Prepare for an Unexpected Rendez-Vous with MAISON&OBJET Paris!

Maison&Objet tradeshow image for SBID interior design events blog post

MAISON&OBJET Paris (M&O) opens its doors this month with a new layout, new areas, new purchasing experience and even more design inspiration! From 7th – 11th September 2018 design professionals from across the globe will be descending upon Paris to see the best in creative excellence and innovation. The new layout focuses on inspiring designers with two main hubs and 11 different sectors.

Since 1995, M&O has been the world’s foremost event for professionals of the lifestyle, interior, and design industries. Every edition brings together some 3,000 brands and more than 90,000 unique visitors – of which 50% hail from outside France. Promoting new contacts and emerging talents, M&O presents twice a year the latest sources of inspiration by shedding insight into current and future industry trends. As a result, the event has become an effective catalyst for brand development and business growth - and SBID are delighted to offer SBID members complimentary tickets!

Maison&Objet tradeshow map for SBID interior design events blog postFundamentally a multi-sector and cross-industry event, M&O provides a snapshot of the market twice a year in Paris. The broad, yet curated offering shown gives the fair a unique edge. This is why a pertinent structuring is strategic to attract brands and buyers, and keep them engaged. This year, M&O has taken on a new challenge: a complete overhaul of its structure. The new layout is the reflection of the organisers’ wish to go back to basics: Maison and Objet. Philippe Brocart, Managing Director of SAFI (the company that organises M&O) comments on this new approach:

"Since its inception, the fair has always seen two categories of visitors, each with very different expectations for their visits: retailers and specifiers. The definition of the new sectors was guided by practical criteria chosen to clarify the offering and make it more accessible for both visitor categories.

On the one hand, retail buyers appreciate the great variety of products on display, but need a clear divide by product typology and price range to save time. On the other, specifiers tend to look for specific solutions for their projects, with a more style-oriented approach. With this in mind, the structure of the offering was entirely revamped to provide greater efficiency, especially important as professionals have grown accustomed to having easy access to whatever information they need since the development of online tools."

Maison: new sections by style!

Interior design styles are just as diverse as fashion trends. The challenge for specifiers is scouting new ideas, finding new inspirations. For them, M&O have created a new Maison Hub, making precise and inspiring changes to achieve just the right balance. Four realms have been defined geographically and temporally: Unique & Eclectic, Today, Forever and Craft.

Objet: seven distinct families!

Highly regarded by French and international buyers – whether for novelty shops, concept stores, department stores, or online shops. Always in pursuit of accessories, ornaments and all sorts of decorative objects, these visitors organise their visit by product typology. The new Objet Hub has been expanded into include seven sectors: Cook&Share, Smart Gift, Fashion Accessories, Kids&Family, Home Accessories, Home Fragrance and Home Linen.

This week's instalment of the #SBIDinspire interior design series features a luxurious, 1920's style apartment in South Kensington. Creating a sophisticated interior for a young family within their historical Grade II listed, six bedroom home, Hill House Interiors lovingly restored key period features including classical cornicing, panelling and moulding, working on both the interior design and architecture to create the art deco inspired scheme. Located just a stone’s throw from the Royal Albert Hall, the palatial home enters onto an extensive hallway, with custom polished stone flooring inlayed with nero marquina black marble and bronze metal, above which sits a made to measure 2.7 metre bronze china leaf chandelier, suspended via a mirrored ceiling plate. With a focus on entertaining, a bespoke bar with detailed inlays creates a show stopping backdrop to the formal dining room, showcasing the grand proportions of the home.

Project: Albert Court Apartment

Project Location: London, UK

Hill House Interiors Albert Court Apartment interior design scheme for Project of the Week

What was the client's brief?

Within a historical Grade II listed building, the large duplex apartment is located just moments away from the Royal Albert Hall. Albert Court is a beautiful red brick, portered mansion block, well positioned for Hyde Park and the amenities in South Kensington, Knightsbridge and Kensington.

