Sustainable Swedish design company, Bolon, has expanded its long-standing and best-selling collections, Artisan and Botanic, with new colourways, which were unveiled at the brand’s Clerkenwell showroom for London Design Festival.

Inspired by traditional craftsmanship, yet produced using innovative fibres, Artisan is a fusion of old and new. Designed for high-traffic areas, such as offices and hospitality spaces, the collection has been selected for use in a diverse range of projects, both in the UK and internationally.

Bolon has now expanded the collection with ten new dynamic and lively colourways, that complement the existing collection’s vibrant and expressive energy and add to the brand’s portfolio.

Bolon Botanic: Blanche, Rain, Library, Tilia tiles

The Artisan collection

Play is a summery and vivid orange that looks stunning on a larger scale. Love is an intensely warm red. Alive and happy, it is bursting with energy. Fresh is a cool, almost transparent green that appears new and thrilling when paired with natural tones. A deep green, Wild, has the capacity to soften other hues. The one-of-a-kind, yellow toned green shade, Spring, shines and brings other colours to life. True is a noble blue that complements the red options within the Artisan collection. Water is a brave colour that appears youthful and energising. Ink is a deep blue, nearly black tone, that appears neither sharp nor silky when combined with other colours. A powerful and assured black, Noir, can stand alone or be styled with neutrals or brights. The collection is completed with Chalky, a shade between beige and grey, that is nearly white with a feather-like sensation.

Bolon Artisan: Play

Inspired by the natural world, the Botanic collection consists of a varied range of soft, warm and intelligent tones. Having proved popular since its launch, Bolon has now expanded the collection’s colour palette with eight new shades that transcend what first meets the eye.

Bolon Botanic Blanche: Canyon, Honey, Vintage, Spearmint, Chestnut tiles

The Botanic collection

Blanche is creamy and mild and brings a sophisticated softness that belongs to a new kind of luxury. Caramel and golden, Honey, is thoughtful with a natural warmth. It is a new type of beige with its own identity. Rich and dreamy, Chestnut is an intriguing kind of brown and an elegant evolution of colour. Inspired by the desert, Canyon is a heated terracotta. The reddish-brown tone adds timelessness to any room. Attractive and compelling, Vintage is both soft and dark and is the colour of the full moon. Rain is a refined blue tone with a hint of purple, which reflects how rainwater can shimmer. Fresh and nourishing, Spearmint, is a brightening colour, which can work like a white tone, as it contrasts and enhances. Library is supreme and luxurious. Just as the name suggests, it is a classic green.

Throughout LDF, the new Artisan and Botanic colour palettes were displayed at Bolon’s Clerkenwell showroom, as part of a collaborative installation of furniture, flooring and lighting, created in partnership with Moooi.

Cathrine Ahlenius, Head of Research and Design at Bolon commented, “Artisan and Botanic each have their own identity. Artisan is a lively and expressive collection and the Botanic range is soft and warm with intelligent tones. We want to highlight those characteristics with new colours that provide more combination possibilities, both within the collections and with other items in Bolon’s product portfolio.”

Bolon Circle, Ivory, Garnet, Quartz
Bolon Artisan: Chalky, Play, Water, Wild, True

Sarah Herman, Marketing Director at Bolon UK, added, “We are delighted to introduce the new colourways for these popular collections.”

Headquartered in Sweden but globally renowned, Bolon is passionate about sustainability which is woven into the brand’s DNA. Botanic is made in Sweden, only with renewable energy and using a mixture of recycled and new material. The designs are available in roll, 50x50cm tiles and as Bolon Studio tiles.

The UK’s market leader in luxury vinyl flooring, Karndean Designflooring, is giving designers greater flexibility to create engaging industrial interiors with the introduction of concrete design flooring in an extra-large tile size.

From 27th September, its popular LooseLay range will include three concrete designs in a larger 1000mm x 1000mm tile format, offering the ability to create an on-trend streamlined look quickly and with less environmental impact. A realistic alternative to poured and polished concrete, Karndean’s LooseLay range is designed to not only meet but exceed expectations in commercial spaces.

Expected to find favour in settings such as retail, hospitality and public sector spaces, the new tile size is ideal for laying in a grid pattern to create minimalist clean lines and an unbroken effect.

Karndean’s LooseLay flooring is designed to be easy to install, featuring a K-Wave friction grip backing that creates a strong bond to the subfloor using a combination of weight and friction. With just tackifier required in high traffic areas and at thresholds, Karndean’s water based tackifier offers twice as much coverage than standard adhesive which supports less waste and overall lowers the impact on the environment.

Rather than having to replace the entire floor in the event of damage, each tile or plank can be lifted individually, making it the perfect option for high footfall spaces. This also allows for simple access to underfloor services as required or for flooring to be reused in another setting.

