1 - Concept: dimension beauty SCHÖNHUBER FRANCHI is proposing the Total Look at SIA GUEST. It is the original concept that sees the hotel as an experience that states its personality and brand, and with a new business unit for creating personalised spaces. 4 – The kitchen flies with the robot
Innovation of outstanding value comes from ALESSI. The Dressed line proposes white porcelain dishes with relief decoration and stainless steel cutlery, also with relief decorations. From KitchenAid (distributed by Alessi) comes an innovative robot with lifting mechanism complete with 6.9 l bowl, all in metal and highly versatile. (ALESSI, Pav. C3 Booth 041)
5 - The green room
The Daniele Menichini architectural firm is presenting the make-up of a real project in the development stage at SIA Guest. Every product and every technology in the "green room" meets all of the "eco" standards demanded by the low environmental impact ecological and energy qualification. It is increasingly the starting point from which hoteliers in Italy as well take off on the course of choices for interventions both on new buildings and renovation of existing buildings. 6 - Love in a room
The love room to you. Love Suite Love places the bed in the centre and raises it off the ground to make it the focus of an 85-metre suite, a private theatre for a journey somewhere between dream and sensuality through the exclusive circle of sustainable products. (HOTEL SPA DESIGN, Hall A5-C5 Booth 005).
7 - An electric… table!
Waysol is an innovative line of tables - among other products - that capture the light and turn it into electricity. The surface is a photovoltaic panel protected by a pane of glass, and its simple exposure to light lets it generate energy that can be used to supply a lamp, charge a smartphone or iPad, and even light the room. Solutions are also available for outdoors: during the day a table in the garden captures the light and is illuminated during the night. Other variants seem incredible: an open book with miniature panels in place of the pages set on the windowsill during the day becomes a battery to supply a floor lamp inside the house. 8 - Beautifully made carpeting
EGE, one of the most prestigious European carpet manufacturers, is presenting the EGE PHOTOGRAPHY collection of art carpeting decorated with black and white photographs by the Milanese artist Elia Festa, which EGE was able to reproduce on top quality carpeting. In this way the works of art become a textile floor. No longer just a designer for industrial design, but an artist for Industrial Art. An idea that leads us into a new era in which art repeats itself thanks to the industrial potentials of EGE. The result? A collection of art carpeting and rugs. Complete with certifications. 9 - Heating a hotel while protecting the environment
Heating a hotel with natural gas and renewable energy-powered ROBUR heat pump. Two goals in one: not pollute and save on costs. Indeed, the heat pump proposed prevents the emission of 4.2 tons of carbon dioxide and increases the value of the property by increasing its energy class. It also makes it possible to save up to 40% on heating costs compared to condensing boilers. Last but not least, it is modular and flexible. (ROBUR, Pav. C7 Booth 199)
10 - ‘Mediterraneo’, the wooden house that loves nature
A natural oak laminated wood and solid Ipé wood house finished with non-toxic and non-polluting paints. 'Mediterraneo" is a real Luxury house that includes a wellbeing area fitted out with Whirlpool Bath Spa and chromotherapy, made resistant by a steel load-bearing structure and innovative by a new-generation photovoltaic system. Low electricity consumption and domotic management make 'Mediterraneo" a house truly on the cutting edge. (SPRECH, Pav. A5 Booth 172)
11 - The bed that rocks even adults to sleep Its name is Sway and is one of the most relaxing new products presented at Sia Guest 2011. This bed, made by the company Klafs has the feature of slowly rocking its lucky guests, who can also enjoy absolutely relaxing atmospheres of lights and music. (KLAFS GMBH, Pav. A3 Booth 049)
12 - Mini pools, super wellbeing
Your guests deserve the wellbeing of the FabarPool mini pools. The well-known company ensures and reintroduces it while asking the hotelier, "Do you know what is the must that attracts more customers to your hotel and makes them come back? Wellness." FabarPool produces mini whirlpool baths, nothing less than mini spas with an innovative design that turn the hotel into an oasis of wellbeing at a low cost. (FABARPOOL, Pav. A3 Booth 056)
November has come and gone and with it the 61st remarkable edition of Italy’s internationally recognised hospitality exhibition, SIA Guest. Officially partnered with the Society of British Interior Design (SBID), the exhibition once again offered a hub for top-tier manufacturers, service providers and designers, both Italian and foreign, operating in the hospitality market.
SIA Guest, organized by Rimini Fiera S.P.A. at the Rimini Expo Centre fair ground in Italy, took place on 26-29 November 2011 and focused on business and excellence in innovation, attracting 600 exhibiting firms and more than 37,000 professional trade visitors from 30 different countries. A stand was provided for the Society in the TREND hall to promote its hard work towards better standards in the industry, and the benefits of membership for international manufacturers and designers. Fittingly, SIA Trend is a new hall in which a business area and cultural exhibition are combined, under the banner of experimentation for hotels and collective venues.
