looked for luxury fixtures that would give us a high end finish and a bespoke yet understated look.”

Rixo Carnaby Street

The store beautifully captures the atmospheric glamour of the 1960s and 70s and combines this with contemporary trends and an eye for detail. A calming pared back palette of cool off-white is contrasted against rich deep blues and warm wood design panelling and flooring.

Pearl Oak from Karndean’s LooseLay Longboard range balances the boutique’s light and dark tones, reflecting both traditional timber flooring and the modern preference for light neutral tones. The extra-long planks have been laid at an angle for a sense of flow that can guide customers around the store.

The brand’s vintage inspiration is reflected in a bespoke circular statement chandelier, which sits above a white marble table and a rug in RIXO’s signature leopard print. Completing the sophisticated look are unobtrusive brass display rails which set off the colourful clothing to perfection.

Fleur Carson, commercial sales director at Karndean Designflooring, said: “Experience is of the upmost importance when it comes to retail, particularly at the high end of the market. In light of the disruption of the pandemic and today’s economic challenges, resilient brands are adapting to offer consumers a personalised service. A comfortable instore environment is key to encouraging customers back into the physical store, with a natural feel and durable materials that can cope with high traffic.

The timeless design and light organic tones of the Pearl Oak flooring creates a clean backdrop, allowing all attention to be focused on the clothing displays. Designed to authentically replicate the beauty of European oak, Pearl Oak features light pinky-beige tones, distressed grain details and a lightly brushed surface texture. The loose lay format is a highly practical choice for retail premises with a durable, quiet and scratch resistant surface. Should damage occur it’s quick and easy to make repairs by simply lifting and replacing individual planks as required.”

Rixo Carnaby Street

Gemma Munday added: “We had previously chosen Pearl Oak for our head office so we knew that this would be a great choice. It’s really hard wearing and the pre-attached acoustic layer significantly reduces noise. The floor is a beautiful addition to the fixtures and furnishings and pulls all the different elements together. We want everyone to feel welcome, even including dogs, so the fact that Karndean flooring is durable enough for pets was an extra attraction!”

Following a period of rapid growth, consumer engagement platform Braze has recently moved into the City of London’s Broadgate Exchange Square. Outgrowing their presence at a nearby shared co-working facility, the company wanted their new dedicated facilities to be an employee attraction tool, whilst also being as ‘future-ready’ as possible. Making the workspace desirable and enjoyable was an important consideration for the company, who exercise a fully agile, hybrid working policy.

Braze Office

The design intent and space plan of the new office was undertaken by AIS Interiors, with the furniture dealer by Bailey (now Insidesource) procuring and installing the furniture. To support worker wellbeing and meet employee expectations, all workstations across the floor are sit-stand. These 258 workstations greatly outnumber current employee numbers, but are in place in anticipation of further, rapid expansion.

Banks of desks are punctuated with large collaboration tables to provide alternative work settings adjacent to workstations. Should the company expand yet further beyond the current provisions, these collaboration tables have been configured in dimensions exactly equivalent to 6-person benches, allowing rapid switching out whilst causing minimal disruption.

Braze Office

The 258 KI Work2.1 Sit-Stand desk workstations have been configured with ‘E Series’ screens finished with Camira Sumi Yabu SUR20, Camira Sumi Handa SUR10 & Camira Sumi Daisen SUR09, and a white beading. These fabrics were especially selected to suit other furniture in each respective neighbourhood but are not usually used for screens as they have a weave. When stretched over screens, this weave can often look warped or distorted, however the KI factory managed to create an elegant and seamless finish for this bespoke request.

Braze Office

Generally arranged as groups of 6, many of these workstations feature a fixed-height ‘D’ end table that creates collaboration space and prevents people needing to squeeze in-between desks for impromptu gatherings. These tables blend into the workstation configuration but are in fact freestanding so can be moved to create finger safety gaps next to the desks, or even removed if necessary.

The KI Work2.1 Sit-Stand desks were chosen for their advanced cable management system. The clever design of the lower cable tray of this system makes cable distribution easier and totally hidden between desks, whilst reducing the size and number of floor grommets required.

