Cosentino introduces Le Chic new collection, an advanced design proposal that recovers the beauty of veined patterns to show all the elegance and sophistication of Silestone®. Introducing six new designs, Silestone® Le Chic features patterns with expressive veins and metallic accents that stand out against neutral backdrops like cream or deep blues and blacks, obtaining designs full of depth.

Cosentino Group, global leader in the production and distribution of innovative and sustainable surfaces for architecture and design presents Le Chic, the latest release from Silestone® by Cosentino.

Cosentino - Eclectic Pearl

“Elegance,” said of a work is something that is distinguished by a minimalist simplicity that does not impede precision and excellence. For its part, it’s said that something is “refined” when it’s perfected, and it becomes finer and purer. Both definitions are embodied in Le Chic, from Silestone® by Cosentino. After conquering urban spaces with modern aesthetics with Urban Crush series, Le Chic shows all the elegance and sophistication of Silestone®.

Cosentino - Versailles Ivory

This new Silestone® series redefines a timeless classic. A step forward in veined-patterned surfacing with six design proposals that offers the charm of Victorian and Parisian spaces, speaking to nostalgia with a modern yet timeless execution. Le Chic collection is an elegant and sophisticated offering at the intersection of fashion and design. The patterns feature expressive veins and metallic accents that stand out against neutral backdrops like cream or deep blues and blacks, obtaining designs full of depth.

Cosentino - Victorian Silver

The refinement flourishes from the ground of innovation and sustainability. Le Chic represents advancement in Cosentino’s surface manufacturing, as the detailed veining requires an all-new system of design. The intricate, interlocking veins are made possible by the brand’s new molding system, giving life to particles and minerals of a wide range of sizes and creating an incredible new texture.

Cosentino - Bohemian Flame

The real sustainability of this collection comes from Cosentino’s patented HybriQ+® technology. Silestone® Le Chic is manufactured using 99% reused water and 100% renewable energy, and incorporating a minimum of 20% recycled raw materials in its composition, that also has less than 40% of silica.

Cosentino - Romantic Ash

Le Chic collection is composed of six designs: Parisien Blue, Eclectic Pearl, Versailles Ivory, Victorian Silver, Bohemian Flame and Romantic Ash.

Cosentino - Parisien Blue

Parisien Blue
Pure nostalgia for the French capital. Boasts a deep bluish tone with strong personality and powerful character. Inspired by the shades seen in famous Imperial Roman stones, combined with fine veins in ochre tones.

Cosentino - Eclectic Pearl

Eclectic Pearl
One of the best examples of Le Chic essence. Classic and modern perfect fusion. Flowing streams of delicate tones incrusted with grains like diamonds on jewelry. Eclectic Pearl hypnotizes with delicate veining, texture, and metallic accents across the whole surface.

Cosentino - Versailles Ivory

Versailles Ivory
The warmest tone of the collection. Very subtle two-toned marbling in the background with gradient effects mesmerize with the flickering lights of its golden sparkle. Versailles Ivory exudes luxury and elegance, reminiscent of the exuberance of the Palace of Versailles.

Cosentino - Victorian Silver

Victorian Silver
Soft and subtle two-toned marbling in the background, with gradient effects and great depth. The cool background tone blends with its silver and dark grey veins to create an elegant colour that fits seamlessly with warm and cold tones.

Cosentino - Bohemian Flame

Bohemian Flame
This colour presents subtle sinuous veins with metallic inlays in copper shades. The movement of the golden flows of lava that generate scars on volcanic soil inspires it. It’s reminiscent of the calmly moving golden flame of candles accentuating tiny metallic pieces.

Cosentino - Romantic Ash

Romantic Ash
Another example of Le Chic's visual excellence. Large rivers and incrustations of grains in various sizes awaken memories of a milky way visible on a clear starry sky. The accent of blue strengthens the depth of Romantic Ash.

