This week’s instalment of the Project of the Week series features a fresh and airy living area design by 2023 SBID Awards Finalist, Victoria Moshchynska Interior Design & Styling.

Victoria Moshchynska was commissioned to renovate Living area of an apartment in Chelsea. The goal was to create a fresh contemporary interior which would combine French and British vibes and would remain relevant for a long time. By emphasising the traditional part of the space and adding modern iconic pieces of design Victoria created a fresh and airy interior where her client could enjoy calmness after her hard working day.

Project: Chelsea Apartment

Location: London, United Kingdom

What was the client's brief?

I was asked to renovate the living room without any structural changes. The client wanted the space to be divided into 2 areas - dining area and lounge area. Her main idea was to have a fresh contemporary interior that would be trendy but also stay relevant for a long time. The budget was limited.

Victoria Moshchynska Interior Design & Styling - Chelsea Apartment

What inspired the design of the project?

The apartment is situated in a historic building in Chelsea, London. This beautiful area is one of my favourites. I like the combination of traditional British architecture and the French vibe of the small brasseries around. I wanted to keep this mood inside the apartment. The apartment is located in the traditional Centre-London building, with high ceilings and wooden floors. So, we agreed to mix classics with a contemporary style to keep this truly London vibe but at the same time to add freshness.

What was the toughest hurdle your team overcame during the project?

The toughest hurdle for the team working with heritage buildings in London is always the process of alterations permission. We agreed that we would do a minimum of changes that need approval. Because our budget was limited, we had to determine the main design anchors to spend on. And so, we did. The glass doors with wooden frames were aimed to separate the space for two zones and to add more texture to the space.

Victoria Moshchynska Interior Design & Styling - Chelsea Apartment

What was your team’s highlight of the project?

I saw these beautiful scenic wallpapers that show the landscape of the French region Brittany and I immediately fell in love with them! The interior design concept was built around those wallpapers. They led us to the colour palette of this interior. Deep green and pale pink became the main ones. Being used for the furniture fabrics they create this fresh and airy space, it feels like being outside. In order to create a long-living interior I mixed a few iconic pieces of design from different times: chairs from Cassina and Vitra, very french-looking Artichoke lamps from Louis Poulsen, etc.

Why did you enter the SBID Awards?

I moved to London from Ukraine last year because of the war. Starting from scratch in your 40th is not easy. New country, new audience, etc. SBID Awards gives me the opportunity to meet the British interior design society, show my work and make myself known.

What has being an Award Finalist meant to you and your business?

It is the second time in a row my project became a finalist of the SBID Awards. It means that my professional experience is recognised by the British interior design society. And for my future clients it means that the standards of my work are high.

What was the client's brief?

Our client’s brief was to create a home that embodies a level of hotel luxury. Inspired by many of Sydney’s luxury hotels – the interior aesthetic needed to deliver uncompromising design that captures the essence of its bayside setting. This five level residence was created to home a family of 5, catered through the integration of custom design, luxury finishes, high end appliances and sanware; creating a house that is an entertainer's dream.

EB Interiors - Jigsaw

What inspired the design of the project?

The inspiration for this project was drawn from hotel luxury as well as the tranquil bay which Jigsaw is situated in, which is evident through the exploration of materiality and detail. The colours, shapes and textures from the bay really inspired our design ethos and to create a palette that would be unique and charming. The interior layout frames the surrounding landscape of the bay through extensive use of glazing allowing the interior to be customised creating a timeless experience. The home surpasses any other family home through a crafted interior of fine quality bespoke joinery, furniture and custom panelling to walls and ceilings throughout.

What was the toughest hurdle your team overcame during the project?

This project was in construction during the pandemic period limiting the opportunity for designers and architects to visit site, minimal collaboration between team members and trades on site. We were unable to physically see some material samples as well as experiencing heavy shipment delays during the lockdown period. There was also a limit to trades available to work on site due to restrictions causing project delays. But we are so very lucky for the commitment of all team members being so flexible during this period allowing for no surprises post pandemic. Even if it wasn’t an ideal situation, it was worth the wait which has left us with such a beautiful end product and one that feels even more exceptional to have overcome these hurdles.

