Design Practice: Muza Lab
Location: London
If a picture paints words by the thousand, then a space can inspire entire stories by the million. For us, these stories are everything. We seek them out in every place we work. We let our curiosity roam free around a landscape. We explore its past and interrogate its character until it’s told us all it can - its legends, its quirks, and its crafts. With these elements in our hands, we shape a new tale.
We believe in creating authentic connections to the places we design for. The process for all of our projects hinges on understanding their environment, both geographically and culturally, and reflecting this in their designs. We use textures, patterns and colours to bridge the past and present through contemporary design, in a way that evokes memory, history and the soul of a destination. It is within the minute stitches, handwoven fabrics, and bespoke touches that a story unfolds, connecting guests with the cultural heartbeat of a locale.
To design with true authenticity is to honour the artisans whose techniques are passed down through generations, via patterns and craftsmanship in the regions where we work. These patterns hold a language of their own, etched into the cultural fabric of every region. By working closely with artisans, we celebrate not only their skill but the stories behind each form. We immerse ourselves in these stories and explore their evolution within traditional clothing, regional books, and archives. We are then able to understand these regional patterns in a way that allows us to reinterpret them in detailed contemporary designs. We experiment and explore. We then edit and hone. As we do so, the essence of a location is woven into the sensations of our space. We bring them together to form something moving, memorable, and magical.
Our spaces are where people go to share special moments with those most precious to them. Our aim is simple: to make these moments rich with feelings that can’t be shaken; to create settings for stories that are held close to the heart, and told again and again.
We wanted to return to the heart of design. To create a studio where we could be more present, more hands-on, and more connected to every part of the journey. Muza Lab was born from a shared desire to build something personal, that focused on people, places and their stories. A place where curiosity leads, where stories shape space, and where design is guided by feeling just as much as by form.
We design to tell stories. Every project begins with the landscape around it and the culture that holds it. We listen to the light, the legends, the textures, and the crafts that belong to that place. Then we translate those layers into something new. We build environments that feel considered, that evoke memory, and that are grounded in emotion and meaning.
We care deeply about materials - how they feel, how they age, and how they speak to their surroundings. Every surface in our projects is chosen with intent.
We are drawn to natural finishes, handmade elements, and materials that carry a quiet richness. Texture is everything. From hand-stitched leather to carved timber, from heavy linens to raw stone, it’s the layering of these finishes that brings a space to life.
It’s not about being decorative. It’s about creating moments that invite touch, that hold light in interesting ways, and that offer something new each time you experience them. For us, beauty lies in the detail, in the craftsmanship, and in the way materials come together to shape mood, memory, and meaning.