Scribble Stone is a highly skilled team specialising in architectural masonry, producing the highest level of detail and craftmanship when it comes to creating the most unique architectural installations using innovative techniques and materials. With over 50 years of experience in solid surfaces and design, the experts tell us more about how Scribble Stone Inspire Surfaces create inspirational domestic and public realm schemes.

Scribble Stone Inspire Surfaces - Picasso Project

Production
Inspire Surface is our new in-house production that allows us to specialise in bespoke solid surface projects. Collaborating with artists, designers, and architects we help create art installations, exhibitions, interiors and public spaces. Inspire starts with an idea and develops this into a concept and design which can be manufactured and installed with the highest quality in almost every environment.

Scribble Stone Inspire Surfaces - Picasso Project

Sustainability
Porcelain is considered one of the most durable materials on the market, Porcelain manufacturers are prioritising the environment more than ever before due to government regulations. The main ingredients in porcelain are clay, common rocks like feldspar or quartz, and water. Porcelain will last at least as long as the structure of the building – It’s almost totally inert and does not produce any fumes or toxins even in the event of a fire.

Its versatility for both interior and exterior projects has ensured this material has remained the front-runner within the industry for artists, interior designers and architects.

Scribble Stone Inspire Surfaces - Picasso Project
Scribble Stone Inspire Surfaces - Picasso Project

Products/Materials
Working with a variety of large-format sintered stone slabs supplied by X-tone Surfaces, we created our take on these classic Picasso paintings. As many as 8 different colours of 6mm and 12mm slabs were used in each portrait as well as 3mm brass sheet.

Processes/Design
Our range of product knowledge has given us the ability to manipulate raw materials into unique art projects using state-of-the-art machinery. Using our in-house water-jet machine, we cut out each line and shape from 6mm thick slabs to match the original paint colour as closely as we could with as much movement as possible and inlaid the complex shapes into the “canvas” Taj Mahal porcelain to create the classic portraits. The large ornate frames were cut and shaped on the water-jet machinery from 13 mm thick Liem Dark slab to border and spotlight the artwork, to give them the classic art gallery look and feel. The gallery space was created by cladding a timber frame in large format 6mm thick Glem White porcelain slabs in which we could display our take on the iconic paintings.

Scribble Stone Inspire Surfaces - Picasso Project

With the success and positive feedback we got from these pieces, we hope to push them further. Our target market would be a range of different creatives, commercial and residential spaces and even art collectors. As you can see here, we have a range of different environments in which we would hope to see these pieces displayed.

Dulux has announced its Colour of the Year for 2024, Sweet Embrace. In this article, Dawn Scott, Senior Colour Designer at Dulux explains more about the research behind the colour, introduces its complementary colour palettes and explains how to use the shades across different sectors.

The story behind Sweet Embrace

For the last 21 years, Dulux has been using trend forecasting to identify a Colour of the Year that reflects the current state of the world and needs of building occupants. Every year, Dulux colour experts and international design professionals come together for a Trend Forecast brainstorm and share insights about where the world is heading.

This year’s discussions found that although we’re better informed than ever before, we’re still searching for peace of mind, clarity and moments of joy. In a world that feels fragile and complicated, people are seeking a space where they belong.

The Colour of the Year 2024, Sweet Embrace, is a reflection of this insight. Named by Dulux for its ‘arm around the shoulder’ quality, it can be used for projects across all sectors to create a sense of belonging for building occupants.

In addition to Sweet Embrace, interior designers can also draw inspiration from the three complementary colour palettes: Warm, Calm and Uplifting. Each palette can be used alongside Sweet Embrace to support the end use of a space and evoke emotion in building occupants.

Sweet Embrace - Dulux

Using the Dulux Colour of the Year across sectors

Sweet Embrace and its complementary colour palettes are incredibly versatile and can be used across any sector:

Education

The key to designing education settings is making students, staff and visitors feel welcomed and motivated. Whilst Sweet Embrace provides a neutral backdrop that is perfect for the main walls of a classroom, the more saturated tones in the Uplifting palette like High Summer can be used to draw pupils’ attention to the teaching wall.