The extensive 5000 sq ft project was commissioned by a young couple with two children, who had been living in the home for a few years previously, and who were looking to carefully restore yet update their six bedroom home.

Brought on to complete both the interior architecture and design, Hill House Interiors were briefed to ensure a strong emphasis was placed on entertaining, creating a suitable space for both the couple and their children, with the drawing and dining rooms a key focus within the home.

What inspired the design of the project?

Unhappy with the former layout of the apartment, the clients worked closely with Hill House Interiors' highly skilled and creative architects to create a more harmonious flow, completely redesigning the internal layout by moving the staircase to the upper floor. The design scheme was based on the key period features of the historical Grade II listed building.

What was the toughest hurdle your team overcame during the project?

Retaining key features within the home was a challenge the Hill House designers and architects rose to, sympathetically restoring the classical cornicing, panelling and mouldings and intricate details throughout, to the strict guidelines associated with its listed status.

To restore the original panelling and ceiling detail of the home, many layers of paint had to be delicately removed. The beauty of the detailing was all but lost beneath the many redecorations of the historical home, and the Hill House design team worked meticulously to ensure no damage to the original fittings occurred.

What was your team’s highlight of the project?

Working within such a historical building, Hill House Interiors effectively chose to go down a complimentary design route, focusing on a classic and elegant art deco inspired scheme. The attention to detail is consistent, from the custom polished stone flooring inlayed with nero marquina black marble, to the bespoke 2.7 metre almond gold bone china dancing leaf chandelier, and perfectly reflects both the home’s history and the family currently residing within.

This week's instalment of the #SBIDinspire interior design series features the transformation of a Grade II listed terrace house which has been renovated and reconfigured into a sleek and contemporary Bachelor Pad in London. Receiving careful attention to detail, works were carried out to preserve and enhance the existing features which characterised the property. The original timber flooring was lovingly restored and the bespoke dark oak joinery, together with the panelling, was designed to be a sympathetic nod to the buildings historic stature. The tall ceilings allowed Prestige Architects to play around with light by incorporating large, statement chandeliers and experiment with a light, neutral colourway to inject an elegant, luxurious feeling into the new layout and create a great setting for the existing fireplaces.

What was the client's brief?

The client is was developer, hence the brief for the interior design was centred around efficiency to complete the project in time and on budget. This gave us a 3 month window to achieve the design vision with particular attention to the quality of the final product.

Prestige Architects London Bachelor Pad interior design scheme for Project of the Week on SBID blog

What inspired the design of the project?

The existing property is a Grade II listed building with original features such as windows, cornice, fireplaces and parts of the flooring. The inspiration had to start from these elements and the careful attention it took to bringing them back to life in harmony with the newer, more contemporary works.

Prestige Architects London Bachelor Pad interior design scheme for Project of the Week on SBID blog

What was the toughest hurdle your team overcame during the project?

The balance between delivery time and budget was a challenge, especially with the aim of delivering such a high quality end-product with this high spec interior design scheme, nevertheless we managed to have a great synergy with the client and delivered the project on time and within budget!

Prestige Architects London Bachelor Pad interior design scheme for Project of the Week on SBID blog

What was your team’s highlight of the project?

As always, for me the highlight of the project lies within the details of the deliverable. The visual connection between the elements characterise the scheme - like the oak bead around doors and the details on the joinery. These finer aspects of the interior create an important design connection.

Why did you enter the SBID International Design Awards?

As our buisness is primarily based on word-of-mouth and repeated clients, entering an International competition such as the SBID International Design Awards and being selected as a finalist reassures us that we are constantly improving our design ability. It also gives us exposure with colleagues and the public, which is always rewarding!