EB Interiors - Jigsaw
EB Interiors - Jigsaw

What was your team’s highlight of the project?

With this home being set across 5 levels we were able to create different environments for each zone. Whilst still keeping a flow of palette throughout. One level being underground, we were able to play with this space and have some fun with the use of mirrors and custom lighting to create a sense of reflection within a complete daylight free area. Our clients were very trusting and happy for us to push the boundaries of where to think outside the square with materiality. We ended up with wonderful spaces that envelop you and where all your senses are engaged.

Seamlessly blending modernism with organic elements, Studio Shanati’s project transforms a penthouse into a tranquil oasis. The shared space merges the living room, dining room, and kitchen, encouraging socialisation and warmth. Robust concrete and noble wooden features counter confinement, while soft curves and selected furniture evoke an essence of organic modernism. Mesmerising suspended ceiling lights and carefully curated artwork create a visual tapestry. The kitchen area blends striking marble and walnut fixtures. In the master bedroom, a serene ambience is achieved through a soft palette and harmonious design elements. This project delivers an enchanting atmosphere with meticulous attention to detail.

Project: Penthouse

Location: London, United Kingdom

What was the client's brief?

The clients, a young family, came to us with a desire to create a multifunctional living room that emphasises a sense of shared space. They aimed to make it a hub for socialising, cooking, and entertainment. They expressed a clear vision for a modern aesthetic that would still feel warm and inviting. They wanted to incorporate natural materials to achieve this atmosphere. Lighting was another crucial aspect for them; they wanted various levels of warmth throughout the space to help set different moods. In the master bedroom, the family's objective was a bit different. They were looking for a serene ambience created through neutral tones and lighting. They wanted it to be a tranquil setting where they could both work and relax. They needed us to avoid making it look like a formal office environment while maintaining functionality. It was a rewarding challenge, and we were thrilled to bring their vision to life.

Studio Shanati - Penthouse

What inspired the design of the project?

The inspiration for this project was multifaceted. We were driven by the creation of rhythm and volume within the space, concepts that often guide our designs. We used noble organic materials such as walnut wood, marble, and concrete to achieve this, giving the space a modern and dynamic ambience. Works of art heavily inspired our choice of furnishings and decor. We selected wall art, sofas, light fixtures, and chairs that resemble art pieces, and we played with geometry in the design, incorporating curves, sharp lines, softness, and robustness. The project was further influenced by what we call "organic modernism." Our clients were looking for a blend of organic and natural elements with a modern twist, so we carefully chose pieces that would align with this theme. Overall, the design was a marriage of art, geometry, and nature, with a touch of modern elegance. We intended to create a warm, cosy, and timeless environment that's refined yet accessible. It represents a true synergy of the elements that inspire us in our work.

Studio Shanati - Penthouse

What was the toughest hurdle your team overcame during the project?

Our toughest challenge during this project was actually in the initial ideation phase. We dealt with concrete walls, which clients wanted to preserve in some parts, which gave the space a cold feel. Although we aimed to bring sophisticated elements of art into the design, we were mindful of turning the rooms into empty and cold art gallery-like spaces. We had to consider carefully combining warmth, modernity, timelessness, and elegance within these constraints. There was a lot of conceptual work involved in finding the correct elements to mitigate this coldness while still appreciating the nobility and solid feel that concrete can offer. Our solution included working with walnut wood, a material we love, to bring warmth into the space. We used the living room's dynamic shelving and wooden wall panels to break up the confined feeling. Warm and curved elements, such as sofas, dining chairs, and lights, were introduced to make the space more lively. The dining table's wooden top, and Riva 1920 wooden bench helped tilt the whole interior towards a natural organic ambience. We strategically chose various elements to transform the space into something warm and inviting. In the bedroom, we decided to take a different approach by using ivory wall panelling and abstaining from the harshness of concrete. This allowed us to achieve the desired ambience while maintaining the overall cohesive feel of the design. So, while we were fortunate not to encounter any insurmountable hurdles, this particular challenge required a thoughtful and creative approach. Seeing how these challenges can lead to innovative solutions is always rewarding, and we were thrilled with how this space turned out.