These bolder tones and the soft pastels such as Fragrant Peony can also be used to bring joy to education spaces, without being too overstimulating. This is key for supporting neurodiversity and making the environment comfortable for everyone.

For areas such as libraries or time-out spaces, the Calm palette is recommended. The sage greens and sea blues, which provide that subtle link to nature, will help students to unwind and feel at ease.

Sweet Embrace - Dulux

Hospitals

Across the healthcare sector, designs are moving away from industrial, sterile aesthetics. To support the softer and more comforting designs that are now becoming the norm in hospital settings, the Calm palette is recommended. Its links to nature make the colours feel restorative and soothing, which is ideal for creating positive environments for staff, patients and visitors.

Care homes (and dementia care)

For care homes, one of the top priorities is ensuring designs aid wayfinding and help residents maintain their independence. To do this, it is recommended to use softer hues like Sweet Embrace on the main walls and more saturated tones from the Warm palette, like Peanut Butter or Winter Pumpkin, for doorways and feature walls to make these elements stand out.

Sweet Embrace - Dulux

Offices

To create spaces that improve focus and boost productivity – whilst also offsetting high-intensity and stress - use the Calm palette. These colours bring the outdoors in and help people to relax, improving wellbeing in the work area.

However, to boost people’s mood and provide an upbeat welcome to those entering the building we suggest the Uplifting palette’s brighter yellows like High Summer and Ochre Sands for lobbies and entrance ways.

Hospitality and leisure

Hotels and restaurants can really benefit from the tones in the Warm palette, as they can be used to create a home-from-home feeling and make people comfortable. On the contrary, to encourage playfulness in leisure spaces, use the Uplifting palette.

Sweet Embrace - Dulux

Social housing

For social housing, it is important to make residents feel at home as soon as they enter the building. The Warm palette is ideal for this, as the tones can create a sense of belonging and connectedness. The colours chosen for communal spaces are also incredibly important and should bring joy and imply friendliness - which can be achieved with the Uplifting palette.

Selecting the right paint for the sector

Sweet Embrace and the Colour Futures palettes can be selected across a wide range of Dulux Trade products. For education environments, we recommend highly durably paints like Dulux Trade Scuffshield Matt. This tough, water-based emulsion contains ultimate scuff resistant technology that is designed to protect walls against scuff marks being left behind from items such as shoes and bags, to help keep walls looking good for longer.

Sweet Embrace - Dulux

To further support hospital specifications, a tough, scrubbable anti-bacterial paint like Dulux Trade Sterishield is an ideal hygeine solution as it inhibits bacterial growth, preventing the spread of germs.

Finally, for busy hospitality, commercial and housing projects we suggest using durable paints that can be easily cleaned. For example, Dulux Trade Diamond Matt can withstand 10,000 scrubs (which is the equivalent of five hours non-stop scrubbing) so it can be repeatedly cleaned, ensuring that unwanted stains are easily removed without damaging the paint film on the wall – making the professional finish last even longer. This product also supports sustainability goals as it is 99.9% VOC free.

Dulux Trade Colour of the Year 2024, Sweet Embrace, and the palettes are available to specify from 12 September 2023. For additional guidance on the use of these colours refer to the Dulux Trade Colour of the Year 2024 Specifier Brochure here.

A coveted statement space and inner sanctum, the dressing room has become an essential element of any high-end interior.

It’s a place to pull together the perfect outfit, whether you’re heading to training, to drinks, or to the airport. Thoughtful design and premium materials mean you can keep suits, shirts and shoes in immaculate condition while securing valuables like watches, jewellery and cufflinks in custom-built safes.