Braze Office

The large floorplate uses furniture, screens, and planting to delineate space, whilst shelving has been avoided to reduce the accumulation of visible clutter over time. Arranged into neighbourhoods, the office features mostly neutral colours.

The colours used on desk screens blend into their adjacent breakout areas, and bolder colours have been used in spaces furnished with high tables and soft seating that provide informal meeting spaces within the open plan. There are numerous standalone pods and booths, as well as traditional meeting rooms to provide a rich variety of work space types to suit different people and functions.

JJ Bailey, Business Development Director at Insidesource, commented, “We’ve worked with KI on many projects and their service is always of an excellent standard and their products are of the highest quality. The Work2.1 Sit-Stand desk is no exception.”

About KI

KI’s furniture helps the world’s leading organisations create happy, healthy, high performing working and learning environments for their people. Bringing together good design, advanced engineering and sustainable resources, KI’s products are durable, flexible and offer excellent value.

Gaggenau, the luxury brand for professional-grade home appliances, is once again immersing itself in the London Festival of Architecture 2023.

As part of the month-long celebration of architecture, Gaggenau London is showcasing a specially commissioned installation, TIME by Raphaé Memon and Sikander Pervez. It will be on display in the showroom window until 30 June 2023.

TIME by Raphaé Memon and Sikander Pervez.

TIME is a series of handmade clocks, stacked vertically, designed to encourage us to explore our complex relationship with time. It was created by architect and stage designer Raphaé Memon and Sikander Pervez, a visual artist working in sculpture and installation. The duo’s brief for the installation was to use materials produced as a by-product of Gaggenau’s manufacturing process. As a result, the clocks are cast in plaster to be as close to zero-waste as possible.

TIME by Raphaé Memon and Sikander Pervez.

“We were inspired by Gaggenau’s focus on hand craftsmanship, heritage and sustainability,” says Sikander Pervez. “A commonality found throughout is time. For example, the time it takes to consider lifestyles around which the appliances are designed. Everything at Gaggenau is manufactured precisely to ensure a minimal amount of waste is produced, so the consumer shares the maximum amount of time with appliances that are built to last.”

TIME by Raphaé Memon and Sikander Pervez.
TIME by Raphaé Memon and Sikander Pervez.

Each clock relates to a global time zone, including cities with Gaggenau showrooms, places that are personal to the designers and those who work at Gaggenau London, as well as countries that are most vulnerable to climate change. “The clocks have been handmade and signed as an edition of 200, with the aim that their life will continue beyond the installation in people’s homes,” adds Raphaé Memon. “They will therefore extend their time as functional objects, in keeping with the global conversation surrounding sustainability.”

TIME by Raphaé Memon and Sikander Pervez.

Edina Crnkic, Gaggenau Group Brand Marketing Manager, said: “We are excited to work with Raphaé and Sikander to showcase this intriguing and very beautiful work. It chimes perfectly with Gaggenau’s values in terms of craftsmanship and sustainability and I’m sure it will spark many conversations.”

Gaggenau window at London Festival of Architecture 2023

Gaggenau London is situated at 40 Wigmore Street and visitors will be able to enjoy the TIME installation throughout London Festival of Architecture (1-30 June 2023).

Any visitor who would like to take a clock home should register their interest at the showroom. The clocks will then be given out on a first-come, first-served basis at 10am on 1 July 2023.

Promoting independence and wellbeing in later life, the UK’s market leader in vinyl flooring, Karndean Designflooring, has partnered with retirement living specialist, Inspired Villages, to provide a high quality experience and the ideal solution for a healthy retirement.

Elderswell in Bedfordshire, the latest development in Inspired Villages’ portfolio which opened in November 2022 and will include 156 homes, demonstrates how an inclusive approach and a comfortable environment with a premium finish can transform the retirement experience.

Designed for independent living and following design principles for hospitality venues rather than more clinical settings, Elderswell’s new Village Centre delivers on the philosophy that quality of life should flourish as we get older with a focus on community and an active lifestyle.

Specifying Karndean flooring throughout the Village Centre as well as in the kitchens of each residential unit not only provides an authentic natural look and homely atmosphere but also meets all the technical specifications of a demanding commercial setting.