This week's instalment of the #SBIDinspire interior design series features a hotel brand with the heart of a boutique hotel and an appetite for adventure. Moxy Hotels, making a much-anticipated U.S. debut, opened the brand’s second stateside property, Moxy New Orleans. Favouring expansive public spaces in lieu of larger guest rooms, Stonehill Taylor emphasises an active, social, and autonomous experience - a hallmark of the Moxy brand - throughout the public space design. Moxy provides an affordable, engaging experience to millennial travellers without sacrificing style or innovation. The main focal point of the lobby area, the bar, is clad in reclaimed wood and topped with textured black stone. Positioned prominently between the library and lounge areas, the bar doubles as a gathering place for drinks and conversation, as well as check-in and reception area.

Stonehill Taylor Moxy New Orleans interior design Project of the Week for SBID blog

What was the client's brief?

Moxy New Orleans was only the second US property for Moxy Hotels. The goal was to capture New Orleans’ artistic spirit and bohemian legacy. While an affordable lodging experience targeting millennials, the design team did not want to sacrifice style or innovation. For this reason, Stonehill Taylor approached the project with ideas to infuse a youthful design with modern art, contemporary technology and distinct, local influences.

Stonehill Taylor Moxy New Orleans interior design Project of the Week for SBID blog

What inspired the design of the project?

Located right outside of the French Quarter, New Orleans truly acted as the primary inspiration for Moxy NOLA’s design. It’s industrial interior references the city’s history, with the first floor being stripped down to a raw, warehouse-like space revealed the existing concrete flooring, as well as the exposed pipe and duct work. The space is layered with a faded floor stencil influenced by Spanish tile, and light fixtures with street lamp-inspired metal detailing, adding French Quarter flair.

Stonehill Taylor Moxy New Orleans interior design Project of the Week for SBID blog

What was the toughest hurdle your team overcame during the project?

The toughest hurdle for our team was converting a previously inward-facing, dark lobby into an outward-facing, inviting and exciting bar for both hotel guests and locals alike.

Stonehill Taylor Moxy New Orleans interior design Project of the Week for SBID blog

What was your team’s highlight of the project?

Working with so many local, New Orleans artists, we commissioned Reid Morris to create a large, full-scale mural outside of the fitness centre. Additionally, we worked with artist Margot Couture to paint a different mural within an interior lightwell – a striking, abstract piece spanning ten stories. The mural is not only an exciting visual moment within the overall hotel, but adds particular value and interest to an otherwise challenging view from adjoining guest rooms. Using local artists really helps to breathe the youthful, artistic ethos of New Orleans throughout the interior design scheme in a unique and authentic way.

Stonehill Taylor Moxy New Orleans interior design Project of the Week for SBID blog

Why did you enter the SBID International Design Awards?

We were thrilled to work on one of Marriot Moxy’s debut US properties. It was a unique experience to collaborate with various local artists on such large-scale art works throughout and we wanted to celebrate its bold, modern and interactive design scheme. This hotel helped spur the trend towards micro-design in hospitality, and we were proud to be part of it.

Stonehill Taylor | SBID International Design Awards 2018

This week's instalment of the #SBIDinspire interior design series features the pristine, paradise destination and beautifully designed luxury resort on the picturesque Vommuli Island in the Maldives. An island destination recognised and designed by four ecological zones, the beach, the jungle, the coastal and the lagoon area. In order to satisfy the client’s brief and also to fulfill the aspiration to create something truly unique, the exterior and interior design establishes a strong eco-awareness, expressed through a modern and contemporary architecture and interior design. Balanced by design elements which act as a respectful nod to the tradition, local culture, and the values of St Regis. The whole resort is emotionally and intellectually experienced and enjoyed, but with a profound awareness of the complex relationships of the eco systems being inhabited. Through the experience of each space and place, and the stories it tells, we hope to inspire our guests to understand more about themselves and the precious world we live in.

Company: WOW Architects | Warner Wong Design

Project: St Regis Maldives Vommuli Island

Project Location: Maldives

What was the client's brief?

To build a leading resort in the Maldives that will be sensitive to environmental issues but yet be a luxury resort destination that will justify the development expense without sacrificing superior guest experience.

What inspired the design of the project?

The inspiration for the interior design stems from the natural pristine beauty and ecology of the atoll and the desire to create eco-awareness to conserve and protect as much as possible the existing island. We think that nature itself is the source for design and not simply the man made world.

