As designers and creators of floorcoverings for over 30 years, Crucial Trading continuously looks at innovative ways to work with sustainable and natural fibres. Adding to their constantly evolving collections, their technical and creative teams have recently created three new designs in wool – Collage, Weather Watching, and Balance – while adding new colourways to the popular wool Mississippi collection.

Collage

Collage provides a dynamic mélange of pattern and texture in a choice of five colourways that are inspired by modernist art. With names such as Soft Focus, Modernity, Juxtaposition, Paper Layer, and Mixed Media in a collage of blended hues, they are works of art in their own right!

Woven from 100% New Zealand Wool, Collage is a chunky 6 ply tufted Loop Pile so definitely one to sink your toes into whether your creativity takes you in the direction of a bespoke rug or wall-to-wall fitted carpet.

Collage - Mixed Media CG103

Balance

Balance - Timeless BA502

Balance is a curation of quiet colour and texture designed to encourage reflection and restorative living. Extending mindfulness to how we exist in our interiors, this design champions beauty in the simplistic. Available in a choice of seven earthy and considered colourways; Timeless, Pause, Silence, Intuition, Clarity, Philosophy, and Grace, Balance is quite literally something to meditate on.

Woven from 100% New Zealand Wool, chosen for its pureness of colour, Balance introduces an element of cut-pile/twist to Crucial Trading’s offering. A gentle balance between the cut and the loop results in an almost two-tone finish to the floor covering.

Weather Watching

Weather Watching is inspired by our British obsession with the weather. Earthy, subtle tones take direction from atmospheres and the unpredictable with enticing and atmospheric names such as Soft Rain, Thunderstorm Play, Overcast Day, and Indian Summer. Some days it storms, some days it shines, this is how the flower grows.

The palette of calm colours gives the home a sense of grounding whilst creating a backdrop with which to live our lives. The collection is woven from hank dyed 3 ply tufted loop pile British Wool and comes in a choice of 11 different colourways.

Balance - Clarity BA503

Mississippi

Mississippi has become a design classic since it was introduced 18 years ago as a result of the creative team playing around with fragments of coloured wool fibres that were available on the floor of the workshop. This hero design welcomes eight new colourways into the collection bringing the total offering to 16.
The new palette is inspired by natural dyes, providing softer, more muted tones for an earthy feel that becomes rich through application. Pale blues and greys combine with gentle tones of green, red, and brown for a relaxed interior that still has the edge.

Mississippi is woven from 100% New Zealand wool which is chosen for its purity, enabling consistency and depth of colour.

Nora Chou is a luxury interior designer working on projects internationally in both the residential and hospitality industry. Focusing on creating layered moments through design, her mission is to create a sense of warmth, life and texture into her designs. Having grown her roots in Hong Kong and proceeding to live in equally vibrant cities including London and New York, she offers a certain cultural and lifestyle sensibility to the way she approaches creating interiors for her clients.

Sky and Earth is a rug collection inspired by colours, life and energy we find in the great outdoors. The handpicked palettes by Nora Chou (“Sunrise”, “Dusk” and “Terra”) encourage colours to be brought into our interior spaces.

Bring in your outdoors.

What was the process of designing Sky & Earth?

When I was first approached by Jeff, the managing director of Silk Avenue, to design a rug for their designer profile range, there were many ideas that came to mind. I find rugs often help ground a space by connecting the interior palette of your chosen furnishings or to make a new statement through colour and texture. From an aesthetic perspective it’s quite similar to how paintings interact with spaces. However, rugs add an additional softness into interiors.

Sky & Earth came to fruition during the Covid lockdown period. Inspired by the Great Outdoors, it is a rug collection that is all about bringing the colours and textures from nature into our interior spaces. From the get-go, I knew that I wanted to create a collection to include a broad range of designs that would fit within different settings whether it be a traditional country house, or a contemporary set up in a high-rise apartment. During the creative process, I found it important to create a collection that is a family of designs and a continuation of the narrative, allowing me to develop and experiment with the creative direction.

The 6 designs from Sky & Earth are captured moments that can be layered into interiors through the hand-picked palettes I have personally selected (“Sunrise”, “Dusk” and Terra”). The designs can also be completely customized to a palette of your choosing.