The Society took this opportunity to officially announce that it will be hosting the SBID International Design Awards wp-content/2012 at SIA Guest next year, with a focus on contract interior design. The competition will be open from December.
A hand-picked delegation of SBID’s top interior designers and architects was invited to attend the exhibition, meet the best international manufacturers on a one-to-one basis and participate in broader networking events, with a complementary 5-star hotel stay at i-Suite.
The British delegation was impressed by the unique mix of innovation and trends showcased: alongside the products of leading firms in the sectors of contract furnishings (china, glassware, silverware, table linens, bed linens), interdeco’ (fabrics, flooring, carpets and interior décor accessories), food service equipment, technology and illumination, safety, bathroom, wellness and fitness.
The 60,000m² of exhibit space offered a series of special displays, workshops, demos and conferences which completed the agenda. Exhibitors were given a chance to meet a qualified, select public thanks to b2b meetings and new formats that attracted buyers from major markets. The setting made for stimulating and fruitful encounters between supply and demand.

Below, they tell us about their latest project: Westbourne House, London
Designed to bring a touch of elegance to the heart of Westbourne Grove, Westbourne House’s contemporary interior is a sophisticated mix of Parisian boutique and Manhattan loft. Inside Out were recruited to renew their interior and exterior areas, and offer a touch of the interior luxury for the exterior space.
Inside Out supplied Westbourne House with Whisk Chairs, a contemporary classic; paired beautifully with Manhattan Circular Tables, quintessential choices and a recognised staple for exterior environments the world over.
The use of Whisk Chairs paired with Manhattan Circular Tables gives Westbourne House’s exteriors a contemporary and luxurious feel, whilst ensuring they can maximise on their use of space.
Furthermore, Inside Out provided Westbourne House with chic and sophisticated bespoke length Lobby 1 sofas and Bespoke Units to complement the boutique style interiors. The project was a success with furniture perfectly complementing the style and atmosphere desired at Westbourne House.
Whisk Chairs
The competitively priced Whisk Armchair from Inside Out is an inspiring alternative to the established classic. This stackable chair although only designed in the eighties is already regarded as a classic piece of design.
Originally a chair for the terraces of Spanish street cafes, the durable Whisk is completely weatherproof and suitable for a wide range of uses. Unusual for a mass-produced chair of this type, solid cast aluminium is used for the arms and seat in place of the cheaper and flimsier tubular alternatives. This leads to a reassuringly solid chair, which due to its ergonomic design is also very comfortable. The whisk chair is customisable and available in a wide range of colours.

The Lobby 1 Sofa is a Georgian inspired design, typified by its deep buttoning and curving arms. Further attention to detail is paid with legs finished with brass castors. Bespoke Units

Interior Designers have regularly been regarded as untrained in business acumen, often quite justifiably but often it is due to third party suppliers taking designers deposits and then going bankrupt, leaving the designer without the product and having spent the client’s money.
Edward Davey, the Minister for Employment Relations, has launched a consultation about bankruptcy and company winding up. The consultation document sets out detailed proposals to reform the application process for bankruptcy and compulsory winding up by replacing the current court route with a new administrative process.
Uncontested applications would be determined by an adjudicator and the court would be involved only at the application stage to the extent that there is a dispute that can be resolved only by judicial intervention. The minister proposes to allow electronic applications to be made to an adjudicator, who will be a person appointed for that purpose by the Secretary of State and whose office would be within the Insolvency Service.
Debtors who want to apply for bankruptcy for themselves would have the choice of submitting electronic or paper applications, and the option of making the requisite payment to enter the process by instalments. Where creditors are looking to instigate proceedings, a new mandatory pre-action process would incentivise debtors and creditors to communicate with each other and thereby reach a mutually satisfactory solution to the debt problem without recourse to a bankruptcy or winding up application.
This reflects the government desire that people are empowered to make the right decisions for themselves about their finances, as set out in the government response to the call for evidence about personal insolvency.
Litigation can be costly and time consuming. This new process should therefore deliver a more efficient service as well as saving valuable public and private resources. In order to ensure that the interests of both debtors and creditors are protected, the court would still have an important role and the route through the courts will of course remain as an independant solution of resolve. Not only would it decide the outcome of disputes, but certain petitions for the winding up of companies, such as those based on public interest grounds, would continue to be determined by the courts.
We intend actively to engage with interested parties throughout the consultation period, and welcome views on whether the proposals will deliver a workable and efficient application process for bankruptcy and most compulsory windings up.