Studio Shanati - Penthouse

What was your team’s highlight of the project?

The highlight was the work we did with the lighting. Our clients came to us with a specific request: they wanted an ambience that would make the space feel both dimensional and warm, especially during the evenings. We knew this was an exciting challenge since lighting is a crucial, transformative element in interior design. Approaching this task, we delved into it with both curiosity and precision. We meticulously selected each lighting piece, always questioning whether it harmonised with the space and whether it successfully melded an organic feel with a modern twist. It was vital for us that each piece could stand on its own as a work of art yet also blend effortlessly into the surrounding decor without overshadowing other elements. We were also fortunate that the apartment was bathed in natural light during the day. This aspect led us to choose pendant lights from Silvio Piatelli, hoping they would catch the sunrises and sunsets, reflecting them as sparkles in the lighting fixtures. This decision added a layer of warmth and complexity to the space, enhancing its character. The resulting lighting scheme fulfilled our clients' wishes and brought a distinctive, artistic flair to the space.

This week’s instalment of the Project of the Week series features a traditional Indian styled beach house design by 2023 SBID Awards Finalist, Pencil & Monk.

We are entrusted with revamping a beach house in Uthandi, Chennai. Our client desires a contemporary retreat infused with traditional Indian style. Situated by the sea, the property’s expansive landscapes provide an ideal backdrop. Our goal is to blend modern interiors with Indian elements, evoking tranquility and a connection with nature. The client envisions an outdoor open bar area for social gatherings, accommodating both intimate and larger events against the magnificent sea views. Our team of experts in interior design, landscape architecture, and project management will ensure the successful execution of the client’s vision.

Pencil & Monk - Beach House at Uthandi

What was the client's brief?

The client had a special desire. They dreamed of transforming the space into a special spot that would bring them a sense of refreshment and renewal. They wanted a space that's close to nature. To step outside and feel the gentle breeze, see the trees swaying, and hear the soothing sounds of nature - that's the kind of experience the client was aiming for - to make this place a true abode of calmness amidst the chaotic city life. Their thought was for us to craft a space that's not only a getaway from the city's hustle but also a way to connect with the beauty of the natural world and that is exactly what we delivered.

Pencil & Monk - Beach House at Uthandi

What inspired the design of the project?

The house finds its home in a neighbourhood wrapped up in lots of plants and trees. The beautiful surroundings gave us some big ideas for how the house should look and feel. We thought, "Why not bring a little piece of this nature inside the house?" So, we put on our creative hats and started planning. We envisioned a house where you don't just see nature from the windows, but where nature is a part of every nook and cranny. We wanted to create a place where the outside and the inside blend together. The goal was to make anyone who enters the house feel a little bit closer to the natural world.

Pencil & Monk - Beach House at Uthandi

What was the toughest hurdle your team overcame during the project?

The toughest challenge we faced while designing was the fact that a lot of walls in the existing space had to be broken down. The layout didn’t work for us. We had to open up a lot of spaces. We had a lot of surprises during the whole process. We also had a lot of issues involving the labour force working on site. Material laying also proved to be very challenging.

Pencil & Monk - Beach House at Uthandi

What was your team’s highlight of the project?

Since the area of the site was vast, the team came up with a creative proposal for the outdoors - to utilise the terrain and existing landscape to create an outdoor bar. The bar is the major highlight of the property. The existing landscape was highlighted using creative lighting designs.

Pencil & Monk - Beach House at Uthandi

From conception to completion, Elementi Cucina’s Creative Director, Katie Lusty, was on board with this new build project working hard with the clients to create their dream home.