"Spring Buds - Sunrise II" from Sky & Earth, a rug collection by Nora Chou exclusively for Silk Avenue

Is there anything else we should know about the rugs?

Silk Avenue manufactures the hand-tufted rugs in Nepal and handles all shipping internationally.

The designs from Sky & Earth are constructed of various compositions. For example, “Spring Buds” has a composition of 100% hand-tufted wool, which is great for hospitality settings and households with children. Generally speaking, wool is low maintenance, bounces back into its original state after being walked on and is typically less flammable than other fibers. The matte finish of wool also allows the colours of the rug to appear richer and deeper.

There are also other designs from the collection with a combination composition of wool and bamboo silk. – “Petals”, “Hydrangea”, “Flow Ombre” “Flow Solid” and “Dots Play”. In these designs certain areas of the rugs are accentuated with bamboo silk and raised pile heights. The slight sheen against the matte background mimics the way light is often reflected through nature and is a play on both texture and surface.

Do the rugs come in different sizes?

All of the designs can be customized to any size to suit your interiors. However, we do have standard sizes with the latest pricing that can be found at: www.norachou.com/collection

Three distinct furniture styles, seventeen colour choices, three vanity basins and two brassware styles make the new Root range by VitrA one of the most flexible and customisable collections on the market.

Root is a complete bathroom solution with furniture, basins, taps, showers and storage units all within the range. With three different design options as well as various textures, colours and sizes, Root allows for a truly personalised bathroom experience.

Root furniture is available in a choice of three different designs: flat, groove and classic. Flat – a simple style for those with a minimalist taste; Groove – a contemporary option with a panelled style; and Classic – a modern take on shaker design.

Interior designers can choose from seventeen assorted colours, including retro green, dark blue, pearl grey and walnut in three types of finish – gloss, matt, or wood. The matt colours have a PVC finish which is highly durable with a water absorption rate of 0.5%. The gloss and wood colours have a PET finish which is a sustainable material produced by 100% recycled plastic and is both heat and moisture resistant.

Handle options include matt black, chrome and matt white, with two distinct styles to suit the different furniture designs.

A choice of three washbasins – Integra, Integra Classic and Zentrum – provide further flexibility. Integra washbasins have a deep basin with flat edges, Integra Classic has a short upstand at the back, creating a more traditional look, and Zentrum basins have a more geometrical outer with a rounded internal basin shape.

The brassware is available in two styles, Root Round and Root Square, and in five colours, chrome, brushed nickel, copper, matt black and gold, across the array of basin, bath, and shower mixers.

To help designers in their bathroom design journey, VitrA has developed the Root Configurator. This online tool allows users to experiment with the various styles, colour finishes and sizes to find the perfect bathroom design. In addition to the washbasin units, the tool includes the taps and additional storage units available to enable users to design their whole bathroom space.

What are the origins of your brand?

The company was originally founded in Stockholm in 1949, by Nils Erik Eklund, who came up with the idea of recycling textile offcuts into woven rag rugs. In many ways, our founder was ahead of his time and his ability to see an opportunity where others couldn’t still inspires us. Today, his granddaughters Annica and Marie keep this same spirit alive but since they took over the company from their parents Lars and Monica in 2003, they have also been on a mission – to make Bolon a design-led innovator and fuse the conservative, traditional flooring industry with the boundless creativity of the world of fashion. Under their leadership, business has transformed from a traditional weaving mill into an international design brand with clients such as Armani, Google, Four Seasons Hotels, Chanel, Adidas, Apple and Missoni Home and we’ve collaborated with world-renowned designers and architects. We are proud of our progress, but our story continues – we want to keep moving forward and innovating, creating sustainable, world leading flooring and rug solutions.

How do you work with interior designers?

We have a team of people, both in the UK and internationally, who work closely with interior designers to keep them abreast of our new products. We aim to offer the best service possible every step of the way, including quick and efficient technical, design and sample support.

What value does your sector add to the interior design industry?

Innovation, inspiration and unique flooring and rug products.

How do your services/offering enhance an interior designer’s projects?

Bolon creates beautiful flooring and rugs that stay looking that way, even after years of use. Our multiple custom options mean that there is a unique solution for each project a designer is working on, depending on the requirements of the client.

What are the latest trends you’ve noticed in your client’s requests?

