Sustainable Scandinavian Eco-Design Comes to West One Bathrooms

Continuing their mission to find innovative bathroom products, West One Bathrooms have added Finnish brand, Woodio, to their collection. So what makes Woodio so cutting edge in the eco-friendly bathroom world? Duncan continues: “Every product is made from a signature material called Woodio®. It’s the world’s first 100% waterproof wood composite, designed to replace ceramic and stone materials sustainably. The raw material used comes from aspen wood chips, sourced from PEFC and FSC certified forests in Finland, and the range also includes products made from wood chips derived from the by-products of the Finnish forest industry. These wood chips are mixed with polyester resin, which means that half of the material is bio-based, and half is fossil.”

Within the collection is a range of bathroom products including toilets, freestanding baths, basins, accessories and even sheet material that can be used on walls instead of other surface materials. Each can be purchased in one of 14 different shades.

Woodio’s manufacturing process doesn’t require high temperatures so has low energy requirements, and the company also uses 100% renewable energy, too. It also generates minimal material waste, and water is only needed for colouring the wood chips. Thanks to these factors, the carbon footprint of Woodio products is 30-50% lower than that of traditional ceramics or stone-based products. The finished product feels amazing, too – soft, warm and smooth – making it a welcome alternative to traditional bathroom surfaces.

Duncan continues: “The wood chips are hand-dyed using water-soluble stains, achieving beautiful colours inspired by the wild nature of the north – from the colourful forest floor to the snow that covers it in wintertime. It’s a stunning, contemporary range that includes basins, baths, toilets and panels, with an array of shades to choose from. There’s also the possibility to create a bespoke colour for larger orders – this is a great opportunity for interior designers tackling big projects which balance contemporary style with eco-friendly credentials.”

Sustainability also comes from the quality and longevity that Woodio products offer – completely waterproof, scratch-resistant, dirt-repellent and UV-resistant, they’re easy to maintain. The wood used in the designs stores carbon throughout its lifecycle, and at the end of its life, can be disposed of as 100 percent energy waste or returned to Woodio for crushing, reusing and reusing in the manufacture of cement – it’s a brand that really does offer a perfect circular economy.
