This property, dating back to 1902, is a stunning example of the Arts and Crafts movement. Rossi Studio approached the project by stripping the existing room, knocking down walls, and starting the entire renovation from the bare bones. Our goal was to create a modern, luxurious master bedroom with two en-suites and two walk-in closets, while preserving the charm of this historic home.
To achieve this, we worked extensively on the layout, altering key architectural features of the property. The house originally had two staircases: a main family/social one and a secondary service staircase leading to the kitchen. By removing the service staircase, we not only opened up space for a larger kitchen downstairs but also gained valuable space upstairs to design a spacious new master suite.
Collaborating closely with our architectural team, we presented the client with several layout options, each with a clear indication of associated costs. The property, being old, had no insulation in its double brick walls, which made heating the home difficult and inefficient. To improve energy efficiency, we added 100mm insulation to all external walls and 50mm insulation to the internal walls.
One of the key challenges of the new layout was incorporating four doors into the master bedroom for the two en-suites and two walk-in closets, without compromising the room's aesthetics. To resolve this, we designed bespoke wall panelling, turning the doors into a discreet and elegant feature.
In terms of interior design, we used a palette of neutral tones, natural wood finishes, and a variety of textures with accents of green to create a tranquil and inviting space. The lighting plan was carefully considered, incorporating ceiling spotlights, LED lighting to highlight the curtains and headboard, and a mix of pendant and bedside table lamps to enhance the room’s cozy and relaxing ambiance.
By thoughtfully addressing both the architectural challenges and aesthetic desires of the client, we successfully transformed this 1902 Arts and Crafts property into a modern, energy-efficient, and luxurious master suite. The final result is a harmonious blend of functionality and beauty, providing the clients with a comfortable, stylish retreat that fits seamlessly into the heritage of their home.

About Vispring Ltd
Vispring is one of the world’s leading luxury bed brands, manufacturing in the UK since 1901. Based in Plymouth since 1970, Vispring sells to 59 countries globally and is the benchmark for handmade, bespoke, high-quality beds made using only the finest natural materials. With values of excellence and craftsmanship at its core, Vispring epitomises a distinctly British form of elegance. Their beds combine technical prowess with a bespoke approach worthy of the finest tailoring and are the international standard for comfort and sophistication. Vispring has graced the first-class cabins of legendary ocean liners – including Titanic – the suites of the world’s most luxurious hotels, including The Dorchester; and on board a Princess Yacht or Gulfstream Jet.
During this project by NB Interiors, the master bedroom went under a transformation from smaller details such as moving the bed location over slightly to make way for wall lights and centralising this more on the wall, to a more dramatic change that had a bigger impact; the opening up of the entrance to the dressing room/wardrobe.
Prior to the updates this was a door from the bedroom into the wardrobe, to open up the area this door was fully removed and the entrance was opened up to make a wider doorway. This meant the room felt less door heavy, reducing from three to two in total in the bedroom, and brought this space more into the bedroom, it made the whole room feel bigger, allowing in more light.
With the original built in wardrobe’s removed the layout was reconfigured and new bespoke wardrobes were built in but this time also including a dressing table and window seat with shoe storage. By removing a radiator from under the window and adding in underfloor heating instead allowed storage to wrap around the room and made it possible to have a dressing table, with the bench seat under the window doubled up as shoe storage.
The colour scheme was restful, light and airy. Clean lines and minimalist style with furniture, wardrobe handles, bespoke wardrobes, bespoke headboard all created a contemporary but timeless master bedroom.
Textured wallpaper was used on the main wall and also repeated this on the wardrobe doors, a soft loop wool carpet was added, texture fabric with piping for the headboard was repeated for the bench seat cushion, plus the curtains and roman blinds were made of three different but complementary fabrics – this was to create a design feature and add more detail to the room, but also keeping the straight, minimal lines.
Attention detail features throughout the room, notably the textured finials on the curtain pole, the green floating shelves linking the sage green into the bedroom and creating a cohesive flow. The final result of this bedroom renovation meant it felt more spacious, open, lighter and tranquil.

Vispring, the luxury British bed maker has unveiled Charlotte, a new limited-edition bed that epitomises the brand's dedication to design, uncompromising quality and sustainability. Fusing classic and modern design aesthetics, the Charlotte bed includes a handcrafted all-natural mattress and cushioned headboard, paired with a contemporary design bedframe, with either a slatted or divan base. Offering a harmonious blend of comfort and style, the Charlotte bedframe and mattress can be purchased together or separately.
Crafted by hand at Vispring’s factory in Plymouth, UK, the Charlotte mattress is filled with a sumptuous mix of locally sourced Exmoor Horn wool and TENCEL™ - a sustainable fibre, produced from tree pulp. Exmoor Horn wool comes from the Exmoor Horn sheep, one of Britain’s oldest native sheep breeds that graze the upland areas of Devon and West Somerset, close to where Vispring beds are made. A diet of rough heather moorland means it produces a soft, springy fleece, perfect for creating Vispring’s signature cloud-like comfort. The Charlotte mattress also features hand-nested calico pocket springs and is available in four tensions: soft, medium, firm and extra-firm.
For the ultimate Vispring luxury, the Charlotte bed offers a range of exquisite fabrics from the Timeless and Natural Collections, allowing customers to create truly bespoke bed designs for a personalised sleeping experience. Further customisation includes choosing from three metal leg finishes suitable for a range of bedroom interior schemes.