Sustainability is a big part of our DNA and we are proud of our impressive sustainability credentials. We have noticed that these are of increasing interest to all interior designers, and we’re thrilled that this has become such an important part of how designers work.  It is also essential that our flooring and rugs are long lasting, so the cleanability of our flooring is also of increasing interest. Designers and their clients need flooring and rugs that are practical, as well as beautiful. People have had bad experiences with flooring that is not cleanable and therefore looks tired quickly after very little use, so they love how easy our flooring is to clean.

We’ve also noticed a number of requests for rugs that can be used both inside and outdoors.

Introducing the latest flooring collection from sustainable Swedish design company, Bolon – Truly rugs.

Designed to make a statement, the Truly rug collection features enlarged patterns, colour effects and hyper texture. Truly is a bold collection, created in-house, and shaped around the creative vision of the five women who make up the design team, including Annica and Marie. The range consists of five made-to-measure rug designs, each with its own expression and identity, representing the passions and expertise of the Bolon team.

Bolon Rugs 'Truly' - I See You

Bolon Rugs 'Truly' - Anything Everything

The creation of the Truly rug collection follows on from both the introduction of made-to-measure rugs to Bolon’s product portfolio last year, and the launch of the Truly flooring collection, earlier this year.

Headquartered in Sweden but globally renowned, Bolon is passionate about sustainability which is woven into the brand’s DNA. Truly is made in Sweden, only with renewable energy and using a mixture of recycled and new material.

In the 30 years since it was founded, TSAR Carpets create holistic compositions that empower its wide range of clientele — from commercial, hospitality, and residential customers — to achieve a cohesive architectural expression from the ground up. Born from a passion for textiles and enchanted by the hand-tufted technique, TSAR Carpets is continuously inspired by the German concept of the “gesamtkunstwerk,” meaning “a total work of art” — with TSAR Carpets founder David Sharpley describing the handtufting process as “painting with fibres.”

Known for their design work in both the public and private sector, the award-winning Melbourne-based architecture firm Lyons enlisted TSAR Carpets to install approximately 104.34 m2 of its signature freeform hand-tufted carpet in its office space, providing a colour-forward palette full of flair and panache.

Firm founder Carey Lyon chose to work with TSAR again to outfit the office after his immense satisfaction with the custom hand-tufted carpet he sourced for his private residence, proving that TSAR Carpets’ unparalleled flooring proficiency can be applied to a variety of applications, functions and environments.

Private residence design

The home of Carey Lyon required exceptional hand-tufted flooring for four various spaces in his home, including a hallway, sitting area, lounge and study. Carey turned to the TSAR Carpets team for its expertise and honest advice. As a brand that is not afraid to take risks, TSAR’s company-owned value chain allows the team to continually experiment and perfect a multitude of construction techniques.

Working closely with TSAR’s team, Carey designed the carpet’s pattern, which is based on standard cartographic symbols for a swamp. (Used on maps, cartographic symbols are coloured lines that serve as legends to denote areas of vegetation, water, and contours, etc.) The aim of the design was to summon the history of the old wetland landscapes of the Yaluk-ut Weelam people of Port Phillip Bay who were lost under the ‘reclaimed’ swamplands of Elwood. To bring the swamp landscape to life, colour was another thoughtful consideration and Carey and the team reviewed several different custom poms before settling on brown and blue shades that best matched the carpet’s marshy theme.

The challenge of flooring the irregular shape of each of the four unique areas within Carey’s home presented the team with an opportunity to achieve custom solutions — the exact placement of each blue swamp-like “pond” was a highly meticulous and diligent feat, which the team was able to execute in a timely and thorough manner.

“Optimal performance and product longevity is the impetus for all of our designs and projects. We understand the custom process thoroughly and treat every project with care,” says Sharpley.

Office design

With the office, Carey and the Lyons team returned to TSAR as they were seeking a flooring partner who could provide a cohesive, durable and innovative design for its highly-trafficked lobby, library and four meeting rooms. Like Carey’s home, the team gravitated towards a hand-tufted solution due to its high-quality utility and material ability to produce stunning patterns.

“TSAR Carpets treats every custom project with care and detail. We were excited to once again partner with the team thanks to the company’s incredible technical proficiency and emphasis on performance,” says Carey Lyon.