With a subtle emboss and matt finish, the creamy-grey tones of Quebec, complex grey shades of Colorado and gunmetal grey mottled effect of Vermont offer a look that’s reminiscent of a concrete floor but without the cost or inconvenience. Unlike the real thing, these designs can be combined to incorporate effective wayfinding and zoning.

Fleur Carson, commercial sales director at Karndean Designflooring, said: “It’s easy to see why concrete flooring is a timeless choice when looking for a modern backdrop and industrial finish in commercial spaces. Providing a neutral grey background, our concrete designs look fantastic in conjunction with either the clean lines of a fresh white interior or with the calming earthy tones of a biophilic scheme. By adding resimercial elements, designers can create inspirational spaces which will enhance health and wellbeing.

“We see it as our responsibility to create the best arrangement of functional tones and textures with the lowest possible environmental impact. Our new 1000mm x 1000mm tiles are designed to offer outstanding aesthetic and technical performance and so enable the installation of a stunning floor quickly but without compromising on practicality. Designers can be confident that our flooring will provide a neutral canvas and perfect complement to lighting, furniture and other design elements as well as help meet sustainability targets.”

Karndean’s LooseLay flooring absorbs the impact of noise with strong acoustic credentials. An incorporated acoustic layer effectively reduces noise transfer to the floor below by 13dB and, for additional protection, tiles can be installed over Versilay InstaShield to achieve impact sound reduction of 17dB.

Naturally warmer and softer underfoot than concrete, Karndean flooring is also compatible with underfloor heating systems and is easier to keep hygienically clean, requiring no resealing or resurfacing.

Three distinct furniture styles, seventeen colour choices, three vanity basins and two brassware styles make the new Root range by VitrA one of the most flexible and customisable collections on the market.

Root is a complete bathroom solution with furniture, basins, taps, showers and storage units all within the range. With three different design options as well as various textures, colours and sizes, Root allows for a truly personalised bathroom experience.

Root furniture is available in a choice of three different designs: flat, groove and classic. Flat – a simple style for those with a minimalist taste; Groove – a contemporary option with a panelled style; and Classic – a modern take on shaker design.

Interior designers can choose from seventeen assorted colours, including retro green, dark blue, pearl grey and walnut in three types of finish – gloss, matt, or wood. The matt colours have a PVC finish which is highly durable with a water absorption rate of 0.5%. The gloss and wood colours have a PET finish which is a sustainable material produced by 100% recycled plastic and is both heat and moisture resistant.

Handle options include matt black, chrome and matt white, with two distinct styles to suit the different furniture designs.

A choice of three washbasins – Integra, Integra Classic and Zentrum – provide further flexibility. Integra washbasins have a deep basin with flat edges, Integra Classic has a short upstand at the back, creating a more traditional look, and Zentrum basins have a more geometrical outer with a rounded internal basin shape.

The brassware is available in two styles, Root Round and Root Square, and in five colours, chrome, brushed nickel, copper, matt black and gold, across the array of basin, bath, and shower mixers.

To help designers in their bathroom design journey, VitrA has developed the Root Configurator. This online tool allows users to experiment with the various styles, colour finishes and sizes to find the perfect bathroom design. In addition to the washbasin units, the tool includes the taps and additional storage units available to enable users to design their whole bathroom space.

What are the origins of your brand?

The company was originally founded in Stockholm in 1949, by Nils Erik Eklund, who came up with the idea of recycling textile offcuts into woven rag rugs. In many ways, our founder was ahead of his time and his ability to see an opportunity where others couldn’t still inspires us. Today, his granddaughters Annica and Marie keep this same spirit alive but since they took over the company from their parents Lars and Monica in 2003, they have also been on a mission – to make Bolon a design-led innovator and fuse the conservative, traditional flooring industry with the boundless creativity of the world of fashion. Under their leadership, business has transformed from a traditional weaving mill into an international design brand with clients such as Armani, Google, Four Seasons Hotels, Chanel, Adidas, Apple and Missoni Home and we’ve collaborated with world-renowned designers and architects. We are proud of our progress, but our story continues – we want to keep moving forward and innovating, creating sustainable, world leading flooring and rug solutions.

How do you work with interior designers?

We have a team of people, both in the UK and internationally, who work closely with interior designers to keep them abreast of our new products. We aim to offer the best service possible every step of the way, including quick and efficient technical, design and sample support.

What value does your sector add to the interior design industry?

Innovation, inspiration and unique flooring and rug products.

How do your services/offering enhance an interior designer’s projects?