But this most intimate of rooms is no longer restricted to sartorial pursuits, as a growing demand for his-and-hers dressing rooms indicates. This newly shared space is now being designed for comfort and pleasure as well as practicality – many dressing rooms incorporate seating, entertainment and even a dry bar or coffee machine. Add the latest tech-enhanced features like heated drawers and sub-zero drinks stations, and you’ll soon have yourself a space you’ll never want to leave.

Clive Christian Furniture

We caught up with Oliver Deadman, Head of Design at Clive Christian Furniture, to discuss designing your first dressing room and wardrobe, trends he’s seeing in the space and what can be expected from brand’s upcoming London Townhouse launch:

“It’s all about comfort in the dressing room: integrated seating, dry bars, entertainment systems, is also something we’re seeing of late. These spaces are being designed to spend time in, and they are evolving into entertaining spaces – much as we saw the kitchen evolve all those years ago.” - Oliver Deadman, Head of Design.

Let’s start at the beginning, what is the best wood type to use in wardrobe design?

Speaking historically, the best timber to use for clothes storage is cedar, particularly cedar of Lebanon, which has fantastic antifungal and pesticide qualities. This means you can safely store your winter cashmere without the threat of moths. We have recently produced a lined subterrain clothes store for a London client, which was lined in cedar of Lebanon. A particularly nice project, this was a prized gem for the gentleman owner who is a very proud Lebanese patriot. The raw material cannot legally be cut down, which makes it very precious – the tree must fall naturally.

Clive Christian Furniture

Design wise, what’s the first step?

Understand usage. As with all our client work, dressing spaces are extremely personal. How do you want to use it? Who do you want to be in the space with? At what times of day? All these factors hugely affect the flow and specification.

What are the trends you’re seeing now?

Collectors – whether sunglasses, hats, watches, shoes, or handbags –a huge number of our clients are collectors and we’re integrating more ways of displaying, protecting, and preserving their finds. Whether it be designing moveable shelves that can change and stagger in height depending on the size of an item or low-iron presentation glass. We are serially integrating custom-built safes.

Comfort in the dressing room: integrated seating, dry bars, entertainment systems, is also something we’re seeing of late. These spaces are being designed to spend time in, and they are evolving into entertaining spaces – much as we saw the kitchen evolve all those years ago.

Clive Christian Furniture

What new tech have you been integrating?

We have seen an influx in dedicated decorative security. A fine example of this is the Buben & Zörweg safe which is to feature in the new Clive Christian Furniture Townhouse, housing watch winders, jewel pads and currency drawers all behind the finest quilted leather and German steel. In LA we recently specified a safe product, which lives discreetly behind a push-to-open, mechanically operated full-length mirror. On a smaller scale we have a fast-drop integrated drawer safe, which allows clients to drop keys, daily jewellery, wallets, passports, etc. – operated by fingerprint recognition.

Appliances are becoming more present as spaces become more entertainment-led. We’re integrating beverage centres (Sub-Zero), Kaelo bottle systems within islands and even warming drawers used to preheat your linens and bathrobes.

Is there any advice you'd give someone around the internal cabinetry design?

As with most modern approaches to room layout, functional aspects are neatly hidden to preserve clean-cut decorative outer linework. Drawer separation, cable management for beauty appliances, pullout/up/down storage (for increased accessibility) – even dual-sided cabinets. Interior options are about balance, increasing functionality and workflow – without detracting from the desired aesthetic.

Clive Christian Furniture

There's a large dressing room going into the new London townhouse. Can you tell us a little about this? What specialist features have you included?

The room plays a trick on the eye – a large central opening appears to cast a reflection of the cabinetry from left to right. Each space (hers and his in this instance) features a fitted tall run of metro deco inlay furniture with a central dressing island. Hers is frosted maple, while his is black walnut to create a fantastic yin yang effect. Hers concentrates on decorative storage for shoes, bags and long flowing garments (through fluted glass), while his has a beautiful central feature of the Buben & Zörweg leather-appointed safe.