Lyons Architecture Office

Originally the design brief called for a continuous rainbow appearance featuring more than 58 colours, but due to budget constraints TSAR and Lyons teams joined forces to find a happy solution that balanced aesthetics, budget and performance, ensuring Lyons received the most desirable product. In the end, the client was overjoyed with the final result: An original selection of energetic and colorful flooring compositions featuring a one-of-a-kind point of view.

“Comfort and connection don’t just belong in the home. I was thrilled to incorporate TSAR’s exquisite flooring into our office environment to provide our employees and visitors with a sense of optimism and day-to-day joy,” says Carey Lyon.

“Clients continue to work with us because we value performance and value, just as much as we appreciate the incorporation of bold colors, patterns, and forms,” says Sharpley.

Introducing the Passage collection, celebrating the joy of seasons and the passing of time. Passage is a series of hand-tufted rug designs made in collaboration with architect and interior designer Brooke Aitken, Founder of Brooke Aitken Design. Inspired by a vivid dream about the passage of time, Brooke worked closely with TSAR Carpets to translate her vision and evocative sketches into six rug patterns – Day, Night, Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn.

The ebb and flow of time and the continual changing and passing of the seasons is reflected in the collections’ patterns and graphic lines, which inform a sense of movement and placemaking. The collection’s contemplative designs are enhanced by using rich colours, such as midnight blue and russet dawn red, further reflecting how natural light changes from day to night, season to season. Each pattern is available in two different colour options.

The collection will be sold exclusively at TSAR’s studios in Melbourne, Sydney, New York, London, and Shanghai.

How would you describe your style?

Our ethos and style of the brand at Riviera is all about function, suitability, sustainability, inspiration, fashion, and exclusivity. Our products include innovative flat woven collections, tufted wool loops in solid dyed and heather blends along with blended fibres such as Tencel and Bamboo. Our carpets and rugs are textured using plain, natural colour shades to easily fit in with today’s residential environment. The styling of Riviera Home’s carpets works beautifully with many on-trend colours and interior schemes. We want to be different from the mainstream and this is one of the main reasons we work so successfully with interior designers, offering their clients something which is unique to them.

What are the origins of Riviera Home?

Riviera Home began as a family-run business, with the first generation of the Singla family selling cotton fabrics from their own shop in India’s historic city of Panipat. In 1984 the third generation of the Singla family members ventured into the export of handcrafted products and earned the Gold Medal award from the Handloom Export Promotion Council. The UK office opened in 2013 and we are proud to be running our UK sales and stock operation from the home of carpets in Kidderminster, Worcestershire.

The origins of the brand are embedded in design for functionality with style. At Riviera Home, we spend a great deal of time working on textured carpets in different effects, styles, options to offer something different and exciting to an interior design project.

We use soft, subtle, and natural colour shades which work fantastically well as a foundation base for a new interior design scheme along with the security of high-quality manufacturing in both handmade and machine techniques.

How do you work with interior designers?

Relationships and developing strong trading partnerships are very important to Riviera Home, working very closely with interior designers who we encourage to work with our national network of professional flooring retailers (authorised dealerships), all of whom are highly skilled and experienced in floorcoverings and who can support them with handling and fitting of our carpets. This relationship is supported by our national network of sales professionals and our dedicated team working Riviera Home’s Head office.

We work with designers by utilising a professional display sample box which has a backup sample postage service. We also have a nationwide sales team which can connect, meet, discuss, and help where needed to maintain a constant dialogue and ensure we meet evolving project needs and requirements.

What value does your bespoke offering add to the interior design industry?

At Riviera Home, we can convert all our ranges into bespoke rugs available in the size of your choice. Utilising your choice of tape, finish, texture, colour, style, whether you’re utilising a wide border to compliment or contrast or discreet blind stitching for a unique finish. This service is hand-finished and offers endless options and flexibility. We provide the highest quality products and manufacturing processes, combined with knowledgeable sales staff.

Examples of recent installations are proudly posted on our Riviera Home Instagram page (rivierahomelondon), and we really value the support from all our partners. There is a consistent social media output to help further connect, present, and represent new design ideas and styles available.

How do your services/offering enhance an interior designer’s projects?

Our products and services add huge value to an interior designer’s project by utilising carpet floor coverings and unique design solutions which are design-led, soft, hard wearing, and fashionable along with the greater exclusivity offered by the brand.