Bolon creates beautiful flooring and rugs that stay looking that way, even after years of use. Our multiple custom options mean that there is a unique solution for each project a designer is working on, depending on the requirements of the client.

What are the latest trends you’ve noticed in your client’s requests?

Sustainability is a big part of our DNA and we are proud of our impressive sustainability credentials. We have noticed that these are of increasing interest to all interior designers, and we’re thrilled that this has become such an important part of how designers work.  It is also essential that our flooring and rugs are long lasting, so the cleanability of our flooring is also of increasing interest. Designers and their clients need flooring and rugs that are practical, as well as beautiful. People have had bad experiences with flooring that is not cleanable and therefore looks tired quickly after very little use, so they love how easy our flooring is to clean.

We’ve also noticed a number of requests for rugs that can be used both inside and outdoors.

The UK’s market leader in luxury vinyl flooring Karndean Designflooring is on a mission to change the way people think about flooring with its new Clerkenwell showroom.

Situated at 20 Clerkenwell Green, in the heart of London’s vibrant design district, the new studio is designed to inspire the design community and highlight the endless possibilities of flooring design. The showroom features a beautiful selection of bespoke floors that demonstrate how Karndean flooring can meet both aesthetic requirements and demanding technical specifications, whilst also protecting a listed period building.

Inspired by a concept of ‘random chaos’ to instill a sense of happiness and optimism, the showroom features abstract designs that highlight the outstanding versatility of luxury vinyl flooring. Architects and designers will be able to discover imaginative floors that push the boundaries of style whilst effectively protecting and enhancing the building’s original features.

Fleur Carson, commercial sales director at Karndean Designflooring, said: “As a brand we have been expanding steadily and continue to make our mark on the commercial interiors industry, so this investment is the obvious next step for us. Having a permanent showroom in Clerkenwell will make us more accessible to those working at the cutting edge of design and will enable us to show how an extremely modern floor can fit into a historic setting.

“We have designed the showroom to exemplify both the potential of our products and how expressive design can be used to influence mood. Using both off the shelf examples and a bespoke design, we offer a selection of original floor designs that will raise a smile, support wellbeing and connect us to the natural world.”

To support its ongoing mission to create inspiring places to work, meet or play, the showroom presents creative floor designs that respect the building’s legacy whilst securing the original floor underneath. On the ground level, visitors can experience how a complementary combination of designs from our Heritage Collection and bespoke cuts can be used to demarcate activity zones and guide users through the space. By using a rigid core format in the basement, the design ensures that the existing floor is completely protected.

On the first floor, a floating sub-floor safeguards the floorboards so that a unique abstract design can be laid, illustrating the full potential of Karndean flooring. Here, designers can learn how design components and bespoke elements in interesting patterns and colour combinations can be used to create truly innovative designs that reflect individuality and enrich the user experience.

The new showroom will be open by appointment. Visitors will be able to explore the flexibility of Karndean flooring, meet with dedicated commercial specification managers and attend events and continuing professional development seminars (CPDs).

The UK’s market leader in luxury vinyl flooring Karndean Designflooring is expanding its popular Knight Tile range with a collection of contemporary wood and stone designs, including herringbone and a unique chevron effect.

Washed Character Oak - Aged Living

The new range

Expanding its range of mid and light toned wood and stone designs, the new Knight Tile collection has been designed to complement the latest colour trends, from monochrome and neutrals to bold, bright palettes. Whether using a single design for a barely there streamlined look or combining full sized and herringbone planks for a bespoke style, the subtle features of these designs will bring a classical elegance to any interior.

From the cool greys of Ivory Riven Slate and Smoked Concrete to the neutral tones of Lime Washed Oak and the reclaimed rustic charm of Washed Character Oak, this stunning new collection is expected to find favour in a range of sectors.

Glacial Marble, Midnight Marble - Cameo
Dove Grey Concrete - Bar

Key features and application

Designers working on co-living developments such as new build, housebuild and student accommodation will appreciate the option to choose a single design in a combination of gluedown and rigid core formats to create a clean sophisticated look throughout the home, including the ability to introduce an on-trend chevron pattern.

With realistic features and textures of natural materials but also a practical hygienic surface and good slip resistance, the collection offers a streamlined yet traditional look that will suit retirement and supported living accommodation. For areas where a visual differentiation is required, designers will find ample possibilities for interesting tonal combinations as well as laying pattern options.

In commercial spaces such as hospitality, boutique hotels and offices, this collection offers the flexibility to express a brand’s personality and allows plenty of scope for creative zoning. The wide choice of designs in a rigid core option, including herringbone, will allow highly individualised designs to be created with minimum disruption.