On stepping into the showroom, visitors are invited to discover Vispring’s array of luxury beds and mattresses, including the Herald Mattress paired with the Helios Headboard on a High Divan, which features a subtle yet innovative storage solution thanks to built-in Conti standard draws. The clients were building their dream home and this was to be a once in a lifetime project. They wanted a comfortable family home that was perfect for entertaining friends as well as spending time together as a family, and they were keen on sports and fitness so a gym was a necessity. They wanted high quality materials that would last and stand up to the rigours of pets and teen children and wanted the interior design of their home to be welcoming and casual rather than a stuffy show home.
The clients had lived in the USA for a few years previously and liked the West Coast style so American interiors were an influence. The architecture of the property meant that there was extensive glazing with views to the gardens so we also used a calming neutral palette but with soft and natural colours to try and link the indoor and outdoor space.
A delay to the window delivery meant that there was a knock on to other elements such as plastering and decorating but the builders did a sterling job to try and keep to the overall schedule. We had a couple of stock issues with chosen items but we managed to find alternatives. Overall this was a lovely project to work on and we had fabulous clients!
The handover day was definitely the highlight, seeing the client’s reaction to the finished home, complete with all the furnishings and accessories. They also had a party not long after which I was invited to, and to see the reaction of their friends and family to the interiors was wonderful.
The SBID awards recognise excellent design, both in the UK and Internationally. I am always inspired by the projects that are shortlisted and have gained immense pride from being shortlisted for the awards previously too. I am incredibly proud of the work that we do as a small Interior Design Studio and wanted a chance to share our work with a wider audience, including our peers.
I’m delighted to be a finalist and so pleased for our clients too that their home has been shortlisted. Whilst a lot of our work is from repeat clients or via word-of mouth, I think new clients in particular are pleased to know that your work is recognised as being at a certain level, and from a business perspective that makes being the awards very helpful.

The bedroom is one of the most important spaces in any project, whether residential or hotelier.
Considering the design of the room and ensuring that each element works effortlessly to create somewhere that promotes rest and enjoyment is key. Working closely with our global clientele over the past year, we’ve seen a noticeable shift in how designers are approaching each project, with a focus on creating a space of sanctuary. Each stage of the design process is an opportunity to create a space that evokes calm via colours, materials, furniture and accessory choice resulting in the perfect room layout.
As the centrepiece to all bedroom specifications, bed choice is key, and comfort is king. Think about both bed frame and mattress choice, as a deep slumber will be pivotal to guests not only feeling refreshed but recommending their experience to friends and colleagues.
Although we’ve seen hints over the past year or so that interior designers are becoming more experimental with colour, a calming selection of beiges, earth tones and off-whites remain top choices across our upholstered bed range. Texture is used as a way to add interest without opting for colour, with tactile fabrics such as sumptuously soft velvets, or comforting boucle offering the perfect starting point to create a neutral décor scheme that does not lack in design detail or impact.
Collaborating with our clients over the years, we’ve taken on board feedback on the importance of all the small details and our flexibility to fulfil bespoke requests means each element is considered, from bed height to access to switches, sockets and lighting.
Additional furniture should complement the overarching goal to create calm. Whilst acting as a decorative item and adding visual interest to a room, a well-chosen occasional chair at the right time of day can be either a relaxing additional space to unwind, or somewhere to sit and work. We’ve noticed an increase in designers’ incorporating seating at the foot of the bed, whether in the form of a chaise longue or decorative bench, again combining practicality that is tailored to the desired aesthetic. Bedside tables too should balance form and function, acting as a space to store personal items, while supporting stylistic factors within the room.
Often considered more by residential designers, incorporating elements of biophilia through the use of natural materials, and colours inspired by the outside environment has a multitude of benefits in hotel specifications. First popularised in the 50s to boost productivity in office design, this is a trend that has crept into hotel planning to promote a peaceful atmosphere.

Whilst the majority of Britain is working from home, it is more important than ever to create a bedroom that is serene and harmonious. Your bedroom is not only where you sleep but where you begin and end the day by reading, meditating or simply unwinding. We have put together this guide on how to create a relaxing and restful bedroom.
When trying to establish the key elements to change or improve in your bedroom take some time to clear the room by removing items that you no longer want and ensure that everything is put away. This will help you see the room as a blank canvas and make gaps or missing items clear.
Select a colour that is the most calming for you. A neutral base palette, such as ivory or sand, will open up the space making it feel clean, light and bright. It will also give you maximum flexibility with your space. If you do not like neutral colours then consider muted colours such as sage green or duck egg blue. To give your bedroom a refined and sophisticated finish choose a fabric wallpaper to bring texture and warmth to the space.
Position your bed against a wall, with space either side, and select an upholstered headboard with piping or studs to add an element of detail. To recreate a 5-star hotel feel at home use a mattress topper and double up your duvet inside the covers for a sumptuous sleeping experience. For maximum comfort, invest in the best bedding you can afford with a high tread count. Add to your bed by selecting some decorative cushions with small scale patterns or textures with a cashmere throw at the end of the bed.
It is important that you do not have too much furniture in your bedroom as this will make it feel cramped. Think carefully about what is important to you. If you have limited storage space then choose a beautiful chest of drawers or if you want a space to get ready at then choose a dressing table and chairs. Consider the furniture’s size and shape so that it fits within the proportions of the room. When accessorising your bedside table carefully select some key pieces, such as a jewellery dish and a candle, so that you do not clutter the space.
Your bedroom should aim to connect all your senses seamlessly to evoke the feelings and emotions you desire. By bringing scent into the bedroom you can set the tone and mood in your bedroom. You should consider picking a scent that is appropriate for the season: light and floral scents of the summer, deep autumnal and forest scents for autumn and spicy, festive scents for the winter.
Lighting is important to create a calming ambience in your room. Having a dimmer switch on the main light in your bedroom will help to create softer lighting. If this is not possible, you can create a restful environment by turning off the main light and utilising reading lights on your bedside table for warmth and comfort.