There are also a number of completely eco carpet ranges which utilise renewable materials and sustainable manufacturing techniques to create carpets which are biodegradable. We see the use of sustainable manufacturing increasing in the future as we all become more responsible towards our planet.

What are the latest trends you’ve noticed in your client’s requests?

We see the latest trends heading towards a more natural style and look with renewable materials such as wool continuing to be important for warmth, wear, softness, and security.

We also see a return to some of the softer colours coming through in natural cream and champagne colour shades, along with some stronger sand shades to work with bronze and brass tones are becoming fashionable.

About Riviera Home

Riviera Home is at the forefront of the design and manufacture of traditional handloom and contemporary luxury broadloom carpets and bespoke rugs, aimed at the premium end of the market. We are always looking to stand out from the crowd and to have a unique point of difference in the market. We will be showcasing all our products, including new range introductions at the very popular Design Central Luxury Interior Shows held in March and September each year.

In the 30 years since it was founded, TSAR Carpets create holistic compositions that empower its wide range of clientele — from commercial, hospitality, and residential customers — to achieve a cohesive architectural expression from the ground up. For this reason TSAR was pleased to partner with Melbourne-based interior designers, Suede Interior Design, and Crystalbrook, one of Australia’s leading sustainable and innovative independent hospitality companies.

Located in Newcastle’s iconic Council Administration Centre, Crystalbrook Kingsley Hotel is a sophisticated 130-room five star hotel that features an energetic and considered aesthetic designed by the Suede team.

Pinnacle design in the hotel lobby

Suede Interior Design included hints and glimpses of birds, footprints, and feather motifs in the Crystalbrook Kingsley brand colours of yellow and charcoal to tell the story of Newcastle’s mining past – the canary free from its cage – immortalising the little bird in the timeless style of the hotel.

“Our aim was to create a design that not only reflected Newcastle, but something that would be culturally connected and relevant to its location. The use of curves and rhythm within the guest rooms and public interiors mimic and pay homage to the lines of the architecture of the building,” explained Clifford Rip. “The interiors, therefore, are both nostalgic and effervescent, the kind of design personality that is considered yet effortless in its sophistication.”

Thirlmere design customised in Axminster with custom carving in the guest rooms

The design team tapped TSAR Carpets to provide luxurious, vibrant and eye-catching carpet that both matched the hotel’s yellow hue, as well as the contemporary and elegant mood within the hotel’s guest rooms, penthouse, corridors, lobby, meeting room, restaurant and lounge areas. TSAR employed the design Thirlmere with custom carving for the bedrooms; Habitat for the corridors; a custom design made in collaboration with Suede Interior Design in the Meeting Rooms; and Pinnacle for the Restaurant and Lounge areas.

“TSAR Carpets knows how to blend the story of both traditional and contemporary aesthetics, and we are impressed by their cutting-edge ability to translate a design into a high-quality textile that will stand the test of time,” says Clifford Rip, Founder and Principal at Suede Interior Design.

Pinnacle design in the hotel restaurant

In total, TSAR customised more than 3,500 square metres of in-house designs applicable to individual room placement and based on each area’s needs, including performance and durability.

Given the building’s curved rooms and corridors (the building is known locally as the “Roundhouse”), aligning carpet and mirroring the Thirlmere pattern 8 different times to fit each of the 8 floors was a major objective.

Habitat design customised for the hotel corridors

Employing a carving technique to the custom, large-scale Axminster carpet for an added luxurious accent — as well as true textured feel and semblance — was also achieved, allowing a more budget-conscious, quantity-based product.

This process involves hand-shearing areas of the carpet’s pile in order to create textures around design elements. This particular technique highlights and enhances areas of designs in Axminster — transforming one-dimensional perspectives to patterns that draw the eye across the carpet with ridges and valleys.

“TSAR is driven by the belief that good design goes far beyond aesthetics, which is why we have a reputation for the highest quality and outstanding performance,” says David Sharpely, TSAR Carpets CEO.

“We were pleased to partner with Clifford and his team, who we have worked with over the years. The client trusted us to know the right product to specify, ensuring quality and durability — and at a price point that was within budget. Our knowledge and understanding of carpet design and manufacturing led to a beautiful end product that we are quite proud of.”