Elementi Cucina

The clients were a young family with uber cool taste who didn’t just want a standard boring kitchen, wardrobes and bathrooms, like many they had seen, but were looking for something completely different, a statement, a reflection of their personalities as a family, quirky, fun yet functional for their lifestyle, which in a day could involve messy breakfasts, hordes of kids running around, the space being used as a family gathering place and sophisticated evening adult soirees. The clients were totally open to ideas, the more individual the better, they put their trust in Katie and were a designers dream client...

Elementi Cucina

The kitchen space was very large, and the clients wanted it to look contemporary but with personality, cutting edge appliances were a must along with a stunning selection of materials. The space needed to wow but also work as a functional family kitchen, they love cooking and entertaining, and the appliances and extraction needed to be able to handle this, the kitchen had to be easy to maintain and navigate also. A focal point and copious worktop space for the family to congregate were a must!

Elementi Cucina

The kitchen ergonomics were considered first, followed by the finishes (no insipid colours allowed), a beautiful sultry, dark door gave the whole design depth and texture. The layout was key, so Katie designed a tall wall run encompassing in beautiful organic strips of wood, refrigeration appliances were hidden and a pantry/breakfast area behind secret doors in the strip wood was designed in (to hide the toaster and clutter if required) and finally tall units for ample storage. The sink run included a beautiful stone sink and a must have Quooker tap system. The oven appliances were strategically placed for cooking with set down space directly opposite.

Elementi Cucina
Elementi Cucina

The island really was the focal point and practically gave the clients a central beautiful working space, with acres of clear worktop run for cooking up a storm and plenty of large pull-out drawers for storage. Dekton worktops add to the depth of the room scheme, the stone encases the back, island worktop and sides giving a monolith effect. The kitchen is a truly unique and stunningly original installation, and our fantastic suppliers who supported us throughout the project, especially the team at Classico Marble who really did go above and beyond with the intricate stonework (caused a few sleepless nights for sure).

Elementi Cucina

Once the kitchen was designed, bang on budget the bathrooms and wardrobes came next, again working closely with the clients to create unique, individual, and stunning spaces. The Master En-Suite and dressing room showcase a calm, soft yet incredibly chic design, perfect for this fashion loving client and her husband. The children’s en-suites were designed to grow up with them, the girls bathroom features a stunning rose quartzesque tile and gold brassware whilst the boys bathroom is totally batcavesque whilst being stylish and classic.

This week’s instalment of the Project of the Week series features a rustic and urban residential design by 2023 SBID Awards Finalist, Arsight.

Designed by Artem Kropovinsky of Arsight, this interior project in Tribeca curates an intuitive and personalized living space that beautifully interweaves the rough charm of natural materials with high-end features. A testament to creative craftsmanship, the apartment is imbued with unique elements such as hand-troweled fluted plaster walls, a hand-carved kitchen island, and heavyweight linen curtains. The design, valuing authenticity and embracing imperfections, tells a compelling story of human touch and history. This innovative fusion of refined elegance and rustic appeal, underscored by a commitment to sustainability, offers a refreshing divergence from prevailing trends.

What was the client's brief?

The client's brief was wonderfully open-ended and truly allowed us to connect with our deepest design inclinations. They sought an interior space that drew inspiration from the heart of nature, a setting that would be not just a living space, but a narrative – a reflection of nature's unparalleled beauty. They envisioned a space that would harmoniously blend the raw beauty of the outdoors with the comfort of an urban dwelling.

What inspired the design of the project?

Our primary inspiration for this design was the enchanting allure of nature itself. This wasn't just confined to theoretical concepts; we actively ventured into the wilderness landscapes of Connecticut. Here, we were particularly moved by the timeless beauty of driftwood and stones that had been molded by nature over millennia. These elements, in their most authentic form, became vital components in our design, serving as a tangible bridge between the natural world and the constructed urban environment.

What was the toughest hurdle your team overcame during the project?