Fleur Carson, commercial sales director at Karndean Designflooring, said: “A concept that is still in its infancy here in the UK, retirement villages offer a home from home experience that focuses on lifestyle rather than care, where older people can enjoy the best years of their lives.

Materials that are attractive yet easy to maintain are key to providing desirable living spaces that are suitable for the needs of older residents. Each of our flooring designs has been inspired by samples of natural wood and stone from around the world. An authentic representation of each material is then combined with the latest technology to develop a high-quality luxury vinyl flooring with the versatility to create imaginative interiors."

Sonia Parol, design director at Inspired Villages, said: “Our objective is to build vibrant communities with the facilities that actively retired people want, such as restaurants, bars, wellbeing facilities such as gym, studio and swimming pool and hairdressers. These facilities are also open to the general public and this creates strong inclusive links to the local community. We understand the mental health benefits our residents gain from being involved and engaged in their community. This is why we design and deliver villages that offer our residents many opportunities for engagement in cultural and physical activities, ensuring the pursuit of their hobbies and passions."

Karndean Designflooring

Set in the scenic Bedfordshire countryside, Elderswell is a rural retreat with convenient access to the local towns. When it came to the interior, Manchester based design consultant SpaceInvader was inspired by the development’s natural locality to create a timelessly elegant space with an organic style and earthy colour palette.

True to its ethos of quality and practicality, Inspired Villages stipulates a consistent approach to interior design whereby 80% of its specifications are standardized and 20% contextual with furniture, art and other elements that reflect each unique locality.

Fleur Carson said: “In commercial projects such as these it is important that materials can meet requirements for standardization to support easy installation and help meet deadlines but also offer the versatility designers need to create spaces that are welcoming and inspiring. Our flooring ranges provide just this: a reliable quality and specification as well as a wide choice of authentic wood and stone designs that can be used to create bespoke interiors.”

In the Village Centre restaurant, a honey oak design flooring has been used to introduce natural textures and warm tones to the soft colour palette of grey, beige and green. Choosing Golden Brushed Oak herringbone from the Van Gogh dual format range, an attractive European oak design with a delicate balance of long straight grain and beautiful ‘flowery’ grain, has resulted in a floor that oozes authentic charm and adds interest with a sense of movement.

In the wellbeing facilities, Bleached Tasmanian Oak from the Karndean LooseLay Longboard range brings a clean contemporary feel appropriate to its active setting. The design’s loose lay format, which features an enhanced acoustic layer, comes with all the practical benefits of Karndean flooring but also serves to reduce noise transfer by 13dB. Held in place with a combination of weight and Karndean’s K-Wave grip backing, ongoing maintenance and repairs are straight forward as damaged planks can be simply lifted and replaced.

Sonia Parol said: “We use Karndean flooring across all our new villages. While each village has its own unique character and features different flooring designs, we know that Karndean will give us the variety of style and finish we are looking for alongside standardized technical specifications, durability and low maintenance.”

In the creation process of the art pieces, Lalique and its artist collaborators work hand in hand. The artists work closely with the artisans at Lalique’s sole factory in Alsace and with the Paris creative team headed by Lalique artistic and creative director, Marc Larminaux.  Founded in 1888, Lalique has a history of artistic tradition and collaboration and celebrated 100 years of its factory in Alsace last year.

Frederick Fischer, UK managing director said, “We are delighted Lalique has chosen London to launch its first Art Gallery – the only space dedicated solely to Lalique Art and the first in the world of its kind. It is a space we can focus on Lalique Art in all its forms, creating custom curations that will be complementary to our boutiques that specialize in Lalique decorative items, furniture, jewellery and perfumes.”

Burlington Arcade’s Head Beadle Mark Lord commented: “We are honored to have been the home of Lalique’s UK boutique for six years, and we are excited to welcome Lalique’s first Art Gallery in the world to our historic retail destination. We look forward to continuing to be a part of the Maison’s history.”

In addition to three London boutiques, Lalique has two other UK boutiques - at Bicester Village and in the heart of The Glenturret Whisky Distillery in Scotland, which is also home to The Glenturret Lalique Restaurant, awarded a Michelin star just seven months after opening in July 2021.