An excellent example of paint being a more adaptable choice than wallpaper occurred when the owner of a Grade I listed Mayfair Mansion wanted a very elegant, expensive, handmade wallpaper applied in the 44 foot stairwell, which had sweeping vertiginous curves.
Applying wallpaper would have proved to be an impossible task, due to the curves and the irregular surface. In the skilled hands of SBID accredited Glaze artists a pattern was created, inspired by paper found in the Victoria and Albert archive. The result was simply stunning. All the motifs, each one a 22 stage process, fit the 2,500 feet perfectly with not a join in sight.
Glaze Specialist Decoration have recently completed a fabulous project at The Dorchester Hotel in Park Lane, London. Ten highly skilled specialist decorators worked throughout the summer to bring the historic Gold Room back to its 1930’s glory.
Glaze artists recreated a beautiful summer sky using a fresh palate; this involved soft clouds, birds, and vines twisting around the gilded moon gold fretwork. The ruched curtains are in fact a trick of the eye, all painstakingly hand painted by one of their talented team. To complete the effect the cornice and pillar mouldings were decorated using moon gold leaf after a faux Verde Borgogna Lastra marble effect had been painted onto the original surfaces. The interior designer Alex Kravetz said at the end of the project: ‘Amazing work – I am very happy indeed and I hope to be working with the Glaze team again soon’.
One service that Glaze Specialist Decoration offers is historic conservation. One of their artists was responsible for recreating Queen Victoria’s hand painted Chinese silk wall paper. Needless to say this was a very unique request and they are more likely to be working on projects such as the Mayfair Mansion and the Dorchester Hotel.
As well as completing grand projects such as the Mayfair Mansion, Glaze have also had some amusing and slightly unusual requests. Recently, an artist was commissioned to disguise a bicycle shed in a stylish Westbourne Park Villa - a beautiful bamboo tree with falling leaves now disguises the bike shed, which is hidden beneath a set of stairs, creating a unique yet functional piece of art. This just goes to show that with the right product specification, all kinds of problems can be solved.
Glaze Specialist Decoration offer a first class service to Interior Designers, for both traditional and contemporary finishes as well as polished plaster.
The Building Centre, whose Chairman Michael Rose is on the SBID Board of Directors, is launching a new series of talks to examine how a growing body of scientific research can inform interior design practice to promote human wellbeing.
Evidence Based Design (EBD), now well accepted in healthcare architecture, analyses how a well conceived physical environment can promote wellbeing. Designers both in the healthcare sector and beyond now have an opportunity to implement this research to provide long term benefits for their end users. By applying EBD to our schools, homes and places of work, designers have the chance to increase and sustain wellbeing for all.
Many design factors - colour and lighting, acoustics, air quality and furnishings can have a calculable impact on building occupants. Job satisfaction, increased productivity, higher occupancy/lower absenteeism can result from applying an increasing body of research in this field.
The Building Centre has teamed up with Grigoriou Interiors and Gardiner & Theobald to produce a series of morning seminars to examine the calculable benefits of intelligent interior design. The seminars aim to attract developers, architects, interior designers, owner/occupiers, landlords, specifiers, engineers, agents and environmental/sustainability consultants looking to add value to their designs by improving the wellbeing of occupants and increasing productivity and profitability for their clients.
The Feeling Good seminars will raise awareness of environmental wellbeing issues and effects to human health, employee productivity and social prosperity.
Speakers
Dr Bridget Juniper Bridget Juniper’s PhD examined the measurement of employee well-being. She is highly experienced in employee health and wellness matters and continues her award-winning research at Cranfield University where she is also a guest lecturer.
Professor Derek Clements-Croome Derek is an established academic on the design and operation of intelligent buildings. His research interests include intelligent buildings; design of workplaces; environmental design for human needs and environmental issues for the construction industry.
Dr Derrick Crump Derrick has over 30 years experience of research, consultancy and government policy work concerning environmental pollution. At Cranfeild University he leads a team of scientists concerned with the adverse impacts of pollution on human health and the environment.
Andrew Parkin Andrew established and leads Cundall's acoustic engineering specialism. He is well known and respected within the acoustics industry and is a regular conference speaker and technical author.
Elina Grigoriou – Chairing Elina Grigoriou is an Interior Designer and Sustainability Specialist with particular expertise in the commercial sector. Elina is a leading industry figure in interior design environmental change, who passionately believes that "fashionable" and "green" need not be mutually exclusive. Grigoriou Interiors is a RICS Ska Rating Development Partner and Elina Chairs the Technical Committee.
Richard Francis – Closing Statement Richard leads a global team of sustainability advisors at Gardiner & Theobald. He is a trusted strategic advisor who has helped blue chip companies and government leaders develop and implement cost-effective, performance-based solutions. For the last ten years he has focused on emerging sustainability issues in the construction and property sectors in an effort to advance the business and human case for better buildings.