The most challenging aspect of this project was ensuring that the raw, natural elements we introduced, such as driftwood and stones, seamlessly integrated with the modern features of the apartment. This meant balancing the ruggedness of these elements with the refined aspects of modern design without losing the authenticity of either. It was essential that the space felt both luxurious and raw, opulent yet genuinely connected to the natural world.

What was your team’s highlight of the project?

One of the most rewarding moments was seeing the hand-chiselled kitchen island, an epitome of our design philosophy, come to life. Witnessing raw stone transform into an exquisite functional and artistic centrepiece was a validation of our vision. This island epitomized the harmony between rough and refined, and watching it anchor the space was truly a joy.

This week’s instalment of the Project of the Week series features a nature-inspired, family home design by 2023 SBID Awards Finalist, Pia Design.

Pia Design was commissioned for the sensitive refresh and redecoration of this dated but loved Georgian country family house. The clients wanted to keep as many of their existing furniture pieces as possible, opting to reupholster much loved heirloom items rather than buying new. Inspired by the stunning hilltop views of the North Downs surrounding the house, the concept was directly inspired by the natural surroundings and referenced the panoramic views of nature and invited the landscape in.

What was the client's brief?

This project was an exemplary case study for us in sustainable design. Our client had collected good quality furniture pieces of the years, some of which were handed down throughout the generations and had a lot of personal meaning to the homeowners. They wanted to keep as much of their existing furniture as possible, whilst being conscious that they want to modernise the look of their home. We successfully reused every single item of furniture, only filling in gaps with new pieces where necessary. Their existing furniture was lovingly restored and reupholstered and the new pieces carefully selected or made bespoke to fit in cohesively with the existing.

What inspired the design of the project?

The entire design of the house from concept to design development was inspired by nature. Firstly, we considered the panoramic views of the South Downs visible from this hilltop house and how the colours would change throughout the seasons - this was reflected in the colours schemes, patterns and textures we selected for the house - from nature murals to a soft, seasonal palette of blues and greens, always offset with pops of warming accent colours. Secondly, the materials we chose were primarily natural, sustainable materials, such as Carrara marble, wooden flooring, and fabrics which were at least 75% natural fibres.

What was the toughest hurdle your team overcame during the project?

I would say that working with the client’s existing furniture and focusing so rigorously on not sending anything to landfill unnecessarily did come with its own challenges - we spent a long time playing around with what furniture could be reused in what room and how to refurbish existing pieces - often reupholstering can be more expensive than buying new furniture, so we had to consider carefully how to sensitively and cost effectively breathe new life into existing furniture that didn’t always feel like the best fit for some design schemes. For example, the client’s existing main bedroom bed was a very heavy, ornate wooden sleigh bed which felt overwhelming against the soft blue colour palette we recommended. We overcame this by opting for a custom, handpainted mural by De Gournay behind the bed, as well as large, bright coloured cushions, to draw the eye to these details as opposed to the heavy bed.

What was your team’s highlight of the project?

The highlight was undoubtedly when the client saw her home finished for the first time after the re-upholstered furniture arrived back from the workshop. When she reacted to her grandmother’s chaise longue brought back to life, I don’t think there was a dry eye in the room. It was very emotional and hugely satisfying to see the hard work we had put into the project be so appreciated and to see just how personal and meaningful everything in their home was to them, and to hear their feedback on how well they felt we had interpreted their brief and understood just how important retaining these heirloom pieces was to them. Of course seeing our project featured in Homes & Gardens was also a moment of great pride!

Why did you enter the SBID Awards?

Sustainability is at the heart and soul of everything Pia Design does, and this project has been such a perfect showcase of our commitment to our ethos and a testament to the fact that it is possible to design around what the client already owns without compromising the design aesthetic significantly. I think it would be a great achievement and even further testament to this if the project was deemed award-worthy.

What has being an Award Finalist meant to you and your business?

Having been an SBID member for a few years now, to have been selected as a finalist, particularly with our sustainable project, has been a huge honour. We are still a young and growing business as well, so to be a finalist has given our team an enormous boost of confidence. I’m sure our clients will be excited to hear about our nomination as well!
