Grid Thirteen Unveil the Overgate Hospice with a New Family Lounge and Snug 29th October 2026 | IN HEALTHCARE & WELLNESS | BY SBID

Leeds-based design studio Grid Thirteen is proud to announce the completion of the first phase of its support for Overgate Hospice, Halifax, by designing and installing two new family spaces completely free of charge. The rooms answer the hospice’s brief of making sure families feel supported and can be together in private spaces that provide a warm, calm and comfortable environment when visiting their loved ones at the recently extended hospice.

The studio’s support was provided to assist Overgate Hospice’s ambitious Big Build Appeal, where the hospice invited the community and local businesses to support the appeal through funding and partnerships to expand and provide improved, modernised facilities to the new wings of the hospice that are so vital to the West Yorkshire community.

Natalie Fry, Founder & Creative Director of Grid Thirteen, describes the new rooms in Overgate Hospice’s new in-patient wing as “Our Lounge & Snug Family Rooms are designed to uphold dignity and comfort. As a studio, this project is deeply personal to us. It’s about giving back to our home community and supporting the extraordinary, compassionate work the hospice delivers every day.”

Both new Family Rooms allow families to gather together or simply take a moment to themselves, whilst staying close to the person they love who is in palliative or end of life care at Overgate Hospice. Grid Thirteen Design Studio worked closely with Overgate Hospice and appointed interior designer Elaine Lewis Designs on the design of the spaces, combining their expertise to create environments that feel reassuring, considered and supportive, rather than clinical.

Grid Thirteen Design Studio has built a strong reputation since its launch in 2013 across the North for creating beautiful, personalised interiors that reflect the studio’s ethos of individuality, craftsmanship, innovation and client-centred design. This collaborative design approach was reflected throughout the spaces created for Overgate Hospice, where every design choice was made with empathy in mind, ensuring the rooms feel warm, comforting, and truly supportive during extremely difficult times with family and loved ones.

For example, in the Family Lounge, the design team created a space that provides comfortable seating for patients and visitors to sit together using materials that are warm and calming. SieMatic was delighted to be a partner for the project providing SLC furniture in Agate Grey and Cottage Oak kitchen cabinetry for the kitchen. Quooker also provided the Nordic Twin Taps in a chrome finish boiling water taps with coordinating soap dispensers so visitors can make instant hot drinks, alongside filtered cold water. A round dining table and chairs also allow families to prepare meals in the kitchen and eat together. On one of the walls, an elegant, framed media wall was designed, allowing families to enjoy movie nights together on the large screen, connect it virtually with friends and family, or browse cherished photo memories easily linked from a personal device.

Like the Family Lounge, the Family Snug space is another holistically designed room, with Grid Thirteen and Elaine Lewis Designs working together to create a private, peaceful space within the Inpatient Unit of the Hospice. This room provides a private, peaceful space complete with a kitchen and seating area where families can have important discussions with clinical teams, take time to simply be alone, or sit together in quiet reflection.

In January 2027, Grid Thirteen’s Phase 2 will showcase a new holistic ‘Wellbeing Room’ at Overgate Hospice which will be located in the new Day Hospice Wing. Designed to restore comfort, dignity and a sense of normality, the Wellbeing Room will have a range of comfortable seating that will allow patients to access gentle pampering and wellbeing services. This includes a hair washing facility with a backwash sink, so that those patients living with advanced illnesses or mobility challenges can enjoy a therapeutic hair wash and a dedicated Nail Station for manicures and pedicures, while remaining close with their loved ones to encourage positive and memorable conversations.

Laura Golding, Director of Income Generation at Overgate Hospice, said: “We are incredibly grateful to Grid Thirteen Design Studio and their partners for their generous support of the Big Build Appeal. To have the design and fitting of these important spaces provided completely free of charge is truly amazing and will make a real difference to what we are able to deliver for patients and families in our new hospice. Their kindness and commitment will help create warm and welcoming environments where families can find comfort and patients can feel cared for with dignity.”