What was the toughest hurdle your team overcame during the project?

The toughest hurdles are logistics and associated time and costs issues to build in the middle of the ocean. The longer the time, the higher the costs and the greater the environmental damage. We worked hard to holistically control these issues and yet build with quality and precision.

What was your team’s highlight of the project?

Without doubt the highlight of the project was the opportunity to come so close to the raw elements of nature and the local culture. We are so delighted that upon completion our guests have a similar encounter that makes Maldives as a destination a real eye opener.

Why did you enter the SBID International Design Awards?

We entered SBID awards to seek recognition and exposure to the international design world as an endorsement of the highest calibre.

WOWArchitects | SBID International Design Awards 2018

Throughout time, as society, industrial processes and the architectural landscape has evolved, the complexity in the design of interior environments has increased. The efficient use of space, user well-being and functional design has each contributed to the development of contemporary interior designer's practices. The industry has therefore demanded interior designers with more focused expertise. With skill-sets pertaining to the consideration of interior structures, materials, cabinetry, spatial planning, ergonomics, regulatory compliance, facilities management, lighting, as well as plumbing layout and fixtures within the built environment. Interior designers must therefore be conversant in a variety of disciplines across architecture and decoration; alongside being well versed in dealing with plumbers, electricians, contractors, architects, woodworkers, furniture manufacturers, city planners and government officials, to name a few.

Historically, interior design relied heavily on drawing skills, intuition and the costly process of trial and error. Time-consuming constructions of physical scale models, room ‘staging’ and painstakingly hand-drawn plans were all stages which increased time, effort and cost whilst decreasing efficiency and accuracy. Hand-in-hand with the developing scope and sophistication of interior design as a profession, technology has unsurprisingly furthered the evolution of the interior designer's role and design process. With the birth of augmented reality, 3D virtual landscapes, new styles, expectations and standards of interior design, designers need to stay abreast of advanced technologies to prepare for the prosperous and thriving future of this diverse industry. . .

This week's instalment of the #SBIDinspire interior design series features the proverbial bar for one of chef Vivek Singh’s latest additions to the Cinnamon brand family. Cinnamon Kitchen in Oxford is his first restaurant outside of London and offers all day dining in a stunning setting. The sister restaurant was designed by DesignLSM, the hospitality design specialists behind the award-winning Cinnamon Bazaar and most recent launch of Cinnamon Kitchen Battersea Power Station. The decor combines a contemporary and pared back aesthetic with subtle elements reflecting the intricacy and elegance of Indian architecture. The new establishment includes a large destination bar on the ground floor, an openplan kitchen, chef’s table and a semi-private ‘Pagoda’ room. The 4,000 square foot restaurant serves modern-Indian cuisine with British influences. A focal feature is the impressive bar made from Caesarstone’s cutting-edge quartz surfaces; 5143 White Attica. Framing the space is a vibrant array of green ‘beetle’ style seating, creating a social and inviting setting for patrons to enjoy pre & post dinner cocktails.

Carly Zaver, Senior Designer from DesignLSM says; “The technical qualities of Caesarstone’s quartz makes it an ideal fit for bars and hospitality design. Being extremely durable and stain resistant compared to natural marbles, Caesarstone quartz is a perfect solution for applications that demand a beautiful, high quality finish. As quartz is non-porous, it is well matched to food preparation and service areas. This was key for the restaurant’s kitchen pass, where hygiene is paramount.”

Project: Cinnamon Kitchen

Project Location: Oxford, United Kingdom

What was the client's brief?

Our brief was to bring Chef Vivek Singh’s popular Cinnamon Kitchen brand to the city of Oxford, creating a relaxed all-day Indian dining destination on the rooftop gardens of the new Westgate shopping centre. The restaurant offers a social and inviting setting complete with an exotic garden terrace, which allows diners to take in resplendent views of the City’s famous spires.

DesignLSM Cinnamon Kitchen interior design Project of the Week for SBID blog

What inspired the design of the Project?