Smoked Concrete - Student Space

Design specification

The new Knight Tile range presents 10 new wood and 12 new stone designs, with options available in gluedown and rigid core formats, and six herringbone (18” x 3”) designs. In addition, the collection introduces a rigid core format to 10 popular existing designs.

Designers looking to create distinctive and playful floors will appreciate the introduction of a chevron design in a choice of three colourways; Lime Washed Oak, Grey Washed Oak and Rose Washed Oak. Reproducing an iconic chevron pattern in a convenient larger sized plank (48″ x 9″) with a smooth emboss, this is the perfect choice for projects where installation time is key. Designers can choose from a gluedown format or rigid core to suit uneven subfloor conditions or where sound transmission is a consideration.

Our popular Rose Washed Oak design, for example, is now available in five format and plank size options including our new chevron effect.

Dove Grey Concrete - Bar

“Our latest designs have been influenced by our recent experiences and aim to support wellbeing and a sense of belonging with a natural look that connect our interiors to the outside environment. While intended to offer a stylish palette of pale greys and taupes that  will act as a subtle background to the latest interior trends and bold colour choices, this collection doesn’t skimp on character or authentic details.”

Washed Character Oak - Aged Living
Glacial Marble - Commercial Cameo

Like all Karndean floors, the new collection has been handcrafted for an authentic look and produced with cutting-edge technology for a beautiful yet practical floor that will facilitate cleaning and maintenance, reduce noise disturbance and protect indoor air quality.

Our ethos and style of the brand at Riviera is all about function, suitability, sustainability, inspiration, fashion, and exclusivity. Our products include innovative flat woven collections, tufted wool loops in solid dyed and heather blends along with blended fibres such as Tencel and Bamboo. Our carpets and rugs are textured using plain, natural colour shades to easily fit in with today’s residential environment. The styling of Riviera Home’s carpets works beautifully with many on-trend colours and interior schemes. We want to be different from the mainstream and this is one of the main reasons we work so successfully with interior designers, offering their clients something which is unique to them.

What are the origins of Riviera Home?

Riviera Home began as a family-run business, with the first generation of the Singla family selling cotton fabrics from their own shop in India’s historic city of Panipat. In 1984 the third generation of the Singla family members ventured into the export of handcrafted products and earned the Gold Medal award from the Handloom Export Promotion Council. The UK office opened in 2013 and we are proud to be running our UK sales and stock operation from the home of carpets in Kidderminster, Worcestershire.

The origins of the brand are embedded in design for functionality with style. At Riviera Home, we spend a great deal of time working on textured carpets in different effects, styles, options to offer something different and exciting to an interior design project.

We use soft, subtle, and natural colour shades which work fantastically well as a foundation base for a new interior design scheme along with the security of high-quality manufacturing in both handmade and machine techniques.

How do you work with interior designers?

Relationships and developing strong trading partnerships are very important to Riviera Home, working very closely with interior designers who we encourage to work with our national network of professional flooring retailers (authorised dealerships), all of whom are highly skilled and experienced in floorcoverings and who can support them with handling and fitting of our carpets. This relationship is supported by our national network of sales professionals and our dedicated team working Riviera Home’s Head office.

We work with designers by utilising a professional display sample box which has a backup sample postage service. We also have a nationwide sales team which can connect, meet, discuss, and help where needed to maintain a constant dialogue and ensure we meet evolving project needs and requirements.

What value does your bespoke offering add to the interior design industry?

At Riviera Home, we can convert all our ranges into bespoke rugs available in the size of your choice. Utilising your choice of tape, finish, texture, colour, style, whether you’re utilising a wide border to compliment or contrast or discreet blind stitching for a unique finish. This service is hand-finished and offers endless options and flexibility. We provide the highest quality products and manufacturing processes, combined with knowledgeable sales staff.

Examples of recent installations are proudly posted on our Riviera Home Instagram page (rivierahomelondon), and we really value the support from all our partners. There is a consistent social media output to help further connect, present, and represent new design ideas and styles available.

How do your services/offering enhance an interior designer’s projects?

Our products and services add huge value to an interior designer’s project by utilising carpet floor coverings and unique design solutions which are design-led, soft, hard wearing, and fashionable along with the greater exclusivity offered by the brand.

There are also a number of completely eco carpet ranges which utilise renewable materials and sustainable manufacturing techniques to create carpets which are biodegradable. We see the use of sustainable manufacturing increasing in the future as we all become more responsible towards our planet.

What are the latest trends you’ve noticed in your client’s requests?

We see the latest trends heading towards a more natural style and look with renewable materials such as wool continuing to be important for warmth, wear, softness, and security.

We also see a return to some of the softer colours coming through in natural cream and champagne colour shades, along with some stronger sand shades to work with bronze and brass tones are becoming fashionable.