“Appliances are becoming more present as spaces become more entertainment-led. We’re integrating beverage centres (Sub-Zero), Kaelo bottle systems within islands and even warming drawers used to preheat your linens and bathrobes.” - Oliver Deadman, Head of Design

Do you find yourself designing any specialist design details in the dressing rooms – marquetry or other features?

The dressing room lends itself very well to personalisation. This is ever present in the fashion industry – we naturally adopt terminology like ‘tailored pieces’, ‘bespoke design’, ‘client monogram’ – we could quite easily be discussing a suit, when in reality it is about the space it is housed within. Why wouldn’t you want to adopt the same character and level of detail? A previous conversation I had when discussing a client brief likened the cabinetry in question to a Paul Smith suit: business on the outside, party on the inside! Cabinetry can be customised with bold leather, exotic veneers and glass work to pack a discreet statement.

What feature would you have in your own dressing room?

I think the integration of creature comforts within the space is fantastic, bringing the feel of a hotel stay to the everyday. A dry bar for the evenings, coffee facilities for the mornings, all set just off an adjoining wet room – with soft music and a comfy chair arrangement… blissful.

Verre églomisé artworks have also been referred to as “moving paintings,” thanks to a shimmering finish that gives the impression they’ve somehow come to life. But what is Verre églomisé, exactly? Here, we dive into the world of this incredibly intricate, centuries-old technique, from its origins to how it’s created – and, most importantly, how you can make use of it in your own space today.

So, first things first. What is Verre églomisé?

Verre églomisé artworks possess a unique characteristic distinct from traditional paintings; they appear to shift and transform when viewed from different angles. This captivating effect is achieved through the ancient technique of meticulously applying metal leaf, patterns, and colours by hand to the back surface of the glass. As a result, the artwork’s appearance changes depending on the observer’s perspective. You’ll occasionally find the term Verre églomisé listed under “foxed glass” or “distressed mirror glass” as well, though this is not strictly correct.

Detail of Verre Églomisé artwork, created by DKT Artworks for superyacht project

A brief look at the history of Verre églomisé

The technique of Verre églomisé has ancient origins, tracing back to the late antiquity period. Throughout history, it experienced rediscovery in various places, including 16th-century Italy, followed by Holland and Spain in subsequent centuries, and later in France, England, and the United States. Interestingly, it wasn’t until the 18th century that the technique received its current name, attributed to Jean-Baptise Glomy. An art-dealer and decorator, he is celebrated for reviving this time-honoured technique and bringing it into the modern era.

Work in progress on a Verre Églomisé artwork at DKT studio

The Verre églomisé technique

Similar to other gilding methods, Verre églomisé relies on the use of micron-thin gold, silver or other metal leaf to adorn a particular surface.

In contrast to oil, acrylic, or water-based gilding methods, Verre églomisé is a unique technique that focuses exclusively on glass. It involves the application of metal leaf to the rear side of the glass, rather than applying it to the face.

Combining gilding with painted designs, Verre églomisé requires artists to work in a reverse order to create designs or images, making it one of the most challenging techniques to master.

Application of gold leaf to the reverse of glass Verre Églomisé at DKT studio

With our own Verre églomisé creations, we take pride in offering an extensive selection of styles using a diverse range of materials, including both precious and non-precious metal leaf. Our artworks are further enhanced by employing specialised painting techniques, resulting in truly unique and unparalleled outcomes.

Work in progress at DKT studio on large detailed Verre Églomisé

During the creation of our Verre églomisé artworks, we employ the same gelatine adhesive used in the water-based technique. The adhesive is dissolved in water and then carefully “floated” over the glass surface, allowing for swift application of the gold while the surface remains moist. This process demands that our artists work with both great speed and skill to accomplish these precise and intricate works.

Work in progress by DKT artist on floral design Verre Églomisé

How can Verre églomisé elevate an interior space?

In today’s world, Verre églomisé offers a vast array of possibilities, ranging from intricate floral patterns to modern geometric designs, subtle decorative accents to large-scale surfaces. The versatility knows almost no bounds.