Inspired by the intricacy and elegancy of Indian architecture, the interior design combines a contemporary and paired back aesthetic - featuring decorative whitewashed wall paneling, bespoke pendant lighting and luxurious marble finishes; harmonizing together to create a refined ambience that strongly reflects the ethos of the Cinnamon brand.

DesignLSM Cinnamon Kitchen interior design Project of the Week for SBID blog

What was the toughest hurdle your team overcame during the project?

Despite the site being in a prominent location, it was important that we created a point of difference to other restaurant offerings within the area. We achieved this by designing an enticing outdoor terrace conjuring the exotic essence of an Indian garden with exquisite arrays of rich and greenery and relaxed alfresco furniture.

DesignLSM Cinnamon Kitchen interior design Project of the Week for SBID blog

What was your team’s highlight of the project?

Working with Vivek and the amazing Cinnamon team is always a joy, we have loved helping them expand their portfolio with their first debut outside of London; along with the openings of Cinnamon Bazaaar and Cinnamon Kitchen Battersea. This project was a great challenge for us to create a refined and elegant dining environment. Cinnamon Kitchen Oxford offers a different feel to its sister restaurant whilst still in keeping with the true persona of the brand.

Customers can choose from three luxurious finishes - chrome, nickel and pewter, with four other special finishes available to order, including timeless on-trend satin brass and opulent 24 carat plated gold.

David Cole, sales director at Perrin & Rowe says, “Hoxton showcases Perrin & Rowe’s credentials in contemporary design and engineering.  It’s a graceful and elegant bathroom range, with soft curves rather than harsh angles which reflects light beautifully.  We believe it offers something new in bathrooms: a fresh take on modern luxury; designed, engineered and manufactured in the UK. We’re tremendously proud of it."

Nulty Bespoke project for interior design product update July 2018

Nulty Bespoke worked with developer and designer, Fenton Whelan, to design a tailor-made contemporary chandelier

Nulty Bespoke design bespoke handcrafted luminaires for exceptional spaces. The Flora Pendant is one of their latest bespoke designs, a tailor-made contemporary stairwell chandelier which would create a dramatic statement feature, while adding warmth to the reception room of the luxurious family home on Lonsdale Road in the heart of Notting Hill. Their role was to take the interior designer’s concept for the stairwell's statement installation and turn it into a reality.

Inspired by natural forms, a spiral of light from 24 petal-shaped shades now gently cascades through the three-storey stairwell. The floating, sculptural quality of the chandelier adds visual interest, complementing the muted backdrop of polished plaster walls, wrought iron balustrade and oak handrail, bringing a bold and beautiful dimension to the hallway for welcoming guests.

With their experience in luminaire design and in-depth understanding of manufacturing processes, Nulty Bespoke offer beautiful lighting solutions of the utmost quality.

What was the client's brief?

Gallery Clubhouse is designed to provide relaxation and entertainment for residents in a residential development in the upcoming district of Hong Kou, Shanghai. This development is one of the most prestigious developments in Shanghai with an overarching design concept of art and culture, so creating a luxurious, art gallery-esque type design scheme essential.

What inspired the design of the Project?

We looked no further than towards nature for our design inspiration for this project. Throughout the entire clubhouse you can find elements of flora inspiration; from the mosaic wall patterns on the changing room feature wall, the floral patterns and colours used in the lobby area rug to the bespoke, hand-blown crystal chandelier in the entrance lobby. Every piece of furniture, light fixture and custom rug is treated like a piece of art would be in a gallery; all drawing design inspiration from various flowers and natural forms.

What was your team’s highlight of the project?

The ground floor lounge complete with 250 pieces of hand crafted crystal leaves that shimmer from the ceiling is one of our proudest achievements. The aim was to mimic the style of a luxurious hotel lobby, with groups of comfortable seating and a coffee bar. The stunning ceiling details light up with different colours and each crystal twinkles to exude the essence of luxury we wanted to capture.