Britain was represented at the European Council of Interior Architects (ECIA) by the official representative, The Society of British Interior Design (SBID), among sixteen other member countries at this year’s annual meeting. Each member country shares an interest to promote standards through a unilateral agreement on education requirements, competence skills and the EU code of conduct.
This year, the ECIA’s Annual General Meeting was held in Valencia on Saturday 24 September. Frazer McDonald Hay, Chair of SBID’s Education Panel, attended with SBID President Vanessa Brady, and gave a presentation about his activities and experiences after being appointed as representative for the ECIA Educational Recognition Program. Frazer will serve as the liaison between educational institutions and ECIA.
The French National Association had unfortunately reported bankruptcy and was represented in observer status only. An application was received by a French Federation and will be considered for membership in wp-content/2012. Malta has now met the ECIA standard and their application to become an ECIA member was approved; Malta will be represented and inducted into the European Council at Brussels in wp-content/2012 among all other member country organisations.
The annual general meeting was represented by the President of the leading organisations of each of the 16 member countries in Europe and was chaired by the ECIA President Joke van Hengstum. The outgoing Secretary General Gerrit Schilder said goodbye after his official six year term (constitutionally this is the time limit on holding a position). Germany proposed Elke Kaiser, member of the German national organisation BDIA, as the successor Secretary General and the vote was passed.
Next year the European Council will celebrate its twentieth year and the AGM will be held in Brussels where its headquarters are registered.
During the constitutional six year term of her post as Founding President of SBID, Vanessa Brady also put forward Britain as a hosting country for 2014 before her departure as President of SBID in 2015. In 2013 the AGM will be hosted in Amsterdam.
This year the continuing importance of London on the world design stage was very much brought to the fore at 100% Design, and SBID was pleased to partner in its promotion of innovation and quality showcased by so many of its members.
It was the first time SBID had exhibited (stand A50) at the show taking full opportunity to educate stakeholders (designers, architects, manufacturers, students and consumers) on what the organisation does: our plans for the future as well as our achievements over our first two years of existence.
We also displayed some of our members’ latest products; including a Villiers Console table, a Lasvit lamp, a DecoFlame Ellipse fireplace, flooring from KarndeanDesign Flooring from Van Gogh range, and a pair of Natuzzi Vani vases.
Over 500 visitors registered for membership information to join SBID at the four day event.
Our stand was also the venue for a breakfast talk on Saturday by The Times’s Style Editor, Dr Richard Dixon, to a group of American interiors bloggers (pictured below).
Vanessa Brady, SBID President, opened the seminar session on Thursday 22 September with a talk on ‘Design Law and Order,’ addressing issues such as designer fee rates, intellectual property and qualification criteria.
SBID also organised a networking event in conjunction with Prato Chamber of Commerce and the Italian Chamber of Commerce and Industry for the UK - over 170 guests attended the Made in Italy evening, supported by MP Mike Weatherley.
As the UK's first and leading contemporary design show, 100% Design outdid itself this time round and remains a hub of creative talent from the UK and around the world and a key event in the international design calendar. It brought together three inspiring exhibitions under one roof: world-class interiors show 100% Design, innovative surfaces at 100% Materials plus emerging talent showcase 100% Futures.
Our Education Panel Chairman, Frazer Macdonald Hay, recommends a few of his favourite books on Interior Design and Architecture - with one written by Ro Spankie, also on the SBID Education Panel!
"Drawing out the Interior by Ro Spankie from AVA's Series 'Basics Interior Design & Interior Architecture' is easily the best academic book of its kind, I haven't enjoyed or been inspired this much since reading Ed Hollis's book titled The Secret Lives of Buildings.
Ro Spankie's book is beautifully structured and written with the right balance between text and image to engage the reader visually and intellectually. The book will, in my view, be a big hit with students but strangely, I also feel, it should be an even bigger hit in the realm of professional practice.
I have lost count of the amount of colleagues which have voiced an insecurity and/or a frustration about drawing without CAD. It's this type of book which will inspire and rekindle a lost love for some, and for others it will inspire and energise their learning and practice.
I am very relieved to see Ro Spankie has written and researched this book with rigor and depth. I am so tired of seeing publications of so called authors, who just catalogue their past students' work. Although this is at times interesting, it's one dimensional and shallow, with little impact value to student's education in my opinion. Ro Spankie on the other hand has written a document with authenticity and integrity, which works on many levels.
The AVA series in general is well worth a look, I feel their range of Design Topics and their authors are excellent. I was fortunate enough to read yet another book from the same range earlier this year, by Graeme Brooker and Sally Stone, the book is titled Context and Environment and I immediately recommended it to my students..."
