Membership Categories


Active Professional from £295 + VAT p.a.

The European Council of Interior Architects (ECIA) requires 4 years of undergraduate education in interior design or interior architecture and 2 years work experience.

In the UK this translates to 3 years of undergraduate education in accordance with the ECIA charter of education plus 3.5 years of professional practice in an interior designer's or architect's office, verified by employers validation or portfolio;

or

If you do not have a degree in interior design or architecture it is possible to become a full member of SBID up to Dec 31st 2011 via exemption. This opportunity is provided in accordance with the charter for education of the ECIA. It is available to applicants who can demonstrate that their education and experience satisfy ECIA criteria. Inactive Professional from £195 + VAT p.a.

An inactive Professional or Academic Member who is currently abeyant.

Associate Member from £195 + VAT p.a.

An Associate Member is someone who wants to be a designer or architect but does not have the required degree and/or experience, which is a total of about 6 years. (For instance: if you did a 3 year degree, you must have 3.5 years experience on top of that; if you did 4 years, you must have 2 years experience; if you did a diploma, you need 6 years experience on top of that to become a Design Professional. Students who have just graduated and are in work change to Associate membership until they have done 2/3 years experienceas a designer or at a design practice. )

Student Member free for Forums or £25 + VAT p.a.

Students currently studying for a degree in interior design or interior architecture at an SBID recognised university (browse our list here).

12 students or more joining at one time from a single university become a forum and qualify for the SBID bursary which provides exemption from membership fees. To apply for the SBID bursary please contact the secretariat on 020 7738 9383.

Group Practice from £2,500 + VAT p.a. for practices of under 26 employees

Membership provides named professionals with full SBID accreditation and benefits by enrolling as a group practice.

Professional Industry Partner from £495 p.a.

A Professional Industry Partner will be a supplier, manufacturer or provider of support services.

The accreditation `Professional Industry Partner of Society of British Interior Design’ is applicable to Professional Industry Partners.

Academic Member from £195 + VAT p.a.

Academic Member means a suitably qualified person as determined by SBID who holds a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) or who has been employed full time (or equivalent time-frame) in a teaching capacity within a SBID recognised higher education establishment for a minimum of three years or as otherwise determined by SBID.
